Field Assignment #2

1.E.) From my perspective the classroom is what I would probably consider a good set

up. The only thing I can possibly say to make the room better is to separate the desk a bit more,

this allows for better movement in case of an emergency. Within the classroom I would not

eliminate anything already there, nor would I add anything.

2. A-E.) The classroom is flexible with the activities done in the class. For example,

when a student is asked to turn to partner to check their answers, they already have the person

next to them. The classroom is set up so that the exit or the entrance is blocked, which is good in

case of evacuations. Students are easily seen in the classroom, and the fact that the teacher is

constantly walking around the class, the sides and in the back makes sure all students are doing

their work or paying attention. Supplies in the classroom are quick and easy to reach. They are

located on the first cabinet coming in the entrance side. So, when the teacher instructs at the door

what materials they need they can get them upon entrance. As for visibility I would say the back

students may have had a little trouble seeing the board, nonetheless they are able to see along

with the upfront students.

3.) What I believe the strengths of this classroom are that students are close enough

where they can help each other if needed. It is organized and allows for easy recognition of

which student is sitting where. Another advantage is that no student must turn their head to look

forward at the smartboard. Other words you know a student is not paying attention if you could

see the side or back of a student’s head. Weaknesses of the classroom arrangement is also the

fact that students are next to each other which allows socializing even if they are just whispering

to each other, it could still be disruptive. Another weakness I saw was that students were able to

duck down behind the person in front of them and just zone out. Perhaps if the desk were set up

in a zigzag it would be easier to see students more towards the back.

4a.) In the classroom there is a total of 31 students in her first class more males than

females, 34 in her second with equal males and females and 27 students in her third class with

more males than females as well and the fourth class was the biggest with 36 students with

almost half males and females.

4b.) In the four periods that I got the chance to observe it didn't seem like there were

too many students who were isolates everyone seemed to talk with one another apart from

second period. The students of second period all seemed to be quiet and just waited for the

teacher to answer her own question, perhaps it was too early for them or maybe those who

wanted to speak up couldn't because the class had a really quiet environment and they didn't

want to stand out. But on one of the days that I observed there was one student who sat towards

the back and just ignore the teacher, seemed uninterested. The student did not have any materials

out and although was not disruptive the student was constantly laying down his head. In another

class there was one student who preferred to sit in the single aisle desk. However. the student did

answer questions and participated, although he was by himself, he did appear to be a bit more

ahead than some of the other students in that class period.

4c.) In all four classes the students who seemed to raise their hands more often were

the students who you could hear arguing why their answer was correct.

4d.) Since the school is an iPad school most students who sit towards the back are

playing games, while pretending to do work. Other students are just chatting with their peers

around them. And then the other one’s are not paying attention and are zoning out and laying

their head down.

4e.) I did not see too much praise among students, and I feel that it was what is right.

Every student that was called on whether right or wrong was given a positive remark, nothing to

belittle them for not knowing the answer. In other words, the praise towards students was fair.

4f.) Although it was a bit hard to tell which students were being ignored, they could

be noticed if you have experience or seen it. Throughout my observation I only saw one student

which seemed completely uninterested in what the teacher was saying, and I feel as if the teacher

just decide to give the same treatment and just ignore the student.

Summary: What I found about the students in the classroom is that they help each other

around them when they are stuck on a question. They like to talk in the beginning in the class,

but as soon as the class starts, they focus on the work and on what the teacher is teaching. The

students like to make small remarks to one another, some that can occasionally be heard are

arguments how their answer is the correct one and how they came to that conclusion. They seem

to have respect for one another and are respectful as I did not hear any name calling or insults to

one another. Most students are quiet but when they are called upon to answer a question there is

no hesitation to speak up so that the classroom can hear. In the classes the students want to learn,

there is little horseplay and questions are asked when something is not understood. If one was to

stay in the classroom or school, it would be easy to get along with each student as they seem to

know that the teacher guides them and is to be respected.
