1. General 5
MagiCAD for AutoCAD - User's Guide

1.1. Getting Started with MagiCAD

General
MagiCAD System Designer (MCSY) is an application that is a part of MagiCAD for AutoCAD. MCSY is an
application for the schematic drawings (system schematic drawings, Operation diagrams, etc.).
MCSY is very flexible and easy to localize to the company's needs.

Design Data
Company localizations can be defined to MagiCAD Design Data file. Design Data (*.msd) is a storage system for
MagiCAD definitions and settings (for example symbols, different kind of property settings, line types, dimension
texts, etc.). Information in design data is used in a schematic drawing. So, design data is a kind of template for
schematic drawing.

MagiCAD data can be used from many different Design data files, if needed. After the information have been
imported to the drawing, information is saved to drawing.

More information on the Design Data is given in the chapter Design Data.

1.2. Design Data

General
Design data information consists on two part - Drawing -and Dataset settings.

Dataset is the part where the company "standards" can be defined. And the Drawing part shows the settings
which are in use in active drawing.

1.2.1. Dataset
Selecting an active Dataset
Click the Design Data button and use the Select Dataset function from the dialog.

Select the Dataset file (*.msd). Some template datasets come with MagiCAD for AutCAD.

The dataset files can be found in:

Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MagiCAD\Templates

\MagiCAD System Designer
Windows Vista and 7 - C:\ProgramData\MagiCAD\Templates\MagiCAD System Designer

It means that the bigger the circle is the more MagiCAD found the objects from the pointed area. If the circle is
too big, it makes the drawing more difficult...

Property conflicts
MagiCAD always check the properties of the objects when connecting two object together. If there are
different properties in objects, the user have 2 possibilities
• Pick properties manually - user select which properties will be use.
• Resolve automatically - MagiCAD decide the properties which will be use. MagiCAD takes the
properties from the object where the other object is connected.

General
Property Text is little bit like a Text but it is meant to use for different purpose. It is a fast way to add a property
which is added for the object.
And the Property Text can be used for example between the schedule text.

In this example the FD text is a property text from the flow damper. And if the property is changed for flow
damper, it will of course be changed to property text.

Installing the text

Start the function from Property Text button and show the object which property need to be present.

Schedules.

Reports - it is possible to define which devices and properties will be shown. Read more.
Device Schedule - all the devices in a drawing will be shown. The properties can be selected in a dialog.

4.1. Create Symbol

General
With the Create Symbol function you can create your own 2D symbols. The user-defined symbols are saved in
the user symbol database.
The user-defined symbols appear in the symbol selection dialogs when USR is selected from the symbol series.

Create your own symbols with Create Symbol function

User Symbol file location

User symbols are saved to MAGISUUSR.MCS file. The path for the symbol file can be set in User Preferences.

Creating the user symbol

1. Draw a symbol which you want to use in MagiCAD.
2. Start the Create Symbol -function.
3. Select the lines which belongs to symbol
4. Select an insertion base point for the symbol
5. Show the connection points for the symbol

• There can be many connection points - also different connection points for the ducts, pipes and cables in
a same symbol
• Selected connection points are shown with circle (circle does not go to the symbol). Colors are different
depending on connetion point type:
• blue - ducts
• magenta - pipes
• green - data cable

Preview
Preview shows how the symbol will look like. Also the connection points are shown in preview.

Serie
Select the Serie for the symbol. Normally the USR series is good for user symbols.

Group
Select the group for the symbol.

Name
Define the name suffix for the symbol. The whole symbol name is shown in Symbol name field

Description
Define the name for the symbol. Description is shown in a symbol list where the symbol is selected. If the
description has not been defined the symbol name is shown.

Reset elevations to 0
Resets the different elevations that objects may have to zero.

Reset all objects to BYBLOCK

4.2. Create Similar

General
It is very quick to install a new object (which is in drawing) with exactly similar properties and settings.

This is done with Create Similar function or by selecting the device in a drawing and after that the
mark.

Create Similar function can be used for devices, ducts, pipes, cables and texts.

4.3. Set Properties

General
If there are same property value(s) for many objects in a drawing, the fastest way to add them is Set Properties

function .

Install the devices from the Devices -button or directly from the Tool Palette. Installing the objects from the tool
palette is the fastest way because all the devices, ducts, pipes and cables in active dataset are shown in tool
palette.

Tool Palette is a normal AutoCAD toolpalette and it has the similar functions in use (like transparency, auto-
hide...).

Creating the Tool Palette

Create MagiCAD tool palette from Tool Palette button .

MagiCAD create the tool palette according to the settings in active dataset. Use this button also after some
information have been changed to dataset (tool palete will be updated).

4.4. Tool Palette 73

Palette
MagiCAD creeate all the plattes (sheets) automatically according to settings in active dataset.
• Group in dataset will be a palette in tool palette
• all the sub-groups are separated in palette

Seelct the device, duct, pipe, cable from the tool palette and install/draw it. All the properties defined in dataset
