Professional Development Plan

Current State:
At this point in my professional career, I am currently in an emergecny hire teaching
postion at Maui High School. Simultaneously, I am seeking a permanent teacher certification
with Kaho’iwai Kalo teacher certification program. My intentions is to complete the program
and aquire my teacher license so that I may advance my professional career by achieving my
short and long term goals. I intend to be a fully certified mathematics teacher by July of 2020.
Short-Term Goals
The goals identified below are objectives I hope to accomplish (and continue to
accomplish) within one year (12-months) of completing Kaho’iwai Kalo teacher certification
program:
Goal 1
1) Improve my effectiveness in implementing Hawaiian cultural values within my
classroom:
Steps to be successful:
a) I will need to strengthen my knowledge of Hawaiian values by improving my
understanding of the Na Hopena A’o statements (Ha: Breath) and the Kauhale
principles.
b) By better understanding the statements and prinicles, I will be able to interject holistic
pieces of hawaiian values within my curriculum to target cultural needs and connect
Hawaiian culture to the modern classroom, specifically algebra.
c) Lastly, by collaborating, learning, and gathering insight from kupuna and other
professional teachers within the community, I will be able gain valuble knowledge to
infuse my lessons with aspects—language, oli, traditional practices (Hula, Makahiki
games, etc.) of hawaiian culture.
Goal 2
2) Increase my arsenal of instructional strategies to improve differentiation within the
classroom and meet the needs of my students.
Steps to be successful:
a) I will need to collaborate with seasoned teachers to better comprehend some of the
instructional strategies they have implemented and improved throughout their
experience.
b) To expand my instructional strategies, I will take up 2-3 professional development
courses that support building a repretoire of strategies relative to mathematics.
c) I will slowly implement new strategies that I gained from the professional
development courses and from my collaborations with other professionals.
Contingent on performance, I will modify and adjust the new instructional strategies
to better suit the needs of my students in algebra.
Goal 3
3) Enhance my ability as a teacher to reach and meet the needs of my English language
learners and improve their learning outcomes.
Steps to be successful:
a) I will build deeper relationships with my English learner students to better guage their
cultural background and target their english language needs.
b) I intend to take a professional development course that highlights ELL strategies and
how to implement them in my general education classroom to benefit ELL students.
c) I will collaborate with English language learning teachers on campus to borrow
techniques and methods to better approach my ELL students to support their english
language need.
d) I will build upon my training from Gemas Consulting – “Tools and Strategies to
Increase English Learner Comprehension and Active Engagement,” to increase the
participation of my ELL students.
Long-Term Goals
The goals identified below are objectives I hope to accomplish within the next 2 – 5 years
within my professional career as a teacher for the Department of Education.
Goal 1
1) I will register and complete an online Masters in Education Program in curriculum and
instruction at the university of Kansas.
Steps to be successful:
a) I will need to complete 30 credits of the masters program which consist of nine online
courses and a masters project.
b) I will collaborate with one of my collegues for his assistence, support, and feedback
since he is currently completing the program as well. Fortunately, I wont need to
complete a practicum or reidency for this program.
c) To complete the masters program, I will request the patience and support of my
family for the duration of the curriculum.
Goal 2
2) I hope to improve my involvement in the the community to provide an open and healthy
medium to holisticlly enhance the learning, growth, and communication between all the
memebers in the educational environment.
Steps to be successful:
a) For starters, I will build quality relationships with my collegues through means of
department meetings, data team meetings, school wide events and socials, and out-
of-work social gatherings to garnish a balanced relationship in and out of the
working enviroment.
b) I intend to continue coaching JV football at Maui High school to cultivate personal
relationships with my student-athletes to enhance trust and improve learner growth.
Also, enahnce my relationships with the parents of my student-athletes to increase
open lines of communication and develop a friendly reputation with them.
c) I will volunteer in the community with a program such as the Hawaii National Guard
Youth Challenge Academy to help mentor a previous student of mine. Additionally,
I will reach out to parents and gaurdians more frequently—email, infinite campus,
face-to-face, phone—to ensure that they are actively involved in their child’s
education and conjur up healthy communication between all parties for the benefit of
the my learners.
