The story starts as Don Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia family, oversees the wedding of
his daughter. The story then focuses on Michael, Vito's youngest son, who has just returned from war. He
doesn't want to follow in the family business, but unfortunately he becomes sucked into the centre of a
vicious gang war. The clash between the Don's fading old world values and the new ways makes this one
of the epic gangster movies of all time.
B Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
This is the tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over forty
years. Told mostly in flashbacks, the movie centres on a small-time gangster, “Noodles”, and his friends.
It tells the story of them growing up on New York's rough Lower East Side in the 1920s to the last years
of Prohibition in the early 1930s and finally to the late 1960s. The haunting music of Ennio Morricone
lends a backdrop to this unforgettable movie.
C Gangs of New York (2002)
The story starts with a violent death and then jumps fifteen years to the point where Amsterdam Vallon
returns to the Five Points district of Manhattan with one thought on his mind – to avenge the death of his
father. The backdrop to this Hamlet-like story of revenge is the crime-plagued streets of Manhattan in the
1860s. Brought to us by director Martin Scorsese, this movie has all the signs of a classic.
