Notice: This section of the guide will deploy Microsoft Windows on the laptop/Surface, as well as update the
Dell BIOS software. This process requires a stable internet connection and should take about 30 minutes to 2
hours to complete depending on internet connection speed.

Step One (1)

o Please begin by setting the Laptop/Surface somewhere that it can stay for an extended period.
Connect the power cable.

Step Two (2)

o Plug the bootable USB drive into any available USB port

Page 2
Step Three (3)
o Boot the laptop by pressing the power button, then tapping the “F12” button until the setup screen
appears. Once it has appeared, select the USB drive. This should appear as: “UEFI: Brand name of the
thumb drive”. In this example, the item is a SanDisk USB drive. If USB is not showing under UEFI
please contact Global Service Desk (contact details mentioned at bottom of Page 16).

o Boot the Surface device by Pressing the Volume (down key) and Power button until the Smart Deploy
screen appears.

Step Four (4)

o The program will take time to load, during this time it is normal to see the following screen:

Page 3
Step Five (5)

o Next a pop-up should appear for “Unattended Mode”, you can leave this alone.

Step Six (6)

o During the deployment this is mostly what will be seen on the screen. Feel free to leave this alone. It
is normal for this to take 30-40 minutes.
o If this window stays the same without any progress bars or if the download status does not
change after 10 minutes, restart the computer and start from Step 1 again.

Page 4
Notice: Toward the end of the process the machine may reboot multiple times as it applies updates to the Dell BIOS.
This is perfectly normal, please do not do anything to interrupt this and wait until you see a prompt to login
Windows setup screen as shown in the next section before taking any action.
