Integrated Media

Spring 2011 Interim R&D Mini-Project

For several of the schools at CalArts, the first two weeks of the Spring semester are
designated as an "Interim" or "Practicum" period. Interim is intended to be a semi-
autonomous curricular space that deviates from the core métier "track" and allows for
short-term classes. Each school uses this period in different ways. Some use it as an
opportunity to do needed skills and technique labs, others encourage students to explore
areas that are outside of their usual studies.

During the three-week Interim period next semester, first year Integrated Media students
will conduct a self-guided research project on an area of their choice. At the end of
Interim, the outcomes of the work will be presented in a group exhibition in A116 where
each artist will give a short talk about their project.

Students should define a research and development process that will be effective and
feasible for the allotted three week time period. Students are also encouraged to pursue
a mini-project that explores interesting new ideas or methods of creation that are
Integrated Media specific.

Research projects are optional for second year IM students. During this time, it is expect
that those students will be developing their final projects and/or meeting with IM
mentors.

On the final day of class this semester, students should post a brief statement on the
course blog outlining their mini-project. This statement should include the following:

Project/Area/Subject Matter - Describe what you are going to explore over the course
of the two weeks.

Process - Each student should define their own research and development process that
is relevant to their artistic process and subject matter. The word "research" often
denotes a scientific or scholarly strategy of inquiry, however in this context it also applies
to artistic approaches to investigation.

Outcomes - Students should define the outcome they will produce and exhibit in the
final week. Keep in mind that IM production support and equipment availability will be
minimal, and the space must be shared by everyone for the culminating exhibition.

Goals - The specific goals you have for your research and development project.
