Assignment # 1 – Single-phase ac circuits

1. Two single-phase heaters have nameplate readings of 2 kW and 1 kW, respectively, at 240 V,
60 Hz.
(a) Compute the resistance of each load. Compute the current drawn by each load. Compute
the power drawn by each load at 220 V. Explain the difference with the nameplate reading.
(b) Compute the total power drawn when the 2 loads are connected in parallel on the 220 V
supply. Compute the total current supplied by the feeder. Draw, for the total load, the
impedance diagram, the (V-I) phasor diagram, and the power diagram. Identify the
contribution of each load.
(c) Compute the feeder current and the power drawn when the loads are connected in series
on the 220 V supply. Compute the voltage across each load and power drawn by each
load. Draw the impedance, V-I phasor, and power diagrams. Identify the contribution of
each load.

2. A single-phase induction motor draws 6.5 kW at full load, at a power factor of 0.92 (lagging),
when connected to a 230 V, 60 Hz feeder.
(a) Compute the resistance, reactive impedance and inductance, and impedance of the load,
assuming a series R-L equivalent circuit. Draw the impedance diagram, indicating the
magnitudes and angle.
(b) Compute the current drawn by the motor. Draw the V-I phasor diagram showing voltages
and currents for each element, and the feeder voltage and current.
(c) Compute the reactive power consumed by the motor. Draw the power diagram, indicating
real, apparent and reactive powers.

3. A 230 V, 5 hp, 1800 rpm single-phase induction motor draws 27 A at full load. The efficiency is
77 %. It is connected to a 230 V feeder.
(a) Compute the power drawn from the supply. Compute the power factor. Compute the
reactive power consumed. Draw the power diagram. Draw the V-I phasor diagram.
(b) The power factor is increased to unity by installing a capacitor in parallel with the motor.
Compute the real and reactive power drawn from the feeder. Compute the reactive power
supplied by the capacitor. Draw the power diagram for the composite load. Draw the V-I
phasor diagram of the installation.
(c) The power factor is increased to 0.94 (lagging). Find the total real and reactive power. Draw
the V-I phasor diagram, showing the current in the motor and the capacitor. Draw the power
diagram. Compute the reactive power supplied by the capacitor. Compare with the result in
Question (b). Compute the capacitor reactance. Indicate the reduction in capacitor size
compared to Question (b).
