1) This team is lacking results-driven structure when members don’t have core norms
of conduct tasks and discussion. Second, they also lack standards of excellence
that members don’t have a clear and concreted expectation results that they should
perform their highest levels to meet. Third, the virtual team also has no external
support and recognition of the organization and the leader Jim.

2) In my opinion, Jim should intervene at this time. Therefore, Jim should take the
initiative and encourage team members to form an appropriate work structure and
standards to help everyone have a clear overview of the objective path and their
roles in collective work, also Jim needs to initiate other bonding and social
interaction activities that help experienced and new members communicate more to
improve team understanding and conflict resolution.

3) Jim specifically needs to focus on coaching interpersonal skills to work

effectively with members, and set up clear goals, and plan to complete the
achievements. And also it is necessary to find a solution to organize the
communication between them because when the number of the messages increases that
they waste their time and they will not read because of too much information.

1. Despite that the team has competent members from various sites, it have had no
improvement yet because of the lack of team coordination here we talk about the
standards of excellence where members’ performance should be regulated for
completed tasks. It needs also the Collaborative Climate which is the ability to
work together s we notice that each member report to Jim.

2. As the team is having difficulty getting off the ground Jim should intervene
with internal actions and targets Task that the members need goal focusing as we
have incompleted missions and also Structuring for Results.

3. Jim needs to be aware of team dynamics, managing relationships between team

members in this case members are autonomous and self-directed so he have to
influence the team and to maximize team effectiveness.

1. Which of the eight characteristics of team excellence are lacking in this team?
• Clear, elevating goals
• Results-driven structure
• Collaborative climate
• Standards of excellence
• External support and recognition
• Principled leadership

2. Based on this analysis of team effectiveness, should Jim intervene at this time,
or should he just keep monitoring the team? If you think he should take action, at
what level should he intervene (internal or external)? If internal, should his
action be task or relational?

I think Jim should intervene right now. He tried to monitor the team and it failed.
He should intervene both internal (firstly) and external (secondly). Task and
relationship intervention is critical to the success of his team.

3. What specific leadership functions should Jim implement to improve the team?
Why?
Jim should use the information search and structuring functions:
Jim’s internally should put a clear goal in place for the team because the team
members are very overwhelmed and ensure that each objective is end on time. Second,
Jim should define roles within the team and distribute tasks to form a coordinated
team effort. Third, create a weekly contact points to support the virtual team.
Finally, He needs to use feedback and evaluation to gather the views of team
members and get an overview of the team's situation.
Jim’s externally need to get more resources to increase working pressure for high
performance.
Leader should always implement a mixed strategy of internal and external
intervention to help the team focus on its goals.

1°)Among the eight characteristics that are lacking in this team despite that the
team has competent members we can say, the standards lack of excellence that
members performance must be regulated for completed tasks so it's the result of
lacking coordination's team , also members don't have core norms of conduct tasks
and discussion and they have no recognition of organisation and no external support
and they don't have the primordial concept of team which working together and each
member report to the leader JIM.
2°)Based on this analysis of this case team, i think that jim should intervene at
this time withinternal actions to improve the effectiveness of team , so the teal
should focus on a specific and a clear goal to achieve it together as we have
incompleted tasks and missions. and also JIM initiate other bonding and social
interaction activities that can able the followers to communicate more and to
improve the team effectiveness and to overcome the conflict resolution.
3°) As i mentione before, JIM should be find solution to organise her team and the
communication between all team members also he must encourage her team to set up on
clear goals and completing the achievement to maximize and improve team
effectiveness.

1) Referring to "Team leadership " and to the characteristics of team excellence,
we can clearly notice the lack of standards of excellence trough the lack of a work
strategy that allows the team members to be more efficient and to collaborate and
work together in order to accomplish their tasks.

2) based on the analysis of the team effectiveness, I think that Jim should
intervene at this time at an internal level at two sides: Relational, by supporting
the members and Task by reorganizing the work and setting necessary standards then
maintaining them.

3) To carry out the work, Jim must act on different levels, on the one hand, he
must strengthen its relationship with all members to ensure the connection between
them, then he must set the objectives to be reached, their deadlines as well as the
work strategy to be followed, on the other hand, he must eliminate actions with no
added value and focus the effort on the profitable actions in order to be more
efficient.

1-This team is lacking a result-driven structure, external support and recognition,
and principled leadership. With result-driven structure, teams need to find the
best structure for accomplishing their goals. When it comes to external support and
recognition the leader must identify which type of support is needed and intervene
as needed to secure this support. With principled leadership, effective team
leadership has been found to consistently relate to team effectiveness.
2- I do believe Jim should intervene at this time. He must intervene both
internally and externally. Relational intervention and task are both important to
the benefit of the team.
3- Jim’s intervention should be two-fold. First, Jim should focus internally by:
• Delegating and setting clear roles. The team is functioning as a group and it is
not working. Responsibilities should delegated and tasks split up to form a
coordinated team effort.
• Outlining best practices and standards of excellence. For example: if the email
does not directly affect another person of the team, do not CC them.
• Supporting the virtual team by setting up weekly touchpoints.
• Providing a collaborative, online work environment where team members can meet
and work together.
Externally, Jim must focus on the following:
• Advocate for his team to the larger company.
• Negotiate for more resources. If the team is overworked and unstaffed, it is
Jim’s responsibility to tell his boss that the team does not have adequate
resources to properly complete the project.

Jim needs to proceed with an internal intervention focusing on both task and

1) Between the eight characteristics of team excellence, those that are lacking:
-clear elevating goal and results driven structure; Team members are working on
several projects at once and have great difficulty finishing any of the projects.
-collaborative climate; One team member has 500 unread e-mail messages because each
team member sends copies of all messages to everyone on the team, the team members
have never worked together on any projects.
-principled leadership and external support and recognition; Jim is under great
pressure to prove that his team can work and provide a valuable function to the
organization.

2) based on the analysis of this team effectiveness, I think Jim should take action
at this time in both internal and external levels; first Jim should lead his team
to work on the same project, to achieve more goals together, second Jim needs to
express more recognition, encourage and support his team members, also Jim should
create more social interaction activities that will help his team to know,
recognize each other, and communicate more for better collaborating work and to
avoid any future conflicts.

3) I think Jim should use a more structuring leadership function; so the team will
know which goal to follow or which project to accomplish first for a better
organization, also specifying the tasks of each team, so the members won’t be
overwhelmed with work and deadlines, and have more meetings to evaluate the team
and have their feedback to resolve any problem faced during work.

1) The most clearly-missing characteristic of team excellence that is lacking in
this team is collaborative climate. It seems that they are working against each
other more than collaborating, and I believe this is because they are not used to
or have been directed to collaborate as much as necessary.

2) I think Jim needs to intervene at this point. The group is beginning to become
unproductive and there are early signs of conflict arising. If he steps in, he
needs to use Internal Relational actions.

3) Within Internal Relational actions, Jim specifically needs to focus on coaching

interpersonal skills, collaboration skills, and he needs to work towards satisfying

1)The team leadership model places leadership in the driver’s seat of team
effectiveness basically providing a mental road map to help the leader , to
diagnose team difficulties and problems to correct any problems discovered. In our
case Jim Towne is heading up a newly formed virtual team of 20 professionals who
live and work around the world. The team does not have a clear goal, a
collaborative climate or a principled leader.. The ability of the team to
collaborate is essential to its effectiveness yet no-one seems to have the time or
take time to focus on this. And lastly, Jim is not influencing the team to succeed.
2)To be an effective leader, one needs to respond with the action that is required
of the situation. Jim needs to intervene at this time and take action internally,
both task and relational, concentrating on:
• Goal focusing-clarifying, gaining agreement
• Structuring for results-planning, visioning, organizing, clarifying roles,
delegating
• Facilitating decision making-informing, controlling, coordinating, mediating,
synthesizing, focusing on issues
• Collaborating-including, involving team members
• Building commitment-being optimistic, innovating, envisioning, socializing,
rewarding, recognizing
3) I think that Jim should implement motivational and coordinating leadership
functions to help the team build strategies to adapt and to change. He can augment
the effectiveness of the team by keeping them focused on its goals, maintaining a
collaborative climate, setting priorities and gaining feedback from the team. And
also assessing the standards of team effectiveness via direct observation, surveys,

lacking in this team are :
a) results-driven structure, collaborative and copeerative climate
b) external support and recognition
c) principled leadership
2-Based on the analysis of the team effectiveness I think Jim needs to step up. I
think he needs to take internal action and figure out a way to get the team to
focus on this one project and get it done. There are too many things going on. I
think more people need to be brought in to assist. I think the action needs to be
task related.
So I believe that Jim should intervene at this time. He has tried monitoring the
team and it has failed. He should intervene both internally and externally . Both
task and relational intervention is critical to the success of his team
3-there are a lot of functions that Jim should implement to improve the team but I
think Jim needs firstly to set a goal, a structure for results, facilitate decision
making, train members, and maintain standards. Right now, Jim is just sitting back
and letting them figure it out.Consequently , Jim should focus internally by:
Setting a clear focus for the team. The team is overwhelmed and there is no
individual project plan in place to ensure that every goal is met on time.
Delegating and setting clear roles within the team. The team is functioning as a
group and it isn’t working. Responsibilities should be delegated and tasks split up
to form a coordinated team effort. Outlining best practices and standards of
excellence ffering more training on task completion and project management.
Supporting the virtual team by setting up weekly or bi-weekly touchpoints.
Providing a collaborative, online work environment where team members can ‘meet’
and work together. Evaluating the team’s effectiveness and providing feedback.

The team is lacking of results-driven structure (they don’t have a good

their individual contributions), clear elevating goal (they don’t have a specific

2-
Based on the analysis of team effectiveness, I think that Jim should intervene with
internal actions by structuring a cohesive team with specific and clear goals to
have effective results.

3-
To improve the team, Jim should set specific goals to encourage his followers to
achieve them, also, he should structure the team by forming a cohesive group, and

According to characteristics of team excellence, it seems that, even with high
competence of team members, the team is lacking results-driven structure, because
they don’t have a structure to achieve their goals. In addition, we can say that it

1) As we saw in the chapter "team leadership". The team excellence is characterized
by eight characteristics. In this case study, we can conclude that this team is
lacking:
-Collaborative Climate: because the team members have never worked togeter on any
projects. Also each team member sends copies of all messages to everyone on the
team.
-Standars of excellence: jim doesn't facilitate the process because he doesn't make
expectations clear and reviewing results, and providing feedback to resolve
performance issues.
2) For me Jim should take action at an internal level. So he must focus on the
relational side of his team by pushing them to work together on the same project,
and collaborate to start the task . This step will help the team to feel unloaded
and comfortable doing their job.
3) Jim should implement a collaborative, motivational and organized leadership to
improve the team. He should develop his team's communicative capabilities, and set
dates to track the works in progress and determine the effectiveness of the
project. I recommend for Jim also to make rewards to motivate his team in order not
to feel overload or under pressure .

2) Faced with this crisis, I think Jim must intervene immediately by playing the
right leadership role, which means finding a balance between the internal tasks and

3) Jim must focus on communication and interaction between subordinates while

to avoid stress and overload at them.

farther behind.”
• External support & recognition: “Jim is under great pressure to prove that this
team can work and provide a valuable function to the organization.”
• Principled leadership: “The team is a virtual team connected primarily via
videoconference, group decision-support software, e-mail, text, and telephone. The
team has met twice in a face-to-face setting to set goals and plan.”
2) I think Jim should intervene at this time. He needs to take internal action to
get the team focus, especially by doing both task and relational actions, in order
to push the team creating clear and concreated vision, structure, norms and
standard as well as improving the interaction among members.
3) Jim should focus on :
• Providing a collaborative, online work environment where team members can ‘meet’
and work together.
• Delegating and setting clear roles within the team. The team is functioning as a
group and it is not working. Responsibilities should be delegated and tasks split
up to form a coordinated team effort.
• Setting a clear focus for the team. The team is overwhelmed and there is no
individual project plan in place to ensure that every goal is met on time.

1- According to the characteristics of team excellence mentioned in Table 14.1, i
think that this team is lacking Results-driven structure as the work in the company
is not seperated into divided teams with each of them concentrating on a certain
kind of tasks. Also the company lacks Standars of Excellence as the tasks aren't
really well structured and determined.

2- In my opinion, Jim should take action right away, and it should be on the
internet level as the team is struggling to get going even with the potential they
have, and his action should be task to construct the standards of the team, by
making teams inside the company to seperate the work and increase effectiveness.
Moreover, the team is supposed to develop and implement techology, so in my opinion
the team should be together at all time. Also, Jim should focus on taking one
projects at a time so members can't be overloaded and they will able to finish them
quickly and more effectively.

3- From my perspective, i think he should follow these instructions:

- Set a goal for the company
- Set spacific tasks for certain members in the company
- Get the team to work together from the same location
- Structure the team into different departements
- Focus on finishing one project at a time
- Be by the team at all time
- Structuring the right standards to increase effectiveness of the members
- Having more meetings inside the company to evaluate the work and keep track of
the job done

1.In this case,Jim Towne is heading up a newly formed virtual team of 20
professionals who live and work around the world. The team does not have a clear
goal, a collaborative climate or a principled leader. The task (in the case) is “to
develop and implement technology innovations for all global business units” which
is vague in description and the team seems to be having an issue working out the
details of how to accomplish this. The ability of the team to collaborate is
essential to its effectiveness yet no-one seems to have the time or take the time
to focus on this. And lastly, Jim is not influencing the team to succeed. To be an
effective leader, one needs to respond with the action that is required of the
situation.
2.Jim needs to intervene at this time and take action internally, both task and
relational, concentrating on:
Goal focusing-clarifying, gaining agreement
Structuring for results-planning, visioning, organizing, clarifying roles,
delegating
Facilitating decision making-informing, controlling, coordinating, mediating,
synthesizing, focusing on issues
Collaborating-including, involving team members
3. Jim should implement motivational and coordinating leadership functions to help
the team build cohesiveness and strategies to adapt to change. He can enhance the
effectiveness of the team by keeping them focused on its goals, maintaining a
collaborative climate, setting priorities and gaining feedback from the team.
Continually assessing the standards of team effectiveness via direct observation,
surveys, feedback and performance indicators will Jim to determine whether past
actions and interventions had the desired results.

1. Among the eight characteristics of team excellence we find collaborative
climate, wich mean the ability to collaborate and work together, to build an
atmosphere that fasters collabration and integration of individual, but
unfortunately this is what the Jim's team is missing, because the team members have
never worked together on any projects. The members also suffer from the difficulty
of finishing any projects,so they need standards of excellence, team members
performance should be regulated so that actions can be coordinated and tasks or
projects completed. 2. I think Jim should intervene at internal level and focus on
relational actions such as collaborating, satisfying needs and coaching his team to
accomplish tasks and acheive objectives. 3. Jim must focus on collaboration and
integration of all individuals to acheive their goals, and finish tasks and
project, should also create space of communication between team members and help
them to avoid stress and pressure in order to work comfortably for satisfactory
performance

Q1/ the characteristics of team excellence lacking in this team are:
Clear, elevating goal : The team members are over laden and have a missing priority
and clarity of work
Collaborative climate: In effective teams, the team members assume the role of
leaders depending on the task in hand. The original leader just acts as a mentor.
That behavior is not observed here
Effective working procedures: The working procedures are not established..
Standards of excellence : performance not regulated so that actions can't be
coordinated and tasks can't be completed
also External support and recognition and Principled Leadership

Q2/
according to this analysis of the effectiveness of this team, Jim should act
internally, it is necessary to motivate the team and coordinate with all the
members and build with them an effective working procedures and very clear
objectives in order to Facilitating Decisions and to have good results.
Q3)
I think Jim should improve the efficiency of the team, so he should develop
communication with the group and he should also collaborate between members by
defining work procedures and objectives in order to had the desired performance.

Question 1:
There are some of the eight characteristics of team excellence which are lacking in
this team:
1. Results-Driven Structure: the team lacks the best and appropriate structure to
accomplish the common goals.
2. Unified Commitment: the team members lack the sense of unity, identification and
team spirit.
3. Collaborative Climate: they aren’t able to collaborate or work well together as
a virtual team.
4. Standards of Excellence: their actions have never been well coordinated and they
find difficulty to finish their projects.
5. External Support and Recognition: their organisation has never tried to develop
necessary team skills or support the team members to accomplish their assignments.
6. Principled Leadership: the leader or the central driver of the team called Jim
doesn’t play his role of influence, motivation and coordination between his team
members.

Question 2:
Based on the team effectiveness analysis, I suppose that Jim should intervene at
this time, at the internal level, to take remedial actions.
Both of task and relational are important for teamwork, but I believe that Jim
should focus a lot more on relational because if he succeeds in maintaining good
relationships between the members, they will be more efficient and productive at
their work, and able to accomplish their projects.

Question 3:
In my opinion, Jim should focus a lot more on implementing internal relational
leadership actions, to improve team relationships, by coaching team members in
interpersonal skills such as listening to one another, and by building commitment
and unity between them.
He should also try to organize more face-to-face meetings, because they are more
efficient than virtual meetings to set common goals and to coordinate between the
team members.
In addition, it’s better to focus with all the members on one project to finish it
at time before moving to another one.

1) We can with conviction that this primarily lacks the Results-Driven Structure,
they are extremely overloaded and work on several projects at once, moreover they
lack the basics of collaborative climate One team member has 500 unread e-mail
messages because each team member sends copies of all messages to everyone on the
team, the team members have never worked together on any projects
2) I believe that Jim should intervene at this moment with internal actions, the
team members should focus on the goal because of the common problem of incomplete
tasks, Jim should take initiative and encourage team members forming an appropriate
working structure and norms, he also needs to improve the collaboration and implant
a delegating mechanism, therefore he need to take action in both, tasks and
relational

3) Jim should use a more organizing and structuring leadership in order to improve
the productivity and performance of the group and solve communication problems, he
need to program more board meetings to evaluate the progression of the project and
solve any existing problems, and finally specify the tasks of each team and program
a delegating system in case of a overload

1- the characteristics of team excellence lacking in this team are:
- Results-driven structure: because They didn’t find the best structure for
accomplishing their goals and a structural feature that lead to effective teamwork
include task design, team composition, and core norms of conduct, which didn’t
allow them to compel the purpose of the team work.
- Unified commitment: because They didn’t develop a sense of unity or
identification, such team spirit that can be developed by involving members in all
aspects of the process, which didn’t allow them to work in a real time.
- Collaborative climate: They have a lack of the ability to collaborate or work
well together, so they can stay problem focused, listen to and understand one
another, feel free to take risks, and be willing to compensate for one another,
because They failed to build an atmosphere that fosters collaboration.
- External support and recognition: A supportive organizational context include
material resources, rewards for excellent performance, an educational system to
develop necessary team skills, and an information system to provide data needed to
accomplish the task, The leader must identify which type of support is needed and
intervene as needed to secure this support.
- Principled leadership: Leadership has been described as the central driver of
team effectiveness, influencing the team through four sets of processes: cognitive,
motivational, affective, and coordination, Cognitively, the leader helps the team
understand the problems confronting the team. Motivationally, the leader helps the
team become cohesive and capable by setting high performance standards and helping
the team to achieve them. Affectively, the leader helps the team handle stressful
circumstances by providing clear goals, assignments, and strategies. Coordinately,
the leader helps integrate the team’s activities by matching members’ skills to
roles, providing clear performance strategies, monitoring feedback, and adapting to
environmental changes.
2- Based on this analysis of team effectiveness, I think that Jim should intervene
at this time, he shouldn’t just keep monitoring the team, he should intervene on
the internal level on both: task and relational levels.
3. The specific leadership functions that Jim should implement to improve the team
are:
- Results-driven structure
- Unified commitment
- Collaborative climate
- External support and recognition
- Principled leadership
In order to improve the team’s effectiveness, performance and development.

1) Some aspects of team excellent are evidently absent in this team. They are: The
lack of a clear and elevating goal caused by the company handing out vague
instructions on the project at hand, as well a decent collaborative climate
stripped away by the geographical distances between team members and encumbrance of
emails. We can also add in the absence of a results-Driven Structure and standards
of excellence.
2) The situation is already dire, so Jim is required to intervene immediately in an
internal manner by quickly identifying the underlying problems with the team and
offer a clear directive for the team to follow
3) An obvious way to solve these issues would by having Jim defining clear goals
and tasks for the team to strive for and execute as well as reorganizing the
communication channels to ease the transfer of information between team members

1°)Among the eight characteristics that are lacking in this team despite that the

members performance must be regulated for completed tasks so it's the result of
lacking coordination's team , also members don't have core norms of conduct tasks

and they don't have the primordial concept of team which working together and each

1/ First, this virtual team is lacking results-driven structure when members don’t
have core norms of conduct tasks and discussion, the consequence is each member
sends copies of all message to everyone and some members get farther behind of
teamwork because of travelling. Second, they also lack standards of excellence that
members don’t have a clear and concreted expectation results that they should
perform their highest levels to meet. Third, the team is lacking principled
leadership when Jim just monitored the team via meeting and virtual methods while
there are no active supports from the leader to help the members deal with
problems.
2/ To improve the team effectiveness, Jim should intervene in both internal and
external affairs of the team. In internal affairs, Jim should initiative and
encourage team members forming an appropriate working structure and norms.
Moreover, because of the challenge from geographic distance, Jim needs to initiate
other bonding and social interacting activities. That means, Jim should do both
task and relational actions in internal intervention.
In external affairs, Jim needs to actively find the support and recognition of the
outsiders to the team. In addition, Jim needs to implement more principled
leadership with four sets of process: cognitive, motivational, affective and
coordination to help members solve problems, decrease stress and improve team’s
performance.
3/ To establish clear and concreted structure, norms and excellence standard, Jim
should use the information search and structuring functions: Leader use survey,
feedback, evaluation to gather member’s perspectives and achieve a comprehensive
overview of team situations before structuring those principles and structure.
Moreover, the team also needs task and maintenance functions to enhance internal
relations and increase working pressure for high performance.

Q1/
- Clear, elevating goals
- Results-driven structure
- Collaborative climate
- Standards of excellence
- Principled leadership

Q2/
An intervention is long due to happen since monitoring the team failed. Therefore
Jim needs to proceed with an internal intervention focusing on both task and
interpersonal development.

Q3/
Jim needs to set up a results-driven sturcture with clear objectives but also work
on interpersonal relationships both go hand in hand in improving work productivity
and stability.

The team are lacking the standards of excellence that members performance should be
reguleted in the aim of having a completed tasks we can say also that it needs the
results-driven structure because they don’t have a core norms of conduct .

2/
Jim should intervene with an internal actions both sides relational and Task by
supporting, motivating and also by coordinatibg and setting standards.

3/
Jim should set clear strategy, objectives and coordinate team efforts on the other
hand giving support in order to implement the mixed strategy the internel and
external.

1) The members of this virtual team have a common goal they are very competitive
and competent however they lack standards of excellence and a collaborative climate
and external support and recognition.

2) The team is having some issues getting of the ground so Jim should intervene at
this moment with internal actions in order to improve performance and to achieve
development so he should focus on improving the relations between his followers by
coaching and collaborating and improving communication and also the task actions by
reorganizing the work and setting standards .

3) Jim must improve productivity and performance of his groupe by solving some
communication problems and working on his relational actions he should also
reorganize tasks between the members by defining specific roles and tasks so he can
build and supportive and a collaborative environment .

1-Despite the fact that the members of this virtual team are competent and
qualified, they haven't been able to achieve their common goals and work
effectively, beacause they are lacking several characteristics of team excellence
such as results driven structure since they don't have core norms of conducting
results and discussions, they also need to work well together so that each member
of the team can stay problem focused and be willing to compensate for one another
2- based on the analysis of this case team I personally think that jim should take

task and relational development.
3- I suggest that jim should focus on goals by clarifying them, restructure plans,

and coordination are obtained, coach his team members and satisfy their needs in
order to improve their effectiveness.

3) Within Internal Relational actions, Jim specifically needs to focus on coaching
interpersonal skills, collaboration skills, and he needs to work towards satisfying
individual member needs.

Then, structuring for results is necessary in order to have a clear vision of the

Further, he should emphasise on communication and seek interaction between group

And
also assessing the standards of team effectiveness via direct observation, surveys,
feedback and performance indicators will Jim to determine whether past actions and
interventions had the desired results.

a) results-driven structure, collaborative and copeerative climate
b) external support and recognition
c) principled leadership

The team is lacking of results-driven structure (they don’t have a good
communication system), unified commitment (they don’t develop a sense of unity and
identification), collaborative climate (they failed to coordinate and synchronize
their individual contributions), clear elevating goal (they don’t have a specific
and clear goal).

2-
Based on the analysis of team effectiveness, I think that Jim should intervene with
internal actions by structuring a cohesive team with specific and clear goals to
have effective results.

3-
To improve the team, Jim should set specific goals to encourage his followers to
achieve them, also, he should structure the team by forming a cohesive group, and
finally he must facilitate a collaborative climate by making communication safe so
they can work well together and understand one another to contribute to the team's

According to characteristics of team excellence, it seems that, even with high
competence of team members, the team is lacking results-driven structure, because
they don’t have a structure to achieve their goals. In addition, we can say that it
is lacking standards of excellence, because they don’t coordinate with each-other,
so as result, we see, for example, 500 unread e-mail messages, and finally, they
don’t have a collaborative climate, and it’s a very important element, because it
help them work together, improve their performance and increase efficiency to
accomplish their goals.

2/
Based on the analysis of the team effectiveness, I think that Jim should intervene
at this time with internal actions, relational and task. First, the team need to
focus on a clear goal, so they can work on structured norms. Secondly, he must
encourage and motivate the team members to form an appropriate work structure and
improve their efficiency.

3/
Jim must improve productivity and performance of his team, so in my opinion, I
think that Jim should use more structuring leadership function, he has to set clear
goals, so the team can be more organized. In addition, Jim should create
collaborative climate, by setting a coordination and collective work that help to

1) The lack of collaboration in this team generates the loss of this excellence,
which proves that the constituents are not used to this kind of cooperation.
2) Faced with this crisis, I think Jim must intervene immediately by playing the
right leadership role, which means finding a balance between the internal tasks and
the relational needs of the team in order to reach the set objective.
3) Jim must focus on communication and interaction between subordinates while
prioritizing important objectives, all this to maintain a collaborative atmosphere
to avoid stress and overload at them.

Third, the virtual team also has no external
support and recognition of the organization and the leader – Jim, are under high
pressure to prove that this team can work and provide useful function to the
organization. Finally, the team is lacking principled leadership when Jim just
monitored the team via meeting and virtual methods while there are no active
supports from the leader to help the members deal with problems.

2/ To improve the team effectiveness, Jim should intervene in both internal and
external affairs of the team. First, in internal affairs, Jim should initiative and
encourage team members forming an appropriate working structure and norms to help
everyone have a clear overview of the path-goal and their roles in the collective
work. The team also needs to get consensus of a performance standard that could
motivate members to perform their best. Moreover, because of the challenge from
geographic distance, Jim needs to initiate other bonding and social interacting
activities that help experienced and new members communicate more to enhance team
mutual understanding and solving conflicts. That means, Jim should do both task and
relational actions in internal intervention to push the team creating clear and
concreated structure, norms and standard as well as improving the interaction among
members. Second, as a bridge between organization and team members, Jim needs to
actively find the support and recognition of the outsiders to the team. Finding
external backing also helps Jim decrease the pressure of proving the team’s
efficiency and its contribution to the organization. In addition, Jim needs to
implement more principled leadership with four sets of process: cognitive,
motivational, affective and coordination to help members solve problems, decrease
stress and improve team’s performance.

3/ First, to establish clear and concreted structure, norms and excellence

standard, Jim should use the information search and structuring functions:
Leader use survey, feedback, evaluation to gather member’s perspectives and achieve
a comprehensive overview of team situations before structuring those principles and
structure.
Second, the team also needs task and maintenance functions to enhance internal
relations and increase working pressure for high performance. Good relationships
among members could help them be able to work together effectively while
successfully accomplishing tasks help team maintain a positive climate and good
relations.
Finally, Jim also needs to implement a balance strategy of internal and external
intervention to help the team focus on its goals while seeking support and
recognition from outsiders.

1) The missing characteristics in Jim team are:
• Result-driven structure: “Each team member sends copies of all messages to
everyone on the team.”
• Collaborative climate: “Most team members travel to business sites at least 2
weeks each month. The travel is important, but it causes team members to get
farther behind.”

Q1/ the characteristics of team excellence lacking in this team are:
Clear, elevating goal : The team members are over laden and have a missing priority
and clarity of work
Collaborative climate: In effective teams, the team members assume the role of
leaders depending on the task in hand. The original leader just acts as a mentor.
That behavior is not observed here
Effective working procedures: The working procedures are not established..
Standards of excellence : performance not regulated so that actions can't be
coordinated and tasks can't be completed
also External support and recognition and Principled Leadership

Q2/
according to this analysis of the effectiveness of this team, Jim should act
internally, it is necessary to motivate the team and coordinate with all the

objectives in order to Facilitating Decisions and to have good results.

1) the charateristiques of team excellence that are lacking in this team are :
-results-driven structure: roles and responsabilities are not clear
-collaborative climate: the communication is not frequent and fluid
-principaled leadership.
2) I think Jim should intervene at this time at an internal level for the two
sides: Task by organizing the work and Relational by supporting the members.
3) jim should implement organizing leadership first to sychronize all his
ressources so that they can complete their tasks and projects, and then controlling
to make sure that work is being performed according to the overall plan.

According to the characteristics of team excellence mentioned in Table 14.1, I
think that :
This team is lacking Results-driven structure as the work in the company is not
separated into divided teams with each of them concentrating on a certain kind of
tasks.
The company lacks Standards of Excellence as the tasks aren't well structured and
determined.

2-
From my perspective, I think that Jim should intervene with internal actions by
structuring a cohesive team with specific and clear goals to have effective
results. Also, the team is supposed to develop and implement technology, so in my
view, the team should be together at all time. Also, Jim should concentrate on
taking one projects at a time so members can't be overloaded and they will able to
finish them quickly and more effectively.

3-
I think he needs to focus on finishing one project at a time, set specific tasks
for certain members of the company, Structure the team into different sections and
structuring the right standards to increase the effectiveness of the members, also
he should make more meetings inside the company to evaluate the work and keep track
of the job done and of course, being by the team at all time.

1) Based on Team Leadership the characteristics of team excellence lacking in this
team are:
-Result-driven structure
-Collaborative climate
-Principled leadership
2)Based on this analysis of team effectiveness, Jim should intervene at this time,
and I think he should take an internal action: Task by focus on goals ( clarifying
and getting agreement) ,and relationship by Collaborating
3) I think Jim should know overview of team situations before structuring
principles and structure. the team also needs task and maintenance functions to
enhance internal relations and increase working pressure for high performance, Jim
also needs to implement a balance strategy of internal intervention to help the
team focus on its goals, by coaching interpersonal skills, he needs to work towards
satisfying individual member needs.

1/In this case study, Jim Towne is heading up a newly formed virtual team of 20
professionals who live and work around the world. Despite the team members being
competent in their respective technical areas. They still lack some characteristics
of team excellence:
The team does not have a clear goal, the task is “to develop and implement
technology innovations for all global business units” which is vague in description
and the team seems to be having an issue working out the details of how to
accomplish this, mainly due to the lack of meetings that they did in regard of goal
sitting. Also, a collaborative climate that suggest that the ability of the team to
collaborate is essential to its effectiveness yet no-one seems to focus on this.
For example, the overload of unread messages because some team members don’t sort
the messages by importance. And lastly, principled leadership, Jim is not
influencing the team to succeed. He is under great pressure to prove that this team
can work and provide a valuable function to the organization but without any
recognizable effort from him.

2/ Based on this analysis of team effectiveness, Jim needs to intervene at this

time and take action internally, both task and relational, focusing on:
Building commitment within the team members in order to give their all to the team.
Also, Goal focusing-clarifying since the team has a lot of issues due to the vague
description of their goal and structuring for results including a better planning
and a great organizing. Lastly, facilitating decision making by informing,
controlling and coordinating.

3/ In my opinion, Jim should implement coordinating leadership to help the team

build a collaborative climate, setting priorities and gaining feedback from the
team.
Also, a motivational leadership that will help them to stay focus on their goal and
the ways to achieve it.

The characteristics of team excellence lacking in this team are :
- Results-driven structure
- Collaborative climate
- External support and recognition
- Principled leadership
- Clear, elevating goal
Q2/
Based on the analysis of the team effectiveness, I think that Jim should intervene
at this time. He should balance between the internal task and relational needs of
the team. On the one hand, he should set clear goals because the team is working on
several projects at once . On the other hand, since team members feel overloaded,
he should support ,motivate them, and help interaction and communication between
them.
Q3/Jim must focus on communication and interaction between subordinates while
prioritizing important objectives, and also should structure the work by planning
the tasks and specifying who is in charge of each task.

1-The most clearly-missing characteristics of team excellence that are lacking in
this team are:
-clear elevating goal and results driven structure; Team members are working on a
few projects at the same time and have some trouble wrapping up any of the
projects.
-collaborative climate; the team members have never worked together on any
projects.
-principled leadership and external support and recognition; Jim is under pressure
to demonstrate that his group can work and give a important added value to the
organization.
2-In my opinion Jim ought to take action at this time in both internal and external
levels; to begin with Jim should lead his group to work on the same project, to
realize more goals together, secondly Jim has to express more acknowledgment,
encourage and support his group individuals, moreover Jim ought to make more social
interaction exercises that will offer assistance to his group to know, recognize
each other, and communicate more for way better collaborating work and to maintain
a strategic distance from any future clashes.
3-To improve the team, Jim should set specific goals to encourage his followers to
achieve them, also, he need to program more board meetings to evaluate the
progression of the project and solve any existing problems,, and finally he must
facilitate a collaborative climate by making communication safe so they can work
well together and understand one another to contribute to the team's success.

1) In my opinion the characteristics of team excellence lacking in this team are: a
clear elevating goal because the team members are working on several projects at
once and have great difficulty finishing any of the projects. Another
characteristic missing is a collaborative climate because for example one team
member has 500 unread e-mail messages because each team member sends copies of all
messages to everyone on the team so we can see that the team members aren’t really
working with or helping each other at all.
2) Based on this analysis of team effectiveness, I believe that Jim should
intervene immediately with internal actions and with both task and relational
actions in order to improve collaboration between members and to set a structure
for results and a goal that everyone has to focus on achieving.
3) For me one of the main problem of this team is the lack of communication, so Jim
must focus on finding better ways to improve and have an efficient communication
between the team members this will definitely create more collaboration and a
better climate for everyone to work in.

1- Jim’s team lacks a lot when it comes to team effectiveness, a part from the fact
that the teams members are competent, they are too far behind to be a on a
collaborative climate, in fact even if they have mutual respect for each other,
they don’t stay problem focused because they are working on several projects.
Moreover they lack in standards of excellence , they didn’t setup previously
standards that they need to reach to perform well and as a consequence they have
difficulties finishing projects.
2- Jim needs to step forward as soon as possible before that the situation gets
worse, in this case, monitoring is not enough, Jim must be more involved internally
by focusing on task, structuring a unified team with clear and motivating goals to
have effective results is a must, because the team is already willing to
collaborate but they need to concentrate on a specific goal using a structured
strategy to be able to achieve goals.
3- In order to improve the team’s performance, Jim should set an organized and
collaborating environment through outlining the tasks of each member according to
theirs technical areas and to keep on track their progress to ensure that the work
is getting done while maintaining a cohesive team.
