8.1 Intro to Vectors
Scalar: A single real number that indicates the magnitude OR size of the
quantity.
Vector: A quantity that has both magnitude AND direction.

State whether each quantity described is a vector or scalar quantity.
1.  a hockey puck shot northwest at 60 miles per hour

2.  a tennis ball served at 110 miles per hour

3.  a sprinter running 100 meters north

4.  a parachutist falling straight down at 12.5 miles per hour

B
Vector: Directed Line Segment a

## Direction of vector: directed angle between the vector and the

horizontal line that could be used to represent the positive x axis.

## Magnitude: length of the vector |a|.

Quadrant bearing: directional measurement between 0 and 90
east or west of the northsouth
o
vector v shown is 35 east of south or southeast, written S35 E.

True

## True bearing: directional measurement

where the angle is measured clockwise
from north. True bearings are always
given using three digits.

The resultant of two vectors can be found
by putting them "Tail to Tip"

resultant of a and b

**can be thought of as the result of
multiple forces on an object, and
found by "adding" the two vectors
together.
