Section B [15 marks]
Answer one question only in this section.
7. (a) The volume of shampoo in a bottle may be modelled by a normal distribution with
mean 955 millimeters and standard deviation 5 millimeters. Determine the probability that
the volume of liquid in a particular bottle is
(i) exactly 946 millimeters [1 mark]
(ii) more than 946 millimeters [2 marks]
(iii) between 946 millimeters and 960 millimeters [2 marks]
A customer buys 10 of these bottles that may be regarded as a random sample. Determine the
probability that 8 of the bottles each contains more that 946 millimeters [3 marks]
(b) A school records data about the causes of injuries suffered by students in the school
compound. The data show that injuries caused by the defects inside the classrooms occur at
an average of 6 per year, and the injuries caused by the defects outside the classrooms occur
at an average rate of 5 per year. Assuming that all injuries are random and independent, find
the probability that at this school:
(i) during a period of 4 months, no more than 2 students are threated for injuries caused
by defects inside the classrooms. [2 marks]
(ii) during a period of 2 years, at least 4 students are treated for injuries caused by defects
outside the classrooms. [2 marks]
(iii) during a period of 1 year, more that 5 students but fewer than 10 students are threated
for injuries associated with defects inside or outside the classrooms.
