Exercises in course 11320

Introduction Building description 1-A: Draw an overall section of one of the office buildings
in scale 1:50 showing dimensions of structures.
Design basis Basic loads 1-B: Determine the characteristic value of all vertical load
actions (self weigths and imposed loads) on all
decks, assuming all loads to be uniformly distributed.
1-C: Determine the characteristic values of self weigth of
the structures in each supporting line, considering
these loads as line loads in each floor.
Load index plans 2-A: Draw load index plans for all levels in office buildings
and parking facility, including base slabs.
Load specifications 2-B: Write load specifications for the uniformly distributed
loads at all levels in office buildings and parking
facility.

Load carrying Horizontal structural 2-C: Suggest solution for ensuring vertical stability of the
members members base slab in the parking facility. Check magnitude of
resulting upward reactions.
3-A: Hollow core slabs under the roof, under level 1-3
and under level 0 in office building
3-B: Beams in inner supporting line, carrying the
elements mentioned in 3-A
3-C: TT- elements over parking facility
3-D: Beams in midle supporting line in parking facility,
carrying the elements mentioned in 3-C
Eccentricities 04-A Sketch out details of joints between the following
elements in office building:
- hollow core slabs and beam
- hollow core slabs and sandwich facades
- beams and column/column
04-B Sketch out details of joints between the following
elements in parking facility:
- TT-slabs and beam
- beams and column
Vertical structural 05-A Calculate the load actions nL, n0 and nR in the supporting line
members in level 0 – 3
05-B Calculate the load actions N1, N0 and N2 at the columns in
level 0 – 3 as a group for main case I-a and II-a
05-C Make design diagrammes for the columns for main case I-a
and II-a and check the capacity with the results from 05-B
06-A Calculate the vertical load actions nL, n0 and nR at basement
wall and facades level 1 – 3
06-B Calculate the lateral load action from earth and ground
pressure at the basement wall and check the capacity of the wall,
suggesting appropriate wall design
06-C Calculate the lateral load action from outward wind at the
facade wall in level 0 – 3 and check the capacity of the wall columns
between windows, suggesting appropriate design

Overall stability Wind load 07-A Determine the overall transverse wind force on an office
building as the total resultant on each floor diaphragm and and roof
diaphragm.
Horizontal load distribution 07-B Calculate the horizontal reaction acting at each stabilizing
wall at each floor due to the overall transverse wind force at the
diaphragms above level 0 – 3.
Stabilizing walls 07-C Show the result on elevations of each stabilizing wall above
the basement.
08-A Show destabilizing forces from exercise 07 together with
stabilizing forces on elevations of each stabilizing wall.
08-B Check shear capacities and moment capacity for each wall
element in level 0 – 3 for the two most critical stabilizing walls in the
system according to exercise 07. Calculate eventually needed
additional shear capacities and vertical reinforcement capacities at
each level.
08-C Show the resulting forces from 08-B acting on the substrure.
Floor diaphragms 09-A Suggest an arrangement of stringer reinforcements and
ties in floor diaphragm above level 0.
See voids for stairs attached.
09-B Suggest a suitable arrangement of additional walls in
basement (office building only) to ensure adoption of earth and
water pressure acting at the substrure.
09-C Estimate needed capacity of main stringers in floor
diaphragm above basement in office building.

above level -1, considering horizontal reactions from earth and
ground water pressure.
10-B Suggest wall/slab joint solutions, sections A and B
above level 3, considering horizontal reactions from wind
suction
Local slab solution 10-C Suggest a local solution for the floor slab at the plan
section marked
