PART-A

Answer all questions 7 X 2= 14


1. State the principle of minimum potential energy.
2. Define shape function.
3. Write the potential energy for beam of spam ‘L’ simply supported at ends, subjected to a
concentrated load ‘P’ at midspan. Assume EI constant.
4. Write shape functions for a 1D,2 noded element
5. What is meant by post processing?
6. Polynomials are used as shape function, why?
7. What are the properties of stiffness matrix?
Part-B

Answer any three questions 3 X12 =36

1) Describe briefly steps involved in Finite element Analysis.

2) The differential equation of a physical phenomenon is given by + 500x2 =0; 0<x<1 by

using trail function y=a1 (x-x3) + a2 (x-x5), calculate the value of the parameters a1 and a2 by the
following methods:
a) Point collocation method
b) Subdomain collocation method
c) Least square method
d) Galerkin method
3) A simply supported beam subjected to uniformly distributed load over entire span. Determine the
bending moment and deflection at midspan by using Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare with exact
solutions.
4) a) Define shape function. Derive displacement function u and shape function N for one dimensional
Linear bar element based on global co-ordinate approach.
b) Derive stiffness matrix and finite element equation for one dimensional linear bar element.
5) A steel bar of length 800 mm is subjected to an axial load of 3kN as shown in Figure. Find the
elongation of the bar, neglecting self-weight and dividing by bar into 4 equal parts.
6) The three bar assemblage is shown in figure. A force of 2500 N is applied in the x direction at node
2. The length of each element is 750 mm. Take E= 4x10 5 N/mm2 and A = 1200 mm2 for element 3.
Nodes 1 and 4 are fixed .
Calculate the following
i) Global stiffness matrix
ii) Displacement of nodes 2 and 3
iii) Reaction at nodes 1 and 4
7) Consider a taper steel plate of uniform thickness, t=25mm as shown in figure the youngs modulus of
the plate, E= 2x105 N/mm2 and weight density ρ = 0.82 x 10 -4 N/ mm3. In addition to its self-weight,
the plate is subjected to a point load p = 100 N at its mid-point. Calculate the following by modelling
the plate with two finite element:
a)Global force vector {F}
b) Global stiffness matrix [K]
c) Displacement in each element
d) Stresses in each element
e) Reaction force at the support
8) For the plane truss shown in Figure determine the horizontal and vertical displacement of nodal and
stresses in each element. All element have E= 201 GPa and A= 4x 10 -4 m2 .
