ePortfolio Check-In #4 Discussion: Reflecting on Your Learning

The document interpretation I completed on April 2nd based on the document

“First Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln” was a bit challenging but I feel I did a

pretty good job based on my grade and effort I placed in it.. This was an assignment I

found a bit challenging due to the fact that I don’t really don’t remember much about

Lincoln, I only recall a little from my younger days learning about him and what we read

in our text books. What I am learning now shed more light and understanding of Lincoln

and his actual role in freeing the slaves. After reading this article I learned that he wasn’t

actually what I once pictured him to be. Although he did right among the slaves he

actually believed that whites were superior to them, he just believed and honored the fact

that they had rights to and should be given their rights and freed. He also didn’t truly free

all the slaves like what you are taught growing up; Lincoln was definitely a major

contributor in this movement. He went to the south informing them that slavery will still

stand in the south but he will not allow the expansion of slavery since he has the authority

to due so.

His actions can also be believed to be made in order to take the focus off slavery

and on the union. Many factors cab contribute to his decision to make these laws against

slavery. Lincoln did right by not allowing expansion of slavery as well as not letting the

generals of the union be caught going against the law by freeing the slaves that run away
to join the union to fight. I learned a lot in this speech of his as well as backing it up with

other sources like our text book and john green videos that helped me understand

Lincoln’s speech better and his role in slavery. I chose this document because I knew

very little of the entire end of slavery role Lincoln had in history and diving deep into

researching it and dissecting the document really allowed me to learn things I never knew

and understand how the end of slavery truly began and what steps Lincoln took to end it

although his own personal views on African Americans.

This assignment I think was one of my best because I was able to conquer one of

my major goals in this course which was to add many references and more than one

source. I was able to get references from both our text and the John Green videos; that

was one of my greatest challenges to incorporate them all in the assignment. The fact that

I was able to do that and manage to get a great score built my confidence as well as show

me putting more effort pays off. I think document interpretations are helpful for my

future classes because it allows me to research and put in more work to find connections

to the main objective of the assignment. This was one of the assignments I was able to

conquer my challenge and get a great grade.
