Pointer Web Software

General
The software is based on the following fundamental principles:

The system is Web based and easy to use by non-technical staff.

It supports both an Access database and Microsoft database conversion of the system to a
multi-tier operation.
It is scalable to accommodate significant growth in fleet size on one central database.
Importing/Exporting of data and sending via email is possible.
Automatic software updates occur via an Internet connection without user intervention.
The GPRS solution, data streaming occurs through an Internet connection and a facility is
available to store previous information in the event that the Internet connection is down.
The software facilitates ‘Automatic SMS-Email Notification’ to notify the administrator of
mission critical exceptions such as speeding, illegal start, tampering, fuel siphoning, etc.
The software supports a virtual odometer so that odometer readings are established
independently from that of the vehicle’s odometer system that can be tampered with.

Communication

Communication between a vehicle, on the GSM solution, and Internet server is via GPRS which is
the most cost effective data transfer option.

Communication between Internet server and PC hosting the software facilitates a TCP socket
connection on a stipulated port or web service.

Pointer System Application

The system application (or set-up) is simple it allows the user to configure the system to their
requirement.

The system allows the user to add vehicles. , description, and odometer, Additional parameters are
configurable against each vehicle including rev limits, logging frequency and other hardware
specific parameters. Vehicles can be assigned to groups, allowing reports and exceptions by
vehicle groups (drivers). The system automatically prompts that the vehicle(s), (drivers) need to be
reprogrammed when any of the relevant data has changed.

An exception rules wizard guides the user through the creation of rules that the person wants to
enforce. Examples of rules that need to be enforced include:

No speeding.
No long stop.
No entering a restricted area or zone.
No leaving a defined operational area or zone.
No opening the door (or any other auxiliary trigger that monitors a change No stopping in
a zone.
No over-revving.

www.pointerafrica.com
The rules can be applied to all vehicles, a vehicle group or specific vehicle; all drivers, a driver group
or specific driver and allow for various permutations of the above.

The rules are easily redefined, updated or modified, and easily applied to either new or existing data
as required. The rule setting allows the user to apply the rules either during working hours only, after
hours only or both.

The system allows the user to set up working days and times as well as holidays so that if required,
certain rules can be set only for working hours (so as not to clutter the exceptions reporting).

The zone creation mode in the software supports the following:

Zones are polygons of any shape drawn onto a map.

Zones have descriptions which are user determined.
From depots etc, ‘customer zone’ for activity at strategic locations and ‘home zone’ for
activity to and from homes.

Help
Full context sensitive help is included.

Map Functions

The system supports vector, raster or Google format. It supports the overlay of zones, positional
points (including direction of travel), exceptions and stops.

The maps support zooming in and out. The zoom feature allows any level of zoom and
automatically switches to more or less detailed map sets in order to seamlessly give the user the
ability to zoom to any level. The maps support simple drag or panning permitting the user to move
easily across the maps. Pieces of joining maps are ‘stitched’ together on the screen to give a seamless
appearance.

The maps are printable at any point in time (with any data, any zoom or panning state).

Plot Logs

The latest position of selected vehicles on the real time tracking solution are displayed
simultaneously on a map i.e. the map extent on the screen accommodate all the positions. The
mapping also supports ‘auto tracking’ where the map extent is refreshed automatically to ensure the
latest position of the moving vehicle(s) appear on the map.

Options

The colour and pattern of displaying zones are transparent so as not to interfere with map detail and
information.

Pointer Hardware

Pointer Africa’s SkyLink LVU hardware is based on the following fundamental principles:

Vehicle tracking using GPS (Satellite) technology-GSM engine mounted in concealed place
inside the vehicle to avoid tampering
An electronic GPS antenna allows detection to alert any form of tampering from external
forces.
Automatic data capture and sensor interface capability, limits interference with the vehicle.
Low maintenance product.
Intelligent logging stored in accordance with actual driving conditions accurately recording
vehicle and driver activity in built up areas and on winding roads. This eliminates inaccurate
and inefficient profiling associated with time based logging.

Pointer Africa’s Skylink engine on-board memory provides logging positions to accommodate the
accumulation of data when the vehicle is outside GSM network data up to 100 hours between
downloading with passive tracking and data storage when the vehicle travels out of the GPRS
network with real time tracking.

The latest trip positions are recorded on a programmed second-by-second basis so that accurate and
comprehensive data is available for the last 100 minutes of a trip for accurate accident
reconstruction in the summary report.

Vehicle immobilization i) Key pad RF immobilization (dolphin 3) ii) Proximity RF immobilization

(iii) Remote internet immobilization (engine kill)

Data transfer from the vehicle to the software is through GPS-GSM/GPRS Protocol.

With regard to the GPRS solution, the data is automatically sent immediately it is logged by the
vehicle unit so that it is not necessary to poll the unit for information.

Firmware updates in the vehicle unit are possible using the selected data transfer solution thus
eliminating the need to remove the vehicle unit via the GPRS network.
The vehicle unit allows for auxiliary inputs due to its unique Enet connectivity capacity to monitor
external events i.e. door opening, fuel sensor, immobilizers etc. When such events occur, the system
will record the day and time of the event as well as the position where the event occurred.

Maintenance Reminders

The system allows for vehicle maintenance reminders such as servicing date, distance or engine
hours, etc to ensure vehicles are appropriately maintained to extend the life of the vehicle. All events
are user definable, and are able to be allocated per vehicle as required.

The maintenance reminder settings support recurring reminders that are either time based or
distance based as well as reminders for a specific event by a specific time.

Reports

The system has a multitude of reports. Each report has a unique set of parameters allowing the user
to select a period, vehicles, drivers and zones. The reports are printable and exported to Microsoft
Excel, allowing further editing or graph generation so that information is made graphical as possible.
The following reports are included by default in report module:

Activity – shows trip travelled, distance travelled, with an option to see and print data on Daily,
Weekly or Monthly.
Summarising working time fuel consumption
Log. Reports
Log reports include, Vehicle details activity
Vehicle and fuel activity report, cooling cabin temperature,
