What is Virtualization?
• Virtualization is the process of creating a software-based, or virtual,
representation of something, such as virtual applications, servers, storage
and networks. It is the single most effective way to reduce IT expenses
while boosting efficiency and agility for all size businesses.
• Types of Virtualization:-
• Server Virtualization
• Network Function Virtualization
• Desktop Virtualization
Physical Architecture

1. Physical server
2. Processor
3. Hard Disk
4. Memory
5. Operating System
6. Application

What is Server Virtualization ?
✓Virtualization lets you run multiple virtual machines on a single physical
machine. Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and
multiple applications on the same physical computer.

What is Hypervisor ?
• A hypervisor is a software that enables you to host multiple virtual machines.
Each virtual machine is able to run its own programs.
• A hypervisor allows you to access several virtual machines that are all working
optimally on a single piece of computer hardware.
• Types:-
• Bare Metal (Type 1)
• Hosted (Type 2)
Legacy Servers

• Servers were under-utilized.

• By virtualization, we can easily run multiple operating systems and multiple
applications on a single physical server.
Hypervisor
• Hypervisor is server virtualization software that runs on physical server.
• Two types:-
• Type 1: this hypervisor runs directly on hardware, which means you can assign more
resources to virtual machines. Examples are VMware ESXi, Citrix Xen, KVM, and
Microsoft Hyper-V.
• Type 2: this hypervisor runs on top of an OS like Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, or
Linux. We usually use a type 2 hypervisor on desktops or laptops. Two popular
hypervisors are Oracle VM Virtualbox and VMWare Workstation.
Virtualization Benefits

Virtualization Benefits

Consolidation
One-time event that moves existing applications
onto a fewer number of servers
Containment
An ongoing effort to virtualize new applications and
manage growth of existing ones

Availability
Introducing virtualization to increase application
availability and data recoverability
… there are many more benefits of virtualization
