1: Explain chemical reactions of alcohol compounds.

Two common reaction of alcohol are,

1)Dehydration

Dehydration is a chemical process of removing water from the molecule. In the presence of
strong acid, alcohol undergoes dehydration to yield the alkene. Dehydration may also refer
as elimination reaction. In the dehydration reaction, -OH and -H are eliminated from the
adjacent carbon atoms in the given alcohol to yield the alkene and water (H2O).

2. Oxidation

Alcohols will oxidize with oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and
chromic acid (H2CrO4) to yield aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids.

Examples

Primary alcohol yields aldehyde as final product whereas secondary alcohol yields ketones
as final product.

2. Describe applications of alcohol in the industries and in daily life.

The aplication in the industries.

 As a solvent: Ethanol like water is good solvent for many polar compounds.

 For extraction: Alcohol being a good polar solvent can be used for extraction of active
ingredient from any raw material like the plant or other solids.
 Cleaning: Alcohol is one of the best solvent used for cleaning in industry.
 Sterilization: Alcohol is one of the good chemical sterilizing agent used for sterilization.
 De-staining : When any cloth material in industry is caught by stains, alcohol is used to
remove stains.

The aplication in the daily life.

 Engine fuel. Ethanol is mixed with petrol to minimize the pollution, price of fossil fuels
and also greater energy.

 Clean marker stains: We tend to use markers often. These marker stains can be easily
removed by use of alcohols.

 Alcohol lamps are used in laboratories due to their non-suit flames.

 Beverages: Alcohol is used for recreation in the form of alcoholic beverages

 Nail polish remover: Nail polish is easily removed by ethyl acetate or acetone

3. Elaborate the differences between aldehydes and ketones based on their

chemical structure which determine their functions

Both aldehydes and ketones contain a double bond between carbon and oxygen.

Aldehydes have the double bond at the end of the molecule. That means the carbon at
the end of the chain has a double bond to an oxygen atom. Ketones have the double bond
anywhere in the molecule except for the end. That means we will see a double bond to
oxygen from one of the carbon atoms in the middle of the chain. If we got a solution and we
don't know if it's an aldehyde or a ketone, we can use Tollen's Reagent to indetify them. We
can add some of the reagent to our solution and if we see a silver colour, there is aldehyde
present. Tollen's Reagent has the formula [Ag(NH3)2]NO3  and it can oxidise aldehydes
but not ketones. If you add Tollen's Reagent to a ketone, nothing will happen.
