As we all know, the structural design of fiber optic cable directly refers to the structural
cost and operating performance of the cable and applicable design of its structure will
bring benefits in both aspects. It is our common goal to achieve optimized structure and
cheapest structural cost.

Usually the ADSS cable features two different structures, stranded structure and central
tube structure, and the stranded structure is more popular. Here are the structure
drawings of the two.
As we can see from the pictures, in the structural design of stranded ADSS cable, a fiber
reinforced plastic(FRP) is positioned in the center as central strength member, which
functions as central support for the the whole cable and is also called central anti-snap
rod, while no FRP is applied in the structural design of central tube ADSS cable. When
deciding the dimension of the FRP, it is relatively better to have a bigger one, but it not
the case “the bigger the better”, instead, suitable dimension shall be applied. Common
designs of stranded ADSS cable applies the structure of 1+6, and 1+5 structure is also
applied in some ADSS cable with less fibers. Theoretically, when fiber counts meet the
requirements, 1+5 structure may be applied to lower the cost. Actually, if the tube
diameter stays the same while the diameter of FRP in 1+5 structure is only little more
than 70% of that in 1+6 structure, the cable of 1+5 structure will be softer, which will
bring itself with a poor bending strength and further bring more difficulty in its
installation. And if 1+6 structure is applied while there is no growth in cable diameter,
tube diameter has to be lessened, which will bring difficulty in process art, because it
can be contradictory to the the guarantee of excessive fiber length which requires
enough tube diameter. So the the tube diameter must be moderate. After comparative
analysis in the testing results of samples with different structural designs, the 1+5
structure that applies φ2.2 tubes shares the similar cost with the 1+6 structure that
applies φ2.0 tubes. In the 1+6 structure, the FRP applied is of bigger diameter, which
makes it stronger in rigidity, more reliable and secure in structure and better in
circularity. The application of the structure of the cable and the fiber count in each tube
will have to be based on the their processing ability. Usually stranded structure is
applied in cables with big fiber count and big span. This structure can offer larger
excessive length and is mainly applied structure suitable for stem lines.

As to central tube ADSS fiber optic cable, its structural cost is relatively low. This is an
economical structure. Its relatively small outer diameter and lighter weight is favorable t
o reduce its wind load and ice load. Still due to its lack of central anti-
snap rod, the cable appears softer. Special handling method has to be taken during the in
stallation of armor clamp in case of damaging the cable. One thing that need caution is t
hat during the manufacturing process of the central tube ADSS cable special attention m
ust be paid to control the excessive fiber length and the jacketing art. Normally, this stru
cture is widely applied on the condition of small span or small tensile strength as an eco
nomical and practical solution. The fiber count of this structure can reach 48, fiber proce
ssed into cable with one time processing. It is the best choice for upgrading of rural net
work.
