Subject Strands Overall Expectations

French as a Second Speaking, Listening, The Ontario French curriculum requires


Language Reading Writing students to be able to acquire a strong
oral foundation in the language and focus
on communication, understand the value
of learning another language and
develop the skills needed to strengthen
traits of resilience and to secure a sense
of self, through opportunities to learn
adaptive, management, and coping skills,
to practise communication skills, to build
relationships and interact positively with
others
Language Reading, Writing, The language program in all grades is
Media, Oral designed to develop a range of essential
Communication skills in these four interrelated areas,
built on a solid foundation of knowledge
of the conventions of standard English
and incorporating the use of analytical,
critical, and metacognitive thinking skills.

Mathematics Number Sense + The program, like at all levels, is

emphasis in the junior grades should be
on building students’ understanding of
them- selves in relation to others.

Science These differ per grade The three major goals of the science and
technology program at the Junior level
are: to relate science and technology to
society and the environment, to develop
the skills, strategies, and habits of mind
required for scientific inquiry and
technological problem solving, and, to
understand the basic concepts of science
and technology.
Social Studies Heritage and Identity, In the social studies program, students
People and will work towards:

Environments - developing an understanding of
responsible citizenship; 

- developing an understanding of the
diversity within local, national, and global
communities, both past and present;
developing an understanding of
interrelationships within and between the
natural environment and human
communities; 

- developing the knowledge,
understanding, and skills that lay the
foundation for future studies in
geography, history, economics, law, and
politics; 

- developing the personal attributes that
foster curiosity and the skills that enable
them to investigate developments,
events, and issues.
The Arts Dance, Music, Drama, The focus of the arts program is on the
Visual Arts development of students’ knowledge and
skills in the arts and their ability to use
the arts to understand, explore, and
communicate feelings and ideas from
and about their multicultural, multimedia
environment.
