1. Please do a GOTE breakdown for your character. What is your character’s overarching GOAL?

What OBSTACLE stands in the way of that goal? What TACTICS, or methods, is your character
using to reach that goal? What does your character EXPECT to happen when they reach that
goal? NOTE: This is a DEEPLY TRAGIC PLAY, full of DESPAIR. Most of your goals and expectations
are likely to be…less than optimistic ones, although some of you may still be hoping or planning
for escape from the Greeks. I’m curious to see what you come up with. Feel free to get
inventive.

I have one character question for each of you. I’ll be providing one after every rehearsal. Here are
today’s questions!

POSEIDON: Are you suspicious of Athena’s sudden change of heart? She’s suddenly on your side
after having been aggressively on the side of the Greeks for YEARS. Are you pleased? Are you
worried? What feelings is this causing?

ATHENA: This was a pretty sudden and pretty aggressive change of heart. Are you usually like this?
Would you have reacted like this if ANY priestess of Athena had ben attacked in the Temple, or are
you particularly attached to Cassandra? Why or why not?

ERATO, PHILE, AGAPE, and ELPIDA: You are all captive women of Troy. Please, I want to know more
about you! How old are you? Are you married? Do you have children? Parents/living family? Have
you always lived in Troy? Each of you have almost certainly lost someone dear to you in this war.
Who was it, and how did it happen?

HECUBA and ANDROMACHE: You’ve lost everyone you love. If all your loved ones were still alive,
which single one of them would have turned to for solace and advice at this time? Why? What
would they have advised you to do in this situation, and, now that they’re gone, are you going to do
it or no?

TALTHYBIUS: What is your role in the Greek army, and with which of the Greek generals did you
travel to Troy? Did you have friends in the army, or even family? Or those people still alive?

HELEN: Please tell us, in some detail, the story of what happened behind closed doors when Paris came
and carried you off. What, if anything, did you feel for him? Since you did “allow” him to carry you off,
what were your reasons for doing that? Did/do you love your husband, or did/do you have respect for
him? Did/do you love Paris, or did/do you respect him?

MENELAUS: You’re furious at Helen, obviously. What are you the most angry about? What offense that
was committed in Troy is the worst? Was it the fact that she left you, or the fact that she led so many
men to their deaths? Is there someone in particular who you lost in the war who you miss more than the
others? Is that person Helen?
