FLESH TINT

A woman stands
Like a painting by Velasquez
Alone in a frame

Blossoming
At the touch of a brush of light

How did flesh tint get a glaze of Naples yellow

In this greenish-blue
Room?

How did the Sun rise

So unexpected on this palette?
The beggarwoman from Tulsi Pipe Road
The streetwalker from Chicago
Washed in what immortal light
With what mysterious clarity
Stands here
Stripped?
Venice, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome,
Florence, Castille, Nice,
Pune, Satara, Valsad, Palanpur, Jesalmer,
Tricchur, Kottayam
Hissar, Ludhiana, Muzaffarpur, Bhuvaneshwar,
Djjain, Jhansi, East Godavari, Karwar,
Vengurla, Alibag,
All geography is as colourless as linseed oil
The pigments have all come from the sky
Like a naked woman of the Ghats
Incandescent

(From Ekoon Ka.vita-1)

THE BEING ALIVE OF BROKEN THREADS

The being alive of broken threads

Of heat inside ash-covered embers
The life-long insistence
Of an oil-wick soaked too well
That bears the noose of a flame
The struggle
Of a bee
