A. Philosophy is a way o f thinking about the world, the universe, and society.
It works by asking very basic questions about the nature o f hum an thought,
the nature o f the universe, and the connections between them. The ideas

Feeding squirrels
M any people think that squirrels’ favourite food is nuts and seeds. It is not

nuts in their shells. The problem is that it is not always possible to find such
nuts in superm arkets and even in pet shops. Why not visit a nearby forest

W h y the seasons change

All people live on a big space body that we call the Earth. It m oves through
the Universe and consists o f stone and lava. The Earth goes around the Sun
m aking one full circle every year. Besides, our planet rotates around its own
axis — an im aginary direct line going through the N orth and the South Poles
o f our planet. One rotation equals one day.
The Earth is not placed vertically in space and has an inclination o f 23
degrees. T his angle is responsible for the change o f the seasons on the Earth.
It m eans that at different periods o f tim e som e regions o f the Earth are
closer to the Sun and get more sunlight and w arm th. For exam ple, the
Northern Hemisphere is closer to the Sun in sum m er and it is warmer, while

1
Тексты для аудирования 35

in winter the distance increases and the Southern Hem isphere moves closer
to the star. So the seasons depend on the intensity o f sunlight and how long
the sun shines during the day.
The changes o f the seasons do not affect the whole surface o f the planet.
The farther a country is from the equator, the bigger the differences between
the seasons are. People living in two different hemispheres have different
seasons at the sam e tim e period o f the year: when it is sum m er in Russia or
Germany, it is winter in A ustralia. In tropical and subtropical regions the
seasons differ from each other in the am ount o f rain.

H o w to learn a foreign language effectively

Psychologists know that our brain learns m any things by itself as long as we
give it enough inform ation and exercise. For learning a foreign language we
need real com m unication where we do not only do exercises, but also work
with different types o f information.
Each o f us has an inborn ability to learn a foreign language, which we
should ju st m ake use o f Though in real life it is not always simple to find
an opportunity to use a foreign language, especially if you do not leave your
home country.
Still you can think o f a few ways o f using the foreign language you are
learning. M ultim edia technologies give you a chance to watch film s in the

original or listen to foreign m usic. You m ay also use subtitles when watching
a video. But never turn them on in your native language, because the studies
have shown that this has no effect.
The Internet m ay also be a great educational m eans. People, who write
m essages in foreign languages on forum s and in social networks and chat
online with their friends from abroad, learn much faster.
If you like to sing along with your foreign songs, it is also very effective.
You learn new words and expressions by heart and broaden your vocabulary
this way. There are thousands o f com binations that you will use later in your
real life. A nd when we sing, it does not m ean that we do not think — on the
contrary, we ask ourselves why this or that word is used and how the text

A re canned products healthy?
Fruit is healthy, it is obvious. A nd what about canned food? Such products
seem really attractive and they last much longer than fresh fruit. Experts say
that canned or tinned fruit cannot replace fresh fruit in any way. At least for
a long period o f time. The fruit that you buy at the m arket or grow yourself
is much healthier. It is just a good way o f getting the kinds o f fruit which
are not available at a definite tim e o f the year, such as peaches in winter.
Тексты для аудирования 37

W hen you buy tinned fruit, you have to pay attention to the am ount o f
sugar inside. You m ay easily find this inform ation on the label. In som e
cases you m ay find products which contain little sugar. A nd these variants
are the m ost preferable and healthy. But it is not always the question o f sugar
only: such fruit lacks vitam ins and m inerals, too. T his happens because o f
the production process — to m ake the food last longer they prepare it in a
special way using a high temperature.
D rinking the juice from the can is not recom m ended. But if you want to,
then you should m ix it with drinkin g water to m ake it less sugary.
There is a very simple rule that everyone should eat five portions o f fruit and
vegetables a day. It m eans that one portion is a handful o f fruit or vegetables.
So we need three portions o f vegetables and two portions o f fruit. It is also
possible to drink juice instead o f eating fruit.

The oldest tree in the world
It only seem s that there is nothing special about this lonely tree in Sweden.
But the spruce (an evergreen forest tree with leaves like needles) is probably
the oldest tree in the world.
38 Тексты для аудирования

There is such а line in one o f the m ost popular songs: “I want to become
as old as a tree...” Naturally, not as old as this Swedish tree. It is about 9.500
years old. It is not a giant tree, though, and stands only 5 m etres tall and is
located in D alarna province in Sweden.
It was discovered in 2004 by L eif Kullm an, a professor o f physical geography
from one o f the Swedish universities. He gave it a nam e — “Alt Tjikko” after
his husky dog. It was possible to learn how old the tree was thanks to the
m odern technology o f radiocarbon dating.
D uring the Ice Age the surface o f the ocean was about 120 m etres lower.
That’s why some parts o f the modern North Sea between England and Norway
were covered in forest a long tim e ago. T his tree becam e so old, because o f
cold and special weather conditions in the area. Generally such trees are not
able to live so long.
The great tree does not look perfect any more. It is quite understandable,
because the harsh weather conditions have dam aged it. But it is possible that
the old tree will regenerate itself if the local clim ate gets m ilder in the future.
A guided tour, pre-booked only, takes tourists to the tree in summer.
The other oldest trees on Earth are located in California, North Wales,
Iran, Chile and Sicily.
