PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION: THE BASICS

It doesn´t matter what your business is, eventually you will be facing the
decision on which transportation method would be more appropriate depending on
the type of finish goods that you want to deliver. This decision is very important
because the wrong decision could be more expensive than required causing
unnecessary constrains in the budget. Usually if the wrong decision is made, it will
leave unsatisfied costumers.

When transporting goods, budget should be the key factor on the decision,
also the speed of the shipping as some products need to reach their destinations
faster than others. It is important to understand if your products have some type of
special regulation or must be transported under certain standards. Depending on
the value of your goods, insurance might be considered, especially if you are
shipping them by sea. If your products are extremely valuable even gps tracking
should be considered to ensure that delivery is done. Usually logistics companies
will recommend to label and specially pack fragile items, nonetheless accidents are
not uncommon during shipping

There are different shipping methods, there is by road, by air, by rail, by sea
and by courier. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, for example
road transport is cheap, and flexible but can be subject to delays depending on
traffic and road conditions. Rail transport is fast and reliable but can be very
expensive. The rail companies suggest shipping loads of over 300 tons, and over
150 miles for the method to be cost efficient. Then there is air freight, which is
without a doubt the fastest way, but is also the most expensive, and is also the
most restricted, not any kind of goods can be shipped by air, specially not if they
are flammable or hazardous. Sea shipping is the slowest, but is also probably the
cheapest and there is usually no weight restrictions. While curriers which are cost
effective in short distances but cannot carry too much weight.
