FilmArray® Torch LIS Interface

FilmArray Torch LIS Interface Overview TECHNICAL

The FilmArray Torch is capable of interfacing with a laboratory information
system (LIS). FilmArray test results can be electronically transferred from a
::: NOTE
FilmArray Torch to an LIS (unidirectional communication). There are two
components of the FilmArray Torch LIS interface: the FilmArray® Link software
developed by BioFire Diagnostics and the driver software developed by the LIS
or middleware vendor. To set up the interface, FilmArray customers will need to
obtain the FilmArray Link software from BioFire Diagnostics and the appropriate
driver from their LIS or middleware provider.
The FilmArray Link software consists of the FilmArray Link Software v3.0 and
panel-specific FilmArray Link electronic report modules. The FilmArray Link
Software v3.0 is a plug-in to the FilmArray Torch Software v3.0.
The FilmArray Link Software v3.0 functions as follows:

 The software retrieves test result data from a configured FilmArray

database.

 The data is sent to the corresponding electronic report module, where

the data is formatted into an XML file (an electronic report).

 The software then sends the electronic report to the bioMérieux

Communication Interface (BCI) Link software.

 BCI Link transfers the electronic report to the LIS.

LIS and middleware vendors will need to provide drivers that are compatible with
the FilmArray Torch. Each driver must be able to collect, read, and parse XML
files, as well as to reformat the parsed data into a form that can be read by the
LIS. Documentation is available from BioFire Diagnostics to aid LIS and
middleware vendors during driver development and can be requested through
the company’s website.

Purpose of the Document

The purpose of this document is to provide 1) a description of the FilmArray
Torch LIS interface, 2) instructions for setting up and configuring the interface,
and 3) instructions for troubleshooting the FilmArray Link software.

FilmArray Torch LIS Interface Setup

The following sections provide instructions for setting up a FilmArray Torch LIS
interface.
NOTE: The FilmArray Link Software v3.0 transmits the electronic reports using
one of two data transfer methods: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or shared folder
protocol. Drivers developed by LIS and middleware vendors will support one of
these data transfer methods. Determine which method is supported by the driver
and complete the appropriate instructions below to set up the interface.
BioFire Diagnostics recommends that the FilmArray Torch LIS interface
components are set up in the order outlined in these sections.

Set Up FilmArray Torch
::: NOTE
The following steps are performed by the customer (lab and IT personnel) to set
up the FilmArray Torch and to connect it to the network.
1. If required, perform a security review of the FilmArray Torch and make
any necessary modifications to the system (e.g., installing antivirus
software).
2. Set up the FilmArray Torch in the lab in the location to be used for
clinical testing if not already completed. Ensure the system is near a
network port.
3. Connect the system to the network via Ethernet cable.

Install and Configure FilmArray Link Software

The following steps are performed by the customer (lab and IT personnel) with
assistance from a Applications Specialist or Customer Support Representative if
desired.
1. Install the FilmArray Link Software v3.0 and the panel-specific electronic
report modules.
NOTE: Refer to the FilmArray Link Software v3.0 and panel-specific
electronic report module technical notes for installation instructions. The
FilmArray Link Software v3.0 must be installed before the electronic
report modules.
