Standard(s) 4.VA CR:1.2 Collaboratively set goals and create artwork that is meaningful and has purpose to the makers ELD: Interacting in Meaningful ways B. Interpretive 5. Listening actively to spoken English in a range of social and academic contexts Class Population 28 students. This lesson will have all that are present in class. This is a collaborative lesson that will include my IEP, ELL learners and my behavior issue students. Planning/Designing Learning Experience For this lesson, I created it from a book that we used in my Visual and Performing Arts class that I thought would work as a great way to not only incorporate art but to also allow these students to work together to create something as a class. Lesson Objective Students will be able to follow the rules and listen actively to what is being said to create a collaborative piece of artwork. Academic Language There is no real academic language in this lesson. the one that I could say would come up is the difference between what a circle and a dot are. Language Supports The language support that I will be using in this lesson is to go slow and repeat if needed so that they can stay on task and with the rest of the class. Materials and Resources Materials: butcher paper, markers Formative Assessment The assessment strategy I am going to use is to just watch after giving instructions on if they can follow along and do what it is asking them to do. Possible Challenges/Misconceptions One possible challenge that I could see with this lesson is that some students may not want to participate and may cause a distraction. My way of trying to combat that is by playing calming music in the background and to just encourage them to join as a class. Opening I will bring students into the class and ask them to walk in quietly and to take a marker from the table up front. I will then ask them to find a place to stand around the paper on the floor. Introduction Begin by explaining the objective which is Students will be able to follow the rules and listen actively to what is being said to create a collaborative piece of artwork. Explain that in order for this to work they need to listen to instructions carefully so that they are able to create a piece of artwork together. Remind them that they are not to just draw whatever they want and that the purpose is to listen and follow the directions together. Body of Lesson Teacher: Are you ready? Here we go! I want you to make a tiny dot. Students: make tiny dot Teacher: Stop. now swap places with someone Students: swap places Teacher: I want to see a dot that is even bigger. Reach out and make it a bit further away- not just in front of your nose! we have plenty of room so use up the space. Students: Make a dot Teacher: Swap places (students swap places) now i’d like to see a dot that is bigger still… a lot bigger and a lot futher away. Now I want you to switch colors with someone. Then draw a circle. Then a bigger circle. and another circle a lot bigger. Are you ready? Here we go! Swap places with someone new don’t be afraid to move down further. I’d like to see the biggest circle you can make. Now change colors with someone. We are going to make one more circle. Students: continue following instructions. Teacher: Listen carefully because we are going to speed things up. I want to see: dots on a dot dots inside a circle dots around a circle dots on a circle a circle around a splotch a circle around a circle Teacher: Now trade spots with someone again. Look at the picture you now have 30 seconds to add a dot, circle, sploth or even a spiral. Students have 30 seconds to make something else. Teacher: Now we are going to transform this picture that we have made. Listen carefully, to create our picture I want you to switch colors with someone choose 3 circles or dots around you and create a flower. Students: follow instructions. Teacher: now stop. Change colors with someone and then move to a new spot. DO it again. Students: Move to a new spot. Do it again. Teacher: Now I want you to stop. if there is any place where you think there should be some more color i want you to listen to the music and just make designs of what the music is making you feel. do this for 1 minute. Closure When the 1 minute is up, have them freeze. Tell the students to look at what they have created and explain that together they were able to collaborate on a piece of art that expresses them as a class and to listen actively to instructions. Accommodations/Modification/Differentiated Modification: If needed I can slow down to Instruction help those that might have trouble processing what is being asked of them
