DESIGN BRAINSTORMING (INDIVIDUAL DESIGN)
EVALUATION OF IDEAS

• Our overall groups general designs of how we would design our individual cars off of to
keep designs similar for interchangeability for group car testing
PROTOTYPE FOR GENERAL GROUP DESIGN
PROJECT MILESTONES & SCHEDULE

• Initial design concept and presentation: Presented in Class March 27th

• Individually decide on final designs and meet as a group: April 3rd

• Have final designs created in CATIA- April 9th

• Submit 3D Print and Laser Cut parts for design: April 10th

• Meet as a group and assemble final car: April 15th

• Finalize car design: April 20th

• Physical Performance Evaluation in class the week before finals: April 24th

• Final Submission: April 28th

GOOD DESIGN FEATURES

• Having a longer, thinner car

• Having a larger diameter for the wheels

• The moving part being a turbine or pinwheel

• Simplicity in the general designs

• Nothing too complex
SELECTED DESIGN (LATER CHANGED)
Original Final
• Back axle and the big gear axle
connected by rubber band to rotate
when car moves, rotating the gears
MASTER GEOMETRY & PRODUCT STRUCTURE
FINAL DESIGN (ISOMETRIC SKETCH)

• Final Design incorporating

wheel bearings and laser
cut acrylic wheel with
Purdue P shape cutouts in
them to add to the design

• Laser cut acrylic 50 and 20

tooth gears (Sketch
doesn’t show exact teeth
size and ratio)

• Simplistic, lightweight,
three-wheeled body design
to show uniqueness from
other classmates 4 wheel
designs

POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS

• Rethink the moving part mechanism to run more smoothly

because when tested, the rubber band put a lot of force on the
axles, restricting them from rotating and making the car not go
as fast
• Add a fourth wheel. When testing, it would go way off track and
its path was shaky and not as straight as it would have been
with four wheels
• Body redesign to give it some more weight
INDIVIDUAL CAR TESTING

• Testing conditions weren’t ideal as

my car hit the chairs close to the
testing area
• For this run, I still think that it would
have reached the maximum
distance of 27 feet
• Wasn’t my best tested run as you
will see in my evaluation results
• This run was recorded after completing
my official runs
GROUP CAR TESTING
• Very satisfied with our group runs
as they went far and straight pretty
consistently
• Group parts used:
• Strapped my big gear from my car to
the top
• Used Campbells body and wheels
• Chasidy's streamers for decoration
• Samantha's googly eyes to make it a
little fun

LESSONS LEARNED (WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE)

• Change the way my moving part worked

• Not have to try and worry about a rubber band having enough friction
but also not too much tension to prevent the axle from spinning
• Change the look of the body to have some more height while
also giving it some weight
• Give the car 4 wheels for the car to run straighter
