Executive Director Summary
As I write this, we are under Shelter in Place Orders
due to the coronavirus. Dentists are only allowed to see
medical emergencies. Many dentists have laid off staff or
are unemployed themselves. Everyone is idle and anxious to
get back to work. We’re all in a holding pattern as we wait
to flatten the curve of death associated with COVID-19.
Whether we live in a mansion or a shelter, the coronavirus
does not discriminate amongst its victims. Let’s hope as you
read this, that our “wave” has passed and life is beginning a
sense of normalcy.
We want to especially thank our partnership with
IndepenDENT Dental Solutions and Midway Dental who
were able to offer you a supply of two masks to help protect
you, your patients and your staff when you once again
resume your practice.
Retired Dentists Breakfasts are cancelled until August
12. IDDS Foundation has postponed its Vintage Evening,
originally scheduled for April 25. We’re still planning to
hold our Foundation Golf Tournament on July 15 and
our OSHA-BLS classes on July 17. But, life has a way of
happening as we make our plans, so we will wait and see.

A Win-Win for
Everyone Involved
Quite often I’m asked
why a dentist should be part of
organized dentistry. I won’t go
down the laundry list of what
I feel makes joining the ADA/
IDA/IDDS tripartite so relevant
and valuable to all dentists. I
did however, want to take time
to point out a tangible example
regarding the current Indiana
legislative session. Many of you
may have gotten notice through
email or text in January
regarding HB 1008 (House
Bill 1008) titled Licensure
Portability. The IDA supports
the ability of dentists to move
around the country and practice
in an area that they choose.
The title of this bill would, on
the surface, seem to support
that effort. The moment it
was introduced however, our
IDA legislative team alertly
discovered that it was designed
to eliminate barriers to licensure
for all regulated professions,
including dentistry, but took
out the Indiana Dental Boards
ability to consider CODA
accredited education as a
requirement for being granted
an Indiana license. In essence
if any state or province in the
country granted a dental license,
the Indiana State Dental Board
would be required to grant that
individual an Indiana license
no matter the type of dental
education that person had

an issue of allowing dentists
