ORGANIZATIONAL
COMMUNICATION

Organizational communication is the exchange of

information, ideas, and views within and outside the
organization. Organizational communication indicates
communication not only in business but also in
hospitals, churches, government agencies, military
organization, and academic institutions. Every
organization whether business or non-business has
some specific goals and stakeholders. Attainment of
those goals depends on successful communication with
the respective stakeholder groups.
FORMS OF ORGANIZATIONAL
COMMUNICATION

From a broader perspective, organizational

communication takes three different forms such
as:

1. Internal operational communication

2. External operational communication and
3. Personal communication
1.INTERNAL OPERATIONAL
COMMUNICATION

Communication that occurs for carrying out operations of the

organization is known as internal operational communication.
Internal members of the organization such as workers, managers,
board of directors, member of trade unions, etc. are the participants
of internal communication. This type of organizational
communication takes the form of oral and written. Oral
communication occurs through face to face conversation, telephone,
meeting etc. Written communication is done through orders,
instructions, reports, memos, letters, etc. In modern time, many
organizations provide intranet facility for internal electronic
communication.
2. External Operational Communication

Communication with external parties or groups is known as external

operational communication. External parties include customers,
suppliers, government agencies, regulatory authority, local
community, special interest group, and the general public.
3. Personal Communication

Communication that occurs for exchanging personal

information, ideas and feelings rather than business-related
information is termed as personal communication. Not all
communication that occurs in business is personal.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION
TODAY
As communication evolves, research continues to develop, and organizational
communication continues to redefine itself. In the early stages, this area
focused on leaders giving public presentations. More recently emphasis has
focused on all levels of interaction in organizations. Because interpersonal
relationships are a large part of organizational communication, a great deal of
research focuses on how interpersonal relationships are conducted within the
framework of organizational hierarchies.
Modern organizational communication research has been summarized into
five major traditions:
1) Communication channels.
2) Communication climate.
3) Network analysis.
4) the information-processing perspective.
5) the cultural perspective and political perspective.
CROSS FUNCTIONAL
COMMUNICATION
Cross functional communication is a group of people with
different functional expertise coming together to work
toward a common goal. In many cases, the team is simply a
group of people from the different departments across a
business working on solving a specific problem.

Communicating effectively is imperative to both professional

and personal success. A close-knit working environment that
emphasizes the importance of communication can positively
impact not only teams, but the individuals within those teams,
leading to a stronger workplace and greater organizational
effectiveness
BENEFITS OF CROSS FUNCTIONAL
COMMUNCIATION
We all work with people every day, whether it is within our
office.  space or on meetings with clients and members. The
Columbus Chamber of Commerce currently has more than
1,400 members, which makes it vital to understand how to
best engage our members. We understand that not every
person we interact with on a daily basis will respond to one
type of communication. Each and every member deserves a
distinct relationship, and it is our job to treat members in a
way that is unique to their preferred method of
communication. We have one-on-one meetings, topic-focused
consultations, a variety of targeted events, and follow-up with
a Member Satisfaction Survey to keep tabs on the
effectiveness of our communication to members.
