PHO331T Class Assignment2: TAF REPORT TRANSLATION

The codes were actually an Asian version from Hong Kong, the idea was to show you that the
codes can differ from one country to the other. Some of you tried to interpret them even though
there were confusions but I will not award a mark for this one but further practice will follow
after your test week. I tried to rearrange the codes on the South African format below and put
minor other changes for a better understanding.

Translate the TAF weather codes below issued at Wonderboom

was reported at 6500meters due to rain, there are 3-4 Oktas of cloud at 2000 feet,5-7 Oktas of
cloud at 4500 feet, the temperature was reported at 31degrees and the dew temperature at
28degrees, there will be some gradual changes from 17h on the 03 rd till 19h on the 3rd, as the
wind direction will change to 140 degrees and the speed at 16knots because of rain. There will
be other gradual changes from 02h on the 04th till 04h on the 04th as the wind direction will
change to 200 degrees with a speed of 10knots, there will be 5-7 Oktas of cloud at 2400feet and
temporary changes from 04h to 08h on the 04th with some rain, 5-7 Oktas of cloud at 1500 feet

be some other gradual changes from 02h till 05h on the 04th as the wind direction will be 200
degrees with a speed of 10knots, there will be 5-7 oktas of cloud at 1400 feet, there will be some

 e) Can you perform an aerial survey around the Wonder boom airport at 2000 feet and
have clear photographs under the weather condition reported in the TAF report at d?
Why?[4marks]
No because there is a full clod cover at 1800 feet (Overcast) so the aerial photographs will be cloudy.
