Introduction to Drawing Tools
Objective
➢ To study about the Use of different drawing tools

Theory
Drawing instruments :The most common instruments used for engineering drawing
are:
➢ Drawing Board Eraser/Rubber instrument Box
➢ Drawing paper T-square Protractor
➢ Pencil Set-square Compass
➢ Pins/clips Scales AutoCAD

Drawing Board :
It is a board or platform made of wood rectangular in shape. Size of board should be larger than
the size of drawing paper. Top surface should be smooth .

Drawing paper:
Drawing paper is the paper on which drawing is to be made. All Engineering drawings are made
on sheets of paper of strictly defined sizes,which are set forth in respective standards. Detail,
white drawing and Tracing papers are the types of drawing paper.A1,A2,A3,A4 etc. are the
different sizes of paper .

Pencil:
Pencils are used to draw the different lines, shapes, symbols and to write texts on Engineering
drawing.
Based on the hardness, lead pencils are classified in three major grades as hard ,Medium and
soft. They are further subdivided and numbered as mentioned below :

T-squares:
T-squares are used to draw the horizontal straight lines and used to guide the triangles when
drawing vertical and inclined lines.

Set-squares:
Set-squares are used to construct the most common angles(i.e. 30,40 and 60) in technical
drawings. They are used to draw the parallel and perpendicular lines quickly and conveniently.

Protractor:
Protractor is used for laying out and measuring angle.

Scales:
A number of kinds of scales are available for varied types of engineering design. Scales with
beveled edges graduated in mm are usually used.

Compass:
Compass is used to draw circles and arcs both in pencil and ink .It consists of legs pivoted at the
top. One leg is equipped with a steel needle attached with a screw and other shorter leg is
provided with a socket for detachable inserters.

AutoCAD :
AutoCAD design package is a powerful tool used to prepare desired drawings. According to the
instructions given by the mouse (or) keyboard etc. it prepares drawings to the scale. AutoCAD
prepares exact, precise neat and clean drawings. Drawings prepared by the AutoCAD looks
better than the manually prepared drawings .AutoCAD provides facility to correct errors, to
increase or decrease size, to store drawing in disc, to send drawings to other places by storing
inner disc, to repeat drawings in as many number as you want to rotate the drawing as you
desire.
AutoCAD provides various commands like circle,mirror,polygon,ellipse ,lines , arc, eraser, quick
trim,copy,delete etc.AutoCad software is used in Business, industry, education and research
projects etc. AutoCAD software offers following advantages :
➢ Accuracy :Autocad helps to achieve high degree of accuracy that is impossible to
achieve manually.
➢ Speed :with sufficient practice, a user can create the drawings specially similar objects
can be copied which saves time required for duplication.
➢ Space effectiveness :A computer can store thousands of drawing files over a long period
of time.

➢ Standard libraries : AutoCAD has libraries containing drawings of standard parts such as
gears, pulleys etc.
➢ Scaling:A drawing can be enlarged or reduced by a scale factor.
➢ Better visualization :Use of different colors helps avoiding confusion
➢ Freedom from using drawing instruments :A simple CAD system needs a computer with
a mouse, keyboard to draw.

Conclusion :In this experiment ,I studied about the use of different types of drawing
