The cable is used to connect Fluke 792A DC output to 3458A Input for measurements ≤ 20mV.
Software Environment
The automated procedure requires on-site installation of Fluke Calibration software MET/CAL (Revision 8.051 or later). The
system uses Fluke MET/CAL together with custom MET/CAL procedures saved as executables (MET/CAL pxe) - provided
to automate performance testing of Fluke 5790A and Fluke 5790B Mainframe to its published specifications. The automated
MET/CAL software uses csv (comma separated excel based file with a csv extension embedded in the pxe) file to propagate
DUT tolerance and measurement uncertainty. The csv file comes from a worksheet in the uncertainty analysis workbook. It is
the responsibility of each site to ensure that reported uncertainty is aligned with the site CMC claims and that non accredited
measurement are marked as such (driven through the uncertainty analysis file via the csv).
Environmental conditions
The calibration system and its uncertainty are designed to be used in a Calibration Laboratory with the following
environmental conditions:
Temperature: 23°C ± 3°C
Humidity: 15%RH to 70%RH
Altitude: 0m to 3000m
Personnel Requirements
Personnel qualified to work on this station shall have sufficient Metrology Training (both theoretical and practical) in
ECAL products calibrations. The training compliance shall be documented under the site specific quality system. In
addition the operators of the Fluke 5790X Calibration Station shall be familiar with this document and the requirements
set within this document and the automated software instructions to operate the system.
Controlling Documents
The verification points included in the automated software are as specified by the commercially available Fluke 5790A
Service Manual listed in the References section of this document as well as the proposed verification points for Fluke
5790B (Service Manual not released at time of this revision). Devices sold under contract with the Air Force follow the
Fluke 5790A/AF Addendum listed in the Reference section of this document.
Fluke 5790X Main Input Uncertainty Analysis .xlsx file provided with this system drives the uncertainty reported by the
software. Review by Metrology is required for each site installation. Edit the file as follows:
Worksheet “Uncertainty”
Edit column “Best Uncertainty” in the “Uncertainty” and “Unc 2mV – 20mV (100mV)” worksheets to reflect
the CMC of the site specific Scope of Accreditation.
Edit any individual component of uncertainty if necessary to reflect site specific measurement uncertainty.
Edit Colum “Accred. Step” in both worksheets to enable or disable the points accordingly to your Scope of
Accreditation. “1” stands for point that is accredited. “0” stands for non-accredited points.
Worksheet “Revision” – Document the changes to the document specific to your site. Save the xlsx file.
Open worksheet “5790_Main_Propagation” and save as “5790_Main_Propagation .csv” in the root directory of the
MET/CAL solution. Once the csv file is updated for lab capability each one of the project has to be rebuild into pxe file.
The csv file is embedded in each project and it is accessed during MET/CAL Run Time execution.

the loading corrections for Absolute Divider calibration. The corrections are derived during development and
Operation
To launch and operate the automated software, use the MET/CAL Run Time application to choose the MET/CAL
procedure. MET/CAL procedure files included with this system (hidden programming files are not included in this list).
Full procedure map is available as an appendix in this document.
The automated procedure has built in logic to evaluate the validity of the Fluke 792A “sn.dat” calibration date against
the calibration date in the MET/TRACK database. It is critical that the specified Fluke 792A is used as configured and
called in the connection messages. Failure to follow these instructions will result in invalid calibration result and
traceability for the entire calibration. If new Fluke 792A calibration is available the calibration record in the database
and the corresponding “.dat” file obtained from Fluke EPEL has to be updated per the instructions in section “Software
maintenance”. If using Agilent 3458A reference accuracy/stability reported by the automated software and as
documented in the uncertainty analysis is valid upon satisfying the following conditions: ACAL performed within 24
Hours or anytime the temperature of the lab changes by > 1° C
Note (only applies if calibration is run in sections (instead of running the Fluke 5790X Mainframe VER.pxe):
1. Procedures marked with ( 1 ) require “Fluke SL021 Characterization” procedure within 6 Hrs.
2. Procedures marked with ( 2 ) require “5790A ACAL System 5700A Characterization” characterization to be
completed within 30 days. This procedure also validates the 5700.cor/source match and monitors/enforces/logs
maintenance activities (weekly).
3. Procedures marked with ( 3 ) require “Fluke 5790A AC/DC: (2 year) ZCAL/ACAL VER 792A” procedure within
2 days.
The verification procedure follows the procedure listed in Fluke 5790A Service Manual (see references), where full
Input 1 verification is performed for all sections and abbreviated AC/DC and Absolute (> 220mV) is performed for
input 2. Exception to this rule is AF units – verified only for Input 1 and with special contracted AC/DC
specifications. This procedure allows selection of full calibration for Input 2 on all sections (including the divider
section). The full verification of Input 2 is optional and the added capability allows to accommodate special
customer requests. Lab owned devices are verified for full Input 1 and abbreviated Input 2, unless Input 2 full
verification is required by its use/Service Metrology. Additional option for downscale linearity on all ranges was
added for 5790B release. The full downscale linearity calibration is not performed for customer units. A short
downscale linearity set is built in the normal calibration run (Don’t have to select “Downscale Linearity”) in the
software. Additional option was added to support high frequency linearity in manufacturing – the 800kHz Check
Standard points are used whenever Check Standard is calibrated on the station.
System Maintenance
Software maintenance:
This automated procedure uses corrections to derive traceable measurements for:
1. AC/DC Transfer Standard voltage measurements. The corrections reside in the “sn.dat” file located
in the “792_datadir” directory as defined in the metcal.ini. The station requires up to date file to
ensure traceability. The corrections are passed to/requested from Fluke EPEL after each calibration.
The file has to be relocated in the specified above directory each time the Fluke 792A has been
calibrated. No changes to the EPEL provide file are to be made! The automated software performs
time validation of the “.dat” file and the Fluke 792A status in the MET/TRACK database. Whenever
out of cycle changes are required – the file has to be manually updated. Calibration date in the file
when an extension is issued is an anticipated out of cycle update.
2. The automated procedure uses corrections to output corrected DCV signals from the Fluke 57X0A
calibrator. The corrections reside in the 5700.cor file located in the “correctdir” location as defined in
the metcal.ini. The correction file validity is verified with each DUT run for age (< 30 days) and for
file/source serial number match. The serial number match is performed to eliminate the opportunity of
using a wrong file/source combination. No user maintenance of this file. Operator will be prompted
when new characterization is required. The process uses a modified correction file that contains the
following section (inserted immediately below the # Generated line) to allow insertion of serial
number during characterization:
Mode: SERIAL
3. Loading corrections for SL021 Divider (SL021_Loading_divider.ini). These corrections were derived
during the design of the system and are typical corrections for all SL021 dividers build under the
same BOM and dimension. The correction file is ini based and is to be placed in the metcal.ini
defined “RifWifDir” network location.
4. Loading corrections for Input 2 when a custom adapter with total length > 1.5” is used. The
corrections were derived through testing of typical device at multiple amplitudes and frequencies.
These corrections are lab specific and are a function of the adapter design. The corrections are saved
in the following file: 5790x_Input2_Loading_Corrections.ini
The correction file is ini based and is to be placed in the metcal.ini defined “RifWifDir” network
Accessories maintenance:
All cables and connections specified above in Station Accessories are cleaned weekly and evaluated for
wear by the operator. Maintenance tasks and log are executed within the automated software supplied with
the station. It is the responsibility of the operator to notify management (site specific organization
structure) when maintenance is required. It is the lab responsibility to maintain surplus of accessories to
accommodate replacement of worn out accessories. See Appendix A below shows examples of
acceptable/unacceptable states of cables and connectors.
Agilent 3458A (optional. Instead of Fluke 8508A) – Used with its published specifications for 1 Year with
ACAL. This uncertainty assumes that the device is calibrated following the Agilent 3458A calibration
verification procedure and that calibration laboratory performing the calibration has low TUR in
relationship to the published specifications of the meter. It is recommended that the meter is calibrated at
following Fluke authorized service centers: Everett, WA (USA), Norwich, UK.
Fluke PM6690 – calibrated following the calibration procedure in its manual. ISO 17025 calibration is
required. The calibration laboratory performing the calibration must provide Time Base uncertainty at
10MHz sufficient for TUR of 4:1 or better (function of the installed oscillator option). It is recommended
that the Fluke PM6666 is calibrated at an authorized accredited Fluke service center.
Fluke 732A. Calibration should be performed at an authorized accredited Fluke service center. The current
state of the procedure at time of this release, the procedure requires that cc_ui.exe (control chart) is
installed in the lab and linear regression data through limit files is passing the reference cell value to the
procedure.
Fluke 752A. Calibration should be performed at an authorized accredited Fluke service center. In addition
to calibration a self-calibration of the 752A should be performed within 8 hrs. of use or whenever the
752A has been subject to temperature change > 1°C since last self-calibration. Refer to Fluke 752A
Instruction Manual for self-calibration procedure.
Fluke 845A/AB – Calibration should be performed at an authorized accredited Fluke service center.
