Fluid Mechanics Module Lab Assignment Instructions

The Fluid Mechanics Module Lab assignment will serve as the assessment for Scientific Literacy, a
student learning outcome for this course. Scientific literacy refers to understanding and use of
processes, procedures, or evidence to solve problems or make effective decisions. Demonstration
indicates students can solve problems or make decisions employing processes, procedures, data, or
evidence.

Your evaluation for this assignment will be based on your knowledge of physics concepts,
organization, presentation, clarity of ideas, and how effectively you
1. Recognize science is evidence based
2. Recognize science uses observation and experiment
3. Understand the difference between a scientific theory and a belief
4. Understand the scientific process/method

ASSIGNMENT

Step 1

Select one of the topics in the Fluid Mechanics Module:

 Pressure: a) Pressure exerted by a fluid b) Atmospheric, gauge, and actual pressure
 Fluid statics: a) Equilibrium b) Pascal's principle c) Archimedes' principle f) buoyancy
 Fluid Dynamics: a) Equation of continuity b) Bernoulli's equation

Step 2

Develop an experiment to illustrate or verify the topic you have chosen. Your laboratory investigation
instruction must include the following sections:
 Section One: A descriptive title
 Section Two: Brief introduction to the topic (no more than one or two
paragraphs) and a list of the objectives of the experiment
 Section Three: A list of the equipment and/or materials required to complete
the experiment
 Section Four: Procedure, a description, step by step of how the equipment is to
be set-up, how the experiment is to be performed, and what data will be
collected
 Section Five: Data Analysis, provide the instructions for what is to be
completed for the data analysis (i.e. calculations, graphs) and any questions
that need to be answered. The results should reflect the accomplishment of the
objective stated in Section Two.
