6e Lesson Plan

DJ Olenchick

Science Area: Physical Science – Physics

Objectives:
Objective #1: TLWBAT recognize and explain that three objects have different masses and their
gravitational pull is greater or lesser.
Objective #2: TLWBAT sort and identify the different sized balls.

Standards:
Standard - 3.2.4.B1
Explain how an object’s change in motion can be observed and measured.

Grade: 4

Necessary Materials:
● Videos
o Newton’s Discovery-Sir Isaac Newton - https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=h48BWDeBLno
o Defining Gravity: Crash Course Kids #4.1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ljRlB6TuMOU
● 3 different types of balls
o Dodgeball
o Softball sized bouncy ball
o Superball
● Tape measure
● Stop watch
● Provided worksheet
● Exit Ticket

Time needed: 25-30 minutes approximately

1.      Engage:
● Teacher will introduce topic; common physics (Gravity, mass and force)
● Teacher will administer a provided worksheet that is formed into a chart for the three
different balls.
● Teacher will showcase a short video on Newton’s discovery (Gravity);
o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h48BWDeBLno
● Teacher will ask students what different examples of gravity are.

2.      Explore:
● Teacher will administer the materials that are provided in this lesson.
● Students will make predictions about what ball will fall the quickest.
● Students will explore and look at each of the balls.
o Big Idea Questions:
o Which ball do you think will reach the ground first?
o Why do you think that ball will get there quicker?
o What is pulling the balls down?
o How high do you think each ball will bounce?
o What ball will bounce the highest?
● Students will explore with the different sized balls.
o Big Idea Questions:
o Would it matter if we dropped them from different heights?
o Would they all have to be dropped from the same height?
o What ball will reach the ground first if we dropped them from the same height?

3.      Explain:
● Teacher will explain the properties of Gravity and mass.
● Teacher will explain why each ball has a different gravitational pull.
● Teacher will will explain why each ball bounces differently.
● Students will add to their chart.

4.      Elaborate:
● Students will classify and sort different examples of the balls by speeds and times into
their charts based on the characteristics.
● Students will apply knowledge they have obtained during classification and justification.
● Students will add to their chart.

5.      Evaluate:
● Students will complete an Exit Ticket that is supplied by the teacher.
o Exit Ticket Questions:
o What something in the room that would have a lot of gravitational pull (heavy).
o What ball fell that fastest? Why did it fall faster than others?

 6.      Exchange/ E-learning:

● We used this video to engage the students:
o Newton’s Discovery-Sir Isaac Newton - https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=h48BWDeBLno
● If there is any extra time we would show these videos:
o Defining Gravity: Crash Course Kids #4.1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ljRlB6TuMOU
o
● We could also have the students research more about gravity in nature on the internet.
