Since our last update on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020, NVHD has received 37 new reports of laboratory confirmed
COVID-19 cases across the Valley.

NVHD was notified of ten more COVID-19 associated deaths among Valley residents, including five males and
five females. All ten of the decedents were residents of nursing homes and/or assisted living facilities in
Seymour (6) and Shelton (4). The deaths reported to NVHD today occurred within the last week, not necessarily
since the last NVHD report. Nevertheless, it is unfortunate that this virus is attributing to so many deaths among
the Valley’s elderly and nursing home/assisted living facility population. This is a very sad and difficult time for
the families and loved ones affected by each passing. We also acknowledge how difficult this is for the
healthcare workers and caretakers who are somewhat of an extended family of these individuals. The NVHD
staff is keeping all the affected in our thoughts and prayers.

For public health surveillance, laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 associated deaths are defined as patients who
tested positive for COVID-19 around the time of death; this is not a determination of the cause of death. The
health district does not have any further details including whether or not there was underlying health issues.
The COVID-19 associated deaths reported by NVHD to-date have been confirmed through laboratory testing.
Additional data regarding Valley COVID-19 associated deaths is available below.

NVHD has linked free mental health and wellness resources for individuals, families, and first responders who
may be experiencing heightened anxiety, stress, and other emotions during this pandemic on the webpage:

Please be advised that some towns have multiple facilities reporting COVID-19 cases. Cases are reported by the
individuals permanent address, not the town of the facility in which they may be receiving treatment or
recovering. This data is subject to change since some individuals may end up leaving a facility to recover at
their permanent place of residence.

When an individual or worker tests positive for COVID-19 within an assisted living facility and/or nursing home,
the investigation is led by the State Department of Public Health (DPH) and the State Facility Licensing and
Investigation Section (FLIS). The NVHD remains in communication with the facilities as well as our state agency
partners during the investigation.
