1 SCOPE
This procedure covers the overseas packaging & preservation requirements for
shipment at jobsite of the following loose items:

• SGF Riser
• AGF Riser
• SGF Molecular Seal
• AGF Molecular Seal
• SGF KO Drum
• AGF KO Drum

This procedure shall be supplemented by preservation requirements specified by the


manufacturers.

2 PURPOSE OF PACKING AND PRESERVATION


The purpose of packaging is to safeguard materials during transport, handling and
extended period of storage at the jobsite for a minimum period of 12 months from the
date of dispatch.
Equipment shall be protected to safeguard against mechanical damage and all
adverse environmental encroachment (such as rain, humidity, moisture,
temperature, variations, frost, salt spray, salt air, dust, sand, mud, sea water, vermin
or other foreign bodies, etc.).

4 Marking Requirements
4.1 IDENTIFICATION AND TAGGING

Vessels or section of vessels shall be clearly identified by painting or


dye stenciling the Purchase Order number and the vessel Equipment
number in a conspicuous location on the shell, head, or support.
Vertical vessels shall be marked on the base and first 300 mm (1 foot) of skirt,
indicating the north, south, east, and west co-ordinates. The co-ordinates shall
be indicated with a painted line and letter for each, according to the orientation
shown on the vessel drawings. The markings shall be made on the shell near
the bottom tangent line if the vessel does not have a skirt.
Horizontal vessels shall have one head marked north, south, east, or west as
identified on the vessel drawings.
The center of gravity shall be marked on all vertical vessels by painting a
continuous 150 mm wide circumferential stripe. The letters “CG” and the
shipping weight in metric tons (1000 KG) shall be painted at 2 locations

diametrically opposite and adjacent to the stripe. The location of the center of
gravity specified on vessel drawings is as fabricated.
The color of paint for marking and lettering shall conspicuously contrast with
the vessel surface, and shall be compatible with the paint system.
Vessels or vessel parts that have been subjected to PWHT shall be clearly
marked "Postweld Heat Treated - Do Not Flame Cut Or Weld On This
Vessel." The above requirements shall be clearly marked on each side of
the vessel in 75 mm high block letters with a contrasting color and shall be
clearly visible.
Vessel nameplates shall be in accordance with PROJECT standard drawing.
All markings painted on vessel shall be clearly visible in the shipping position.
Vessels that have been internally coated shall be clearly marked “Internally
Coated – Do Not Flame Cut or Weld on this Vessel.

Number of packages should be consecutively. Each package shall be well visibly marked
on one side with indelible paint as indicated.
The shipping mark shall be stenciled on two opposite side with black, indelible and sea
waterproof paint as follows.

The symbols must be placed at visible spots. One shall not use more symbols than strictly
necessary.

All packages shall be clearly and properly marked in English language if not
otherwise specified with indelible paint stencilling.
If possible marks shall be in minimum A4 size (21x29,7 cm) and on larger
packages A3 size
(42x29,7 cm).
The texts shall be printed by means of stamps, stencil-plates or electronically.
The use of stickers is not allowed, unless securely covered by plastic.
Bundles and loose items shall be supplied with at least two metal labels
bearing the shipping marks
and placed on each side of the package.

5 PACKING REQUIREMENTS
SHIPPING SUPPORTS

a. Vessels shall be furnished with shipping saddles and tie downs.


b. Horizontal vessels shall be shipped on their own supports.
c. Steel and/or heavy timber shipping saddles shall be provided for vertical vessels.
d. The shipping saddles must be attached to the vessel with straps or clips. The saddle and attachment
shall be designed so that the saddle remains attached and functional after has been lifted from ships.
e. The saddles and vessel must be designed to withstand all loading supplied by the shipping company.
The saddles shall also be designed with a jacking lug or surface on each end of each saddle. The
jacking lug or surface shall project beyond the edge of the shipping trailer. After arrival at the jobsite,
the saddles with attached vessel shall be jacked up so that the shipping trailer may be pulled out from
underneath the saddles.

GUIDLINE FOR SHIPPING SADDLES

f. Attachments and tackle for securing vessel to transport shall be suitable to prevent any horizontal or
rotational movement of the vessel.

g. Shipping saddles shall be located approximately symmetrical each side of the vessel’s Centre of
Gravity. Shipping saddles and vessel shall be designed for the following forces acting simultaneously
during transit, as a minimum:
Longitudinal 0.6g
Transverse 0.7g
Vertical upwards 0.2g and Vertical downwards 1.5g

h. Shipping saddles strength shall be suitable for being supported at each end of saddle on 1-square
meter supports during shipment and storing for up to 6-months, without causing deflection of the
saddle base and locally stressing the vessel above its design limits.

i. The shipping saddle base shall be suitable for securing to the transporter by clamping or bolting.

j. Sizes of shipping saddles are dependent on method of transportation and method of lifting on to
transporting vehicle. Dimensions shall be agreed during design Engineering.

Typical lengths of saddle base supports are:

4.9m long for 3.0m width bogie


5.5m long for 3.65m width bogie
6.3m long for 4.8m width bogie
7.8m long for 6.2m width bogie

k. Saddle height to be a minimum to reduce overturning forces, but enough for vessel attachments
Projecting downwards to clear surfaces on which it is to be placed.

l. Vessel is to be attached securely to the shipping saddles.

m. Shear stops are to be fitted to prevent rotation about the shipping saddle during lifting and unloading.
Shear stops and method of attachment shall be agreed with COMPANY.

6 PRESERVATION REQUIREMENTS
Site storage will be required for a minimum period of 24 months after delivery to site. Additional
preservation measures will be taken and following techniques shall be followed.

6.1 STORAGE AREA

a. A warm, clean, dry and vibration free environment in a secure under cover storage area is required.
Pressure Vessels to be stored in a level and upright position.
b. Before the equipment is stored, either at the manufacturer’s works or during the various stages of
transport or at the installation site, the storage area must be properly drained and cleared of stones
or items with sharp edges.
c. Place the equipment on skids, pallets or dunnage to keep from resting in collected drainage or on
timber baulks, away from construction working areas.
d. Equipment will be stored with all nozzles or support steel clear off the ground.
e. Equipment transportation supports or saddles and temporary stiffening will be checked for
soundness.
f. Ensure that nameplates are undamaged and secure.
g. Sound protective coatings, subject to periodical inspection, are acceptable alternatives to
covered storage. Again ensure that all nameplates are undamaged and secure.

6.2 PROTECTION, CLEANING AND SEALING

a. Each vessel shall be thoroughly cleaned inside and shall be free from grease, weld spatter, scale,
slag, rust, and other foreign matter. No cleaning agent containing chlorides will be used on austenitic
stainless steel material. Where exterior sandblasting and painting is required, the vessel shall first be
sandblasted and painted.
b. All gasket and machined surfaces shall be cleaned with solvent and coated with grease.
c. Manholes and nozzles fitted with regular blind flanges shall have the blind flanges installed
using the test gaskets.
d. Flanges, other than those furnished with permanent blind flanges shall be covered with a 12mm thick
plywood or 3 mm thick steel plate no smaller than the flange OD and secured with a
minimum of 4 bolts. A rubber gasket shall be placed between the cover and the nozzle.
e. All other openings shall be closed as mentioned below. Equipment shall be made watertight.
It is preferred that all equipment items are hermetically sealed; however, this is not practical for
certain large equipment items. When the equipment body is to serve as a barrier to prevent the entry
of dirt, insects, or corrosive atmosphere, the equipment openings shall be tightly sealed as follows:
i. Open flanges - Open flanges shall be fitted with a steel cover and an oil resistant rubber or
neoprene gasket and bolted with sufficient bolts to provide a weather-tight closure. Steel

covers shall never be thinner than 3 mm or 2 percent of the cover diameter (whichever
is greater).
ii. Threaded openings - All threaded openings shall be plugged or capped after threads have
been coated with a grease base corrosion preventive. Plugs shall be long shank and of the
same material as the tapped body.
iii. Stub openings - All stub openings such as bevelled pipe projections shall be protected with
wood, plastic or soft metal covers and sealed by a polyethylene wrap (0.20 mm
minimum thickness) secured to the stub by a tight wrapping of "metal duct tape".
iv. Shaft projections - The bearings through which shafts penetrate the equipment case must
be sealed both to protect the bearing and prevent the entry of corrosive atmosphere
into the equipment. The seal shall be made using polyethylene film and metal duct tape.
v. Other openings - Other equipment openings such as vents, weep holes, etc., shall be
sealed with "metal duct tape" or a combination of polyethylene film secured with "metal duct
tape."
f. Weld-prepped ends shall be provided free of burrs and sharp edges and shall be provided with steel
weld bevel protectors.
g. Screwed couples shall be fitted with bull plugs, and socket weld bevel protectors.
h. Machined surfaces, threads, and weld preps, except austenitic stainless steel material, shall be coated
with heavy rust preventative grease. Alternative protection materials shall be used for austenitic
stainless steels and these substances must be free of chlorides, lead, and zinc.
i. Special vessel openings shall be provided with suitable closures designed by the Manufacturer.
j. Internal and external parts and piping assembled with the vessel shall be suitably supported and
braced to prevent damage during handling and transporting.
k. Spare gaskets and spare bolting hardware shall be wrapped in a water tight barrier material and
enclosed in plywood containers marked with the P.O. number and equipment item number and shall
be securely attached to the vessels.
l. Parts shipped or stored loose from the vessel, except gaskets, are to be shop fit up by the
Manufacturer for field fit up prior to shipment or storage.

6.3 INTERNAL SURFACES OF EQUIPMENT

a. Internal surfaces of equipment shall be thoroughly cleaned of metal particles, dirt and debris.
b. Internals of equipment that can be made airtight by use of flanges or plugs shall have internal
surfaces with Silica gel (material safety data sheet attached) and the openings sealed.
Equipment shall be tagged to indicate the type of internal preservative used. Tags shall be
waterproof and tear-resistant and shall be attached with stainless steel wire. Information shall
include the part(s) preserved, the type of preservative used.

6.4 SILICA GEL

a. Silica gel shall be used for the internal protection of pipes, drums, identical equipment,
preferably in non-hydrocarbon services. The equipment shall be closed thoroughly not to allow vapor
accumulation. Inspection at regular intervals is required.

b. Temporary covers of nozzles or openings shall be removed. Machined flange faces shall be
cleaned and re-protected, and covers shall be repaired where ever necessary, Non-suitable
covers will be replaced by wooden covers.
c. All exposed bolts and flanges shall be coated with rust preventive. Verify openings for non-
installed instruments. These shall be plugged or blanked off.
d. 1 Kg / 4 m3 Silica gel shall be applied inside the vessel. Silica gels crystal were packed and kept inside
the cotton cloths. The desiccant shall be packaged to prevent direct contact with vessel interior
surface.

7 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

a. All personnel involved will use necessary Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) as required such as
Safety Helmet, Welding Helmet, Shoes, Gloves, Glasses, Ear Plugs etc.
b. The Workers will be made aware of safety requirements related to this activity through daily tool box
and safety talks.
c. All required work permits will be acquired and kept available at respective work sites hanged clearly in
plastic folders or posted in permit boxes.
d. Safety notice board will be installed.
e. All equipment will be visually checked for errors by QC inspector prior to use.
f. MSDS for all the chemicals/substances i.e oxygen scavenger, biocide, and corrosion inhibitor to be
used should be explained to workers and should be available at point of use.
g. Suitable and adequate access/egress shall be maintained.
h. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of all chemicals/substances used shall be forwarded to Health,
Safety & Environment (HSE) department.
