Worksheet Nr. (6)

Applications of Systems of Linear Equations

Exercise 1.

0.1 of the total output from coal industry goes to the steel industry, and 0.7 of the total
output goes to the electric power industry. 0.4 of the total output from the electric
power industry goes to the coal mines, and 0.5 of the total output goes to the steel
plants. 0.6 of the total output from the steel industry goes to the electric power industry,
0.3 of the output goes to the coal industry.

Find the prices of steel, coal, power, such that the cost to each industry is balanced with
the income – Find an equilibrium price ?

Exercise 2.

April sold 75 tickets to a school play and collected a total of $495. If the adult tickets cost
$8 each and child tickets cost $5 each, how many adult tickets and how many child
tickets did she sell? (Use the matrices).
Exercise 3.
An economy has the two industries R and S. The current consumption is given by the table

Consumption
R S External
Industry R production 1/3 1/4 20
Industry S production 1/2 1/5 100

Find the required output.

Exercise 4.
The downtown core of Gotham City consists of one-way-streets, and the traffic flow has been
measured at each intersection. For the city block shown in the figure, the numbers represent the
average numbers of vehicles per minute entering and leaving intersections A, B, C, and D during
business houres. Set up and solve a system of linear equations to find the possible flows 𝑓1 , … , 𝑓4 .
