Services Required: Organizer for Local Union

Dates: April 2020 – April 2021


Location: Chicago and Chicago Heights, Illinois and Crown Point, Indiana
The Local Organizer is an independent contractor position, currently funded for a twelve-month
project.

Organizational Description
The position is located at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, its assigned Community Based
Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), and Vet Centers. Must be familiar and comfortable with organizing
professional employees.

Scope of Work
The contractor will support the overall growth of the local by maintaining continual presence
with the bargaining unit employees (BUEs) throughout the main hospital, CBOCs, and Vet
Centers. The organizer will accomplish this through a variety of outreach and organizing
techniques.

The contractor will support sustained bargaining unit member (BUE) engagement in various
campaigns to allow for effective and prompt responses to crises and opportunities as they arise.

Expected Deliverables:
· Facilitate and support initiatives that move the campaign forward, strengthen the coalition’s
base, and build skill and capacity of members
· Travel to sites to engage members, build relationships, identify common interests, and engage
in campaign initiatives.
· Engage the Local’s members in representing union on committees and at meetings, speaking
with legislators and press, rallies, letters to the editor, social media, action alerts, etc.
· Support a variety of engagement types of members (leadership, participant, supporter) and
variety of advocacy styles of (direct action, influential relationships with decision makers, etc.)
· Participate at a leadership level in campaign strategy and messaging.
· Coordinate Local with national campaigns and other local labor and community groups.
· Create and distribute Local communications such as newsletter, website, and/or social media.
· Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
· At least 3-5 years’ experience in community organizing, public policy and/or advocacy work
· Excellent judgment and the ability to navigate complex organizational relationships with a
high-degree of professionalism and interpersonal skill.
· A self-starter with a can-do work ethic. Able to think creatively and problem-solve to reach
goals.
· Ability to adapt to change and persevere in a challenging political climate.
· Ability to communicate effectively with people from different perspectives and possess a
passion and talent for finding common ground amidst differences.
· Willingness and ability to travel as needed (estimated 15-20%).

Compensation
The organizer position is an independent contractor position, currently funded for a twelve-
month period beginning as soon as a contractor is selected. For tax purposes, the person who is
selected is considered an independent contractor and shall be issued a Form 1099 by AFGE
Local 789 for the work completed under this
contract. AFGE Local 789 will not provide health, dental, vision or any other insurance benefits
or make any tax, benefit or other withholdings.
