Operations - Heading Control
¾ The ship will maintain a heading selected to achieve an optimum combination of:
¾ Minimizing thrust/power requirements.
¾ Minimizing FPSO roll.
¾ Avoiding flare fumes in accommodation/bridge areas.
¾ Flare tower and IG vent riser are both located on the starboard side of the
forecastle. Normally, the FPSO will be operated with the wind on the port bow, to
allow exhaust fumes and vent gas to exit the FPSO to starboard.
¾ If gas is detected on deck, the FPSO will, if the weather conditions allow, be
turned beam to wind or even with wind on port quarter, to facilitate natural
ventilation off the deck and away from safe areas.
¾ When a heading change greater than 5 degrees is initiated, the DRB will
automatically turn the same azimuth angle in opposite direction to maintain geo-
stationary azimuth and avoid twist of the risers.
¾ The DRB turning system is consequently a safety critical feature and is operational
even with gas on deck.
