ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS (2019-20: EVEN) BATCH: 2016

SUBJECT: System Modeling and Simulation CODE: 15CS834

1. Describe the characteristics of queuing System.

2. Explain the different queuing notations.
3. Customers arrive at random to a license bureau at a rate of λ= 50 customers per hour.
Currently, there are 20-clerks, each serving π= 5 customers per hour on the average.
Calculate the busy time or average utilization time (Steady state) of a server (clerk) and
average number of busy servers.
4. Discuss various steady state parameters of M/G/I Queue (with Poisson arrival and unlimited
capacity).
5. Widget-making machines malfunction apparently at random and then require a mechanic's
attention. It is assumed that malfunctions occur according to a Poisson process, at the rate
λ=1.5 per hour. Observation over several months has found that repair times by the single
mechanic take an average time of 30 minutes, with a standard deviation of 20 minutes. Thus
the mean service time 1/µ = 1/2 hour, the service rate is µ= 2 per hour and σ 2 = (20)2
minutes2 = 1/9 hour2. The "customers" are the widget makers, and the appropriate model is
the MIG/I queue. Calculate the proportion of time the mechanic is busy and average number
of broken machines.
6. There are two workers competing for a job. Able claims an average service time that is
faster than Baker's, but Baker claims to be more consistent, even if not as fast. The arrivals
occur according to a Poisson process at the rate λ = 2 per hour (l/30 per minute). Able's
service statistics are an average service time of 24 minutes with a standard deviation of 20
minutes. Baker's service statistics are an average service time of 25 minutes, but a standard
deviation of only 2 minutes. If the average length of the queue is the criterion for hiring,
Calculate the average queue length and decide which worker should be hired with
justification?
7. Suppose that the interarrival times and service times at a single-chair hair-styling shop have
been shown to be exponentially distributed. The values of λ and µ are 2 per hour and 3 per
hour, respectively. The interarrival time averages 1/2 hour and the service time averages 20
minutes. Estimate the server utilization and the probabilities for zero, one, two, three, and
four or more customers in the shop.
8. Discuss various steady state parameters of M/M/I Queue.
9. Discuss various steady state parameters of M/M/c Queue
10. Define network of queue. Mention the general assumptions for a stable system with Infinite
calling population.
