UNIT-1
ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO. 1

Subject Name: Special Electrical Machines Subject Code: REE-064

Name of Course Coordinator: Mr. Vikash Tiwari

Date of issue: --/--/2019 Date of Submission: --/--/2019

1. Draw & discuss the torque-slip characteristics of a 3-phase induction machine in all
modes of operation. Show that the maximum electromagnetic torque in a poly-phase
induction motor is independent of rotor circuit resistance.
2. The rotor resistance and reactance of a 4-pole, 50Hz, 3-Ф slip ring induction motor are
0.4 & 4Ω/phase respectively. Calculate the speed at maximum torque & the ratio of
maximum torque to starting torque. What value should the resistance / phase have so that
the starting torque is half of maximum torque?
3. Discuss the construction, working, torque-speed characteristics & salient features of a
deep-bar cage induction motor.
4. A three phase 400V double cage induction motor has per phase standstill leakage
impedance of (2+ j2.5)Ω and (0.5+ j10)Ω for its two cages. Find the relative values of
torques given by each cage.
(i) At starting (ii) At 5% slip
5. If the outer cage has an equivalent impedance of (0.6 +j0.6) ohm and the inner cage
an equivalent impedance of (0.1 + j0.8) ohm both at supply frequency, calculate the
current and torque in synchronous watts for the two cages at standstill and at 10%
slip. The effective standstill e.m.f. of each cage is 200 V.
6. Describe the construction, working, equivalent circuit and torque-slip characteristics of
double-cage induction motor. Compare deep bar induction motor with a double cage
induction motor.
7. A 6-pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase induction motor running on full load develops a useful
torque of 160 Nm at rotor frequency of 2 Hz. Calculate the shaft power output, if the
mechanical torque lost in friction and that for core losses is 10 Nm. Compute,
(i) Copper loss in rotor winding
(ii) The input to the motor
(iii) The efficiency, if The total stator loss is given to be 800W.

ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO. 2

Subject Name: Special Electrical Machines Subject Code: REE-064

Date of issue: --/--/2019 Date of Submission: --/--/2019

1. Explain the principle of slip control by slip frequency EMF injection in rotor circuit with
neat sketch.
2. Explain the principle of static Kramer system for constant power operation.
3. Explain the principle of static scherbius system for constant torque operation.
4. Explain the constant torque and constant power controls of slip ring induction motor
drives.
5. A slip power converter is directly connected to a 3- phase 50 Hz wound rotor induction
motor having 6 pole. Induction motor is used to control the speed of a load requiring
torque proportional to the cube of its speed. if the speed is vary between 60 to 600 rpm and
load needs a power of 5KW at 600 rpm then determine the power handled by the slip
power converter in terms of slip when slip power returned to the supply. Also determine
the value of slip power and motor in put at 60 and 600 rpm and amount of maximum
power that the slip power convertor can carry. Neglect losses.
6. Explain equivalent circuit of double cage induction motor. A 3 phase,8 pole 50 Hz, 440
volt induction motor develop maximum torque at a slip of 8 %. In a particular application,
it runs at 3% slip at rated voltage, driving a load to stop demand is proportional to square
of speed. What is the maximum value to which the supply voltage can drop, if the speed of
the motor is not to decrease below 950 rpm? Neglect stator impedance drop.
7. A 3 phase, 50 Hz, 12 pole 200 kW slip ring induction motor drives a pump whose torque
is proportional to the square of speed. At full load the motor slip is 0.045. the rotor
resistance measured between any two slip ring is 0.61 mΩ. What resistance should be
added in the rotor circuit to reduce the speed of pump to 450 rpm?
8. A 3-Φ, 420 V, double cage induction motor has per phase standstill leakage impedance of
3 + j1.0 Ω and 0.5+ j6.0 Ω for its two cages. Calculate the starting torque in terms of full
load torque with direct-on-line starting.
