Recent tests conducted by the Consumer Council have shown some surprising results. Among the most
popular packaged foods in the market, 50 of 73 samples contained excessive salt; ten items contained
two or three times more than the recommended daily intake. Also, food in 63 of 100 restaurants tested
contained ‘high’ or ‘very high’ levels of salt, which greatly exceed the daily recommended intake of
sodium and could be harmful to our health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises people to consume no more than 5g of salt (about a
teaspoonful), or 2,000 mg of sodium, each day. Eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure,
obesity and heart disease.

‘Consumers ought to read the labels on food packaging to make sure the items do not contain too much
salt,’ Dr Ng, chairperson of the Council’s publicity and community relations committee, said.
