Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction

“We are all connected by the Internet, like neurons in

a giant brain.”
– Stephen Hawking (2018)

Today with more than 1.5 billion Internet users around

the world (Jaffe A. & Chen A., 2010), the Internet has

become an integral part of our society. It has spawned a

revolution not only for commerce but also in communication

and interpersonal behavior. This technology changed the way

people are socializing, studying, working, shopping,

searching for jobs and spending their leisure time.

(Dinicola, 2014)

Around the world more than 80% of our youth are

spending a large amount of time on the internet. It was

introduced at a very young age into their lives, the new

generation of children and adolescents became one of the

first groups to use internet on a large scale and among the

first to begin experiencing problems associated with

excessive internet use. (Dinicola, 2014) Therefore, it

becomes essential for us to be aware of its impact on

adolescent behavior, their psychological well-being and

development. (Villamor, 2012)

Given these descriptions, internet is a collection of

millions of computers around the world that are connected

between each other. It is also a medium does not have the

limitation of information on each user and many people are

highly dependent on the Internet because it has many

advantages that can simplify a lot of work, the internet is

helpful for effectiveness and efficiency. The shape of the

effectiveness and efficiency of a given Internet and has

many services for its users so much to give ease and pamper

users. With the presence of the internet which is the

development of information and communication technologies.

(Samañego, 2011)

Sainz, (2010) said that online activity on social media

such as Facebook in Indonesia has reached 42.5 million,

which is the fourth highest in the world, about 18% of the

population of Indonesia has had the most popular social

media accounts in this world.

As a matter of fact, the number of Twitter users in

Indonesia amounted to 5.7 million, the third largest in the

world. The number of mobile phone users in Indonesia has

reached 266 million numbers, exceeding the population of

Indonesia itself Indonesian population as a whole reached

245 million people, including one of the countries with the

largest population in the world. (Sainz, 2010)

The number of Internet users reached 55 million people.

Number of Internet users in Indonesia dominate Asia amounted

to 22.4%, after Japan Technological developments are

increasingly modern and sophisticated this is not the only

benefit users but also have an impact that is not good for

users especially among students.

It is perceived very well by Sainz (2010) that the

development of Internet technology has changed the pattern

of community interaction among in business interaction,

economic, social and cultural interactions. Internet has

contributed so much to society, company, industry, education

and government, communication, publications, as well as to

obtain the information needed by everyone, especially among

students who are essentially still in the process of self,

is still full of flavor curious and unstable. With this fact

it is possible to abuse the use of the internet.

The researchers who were Senior High School Students

for two years and has been looking for the effective

learning style to enhance the knowledge and skills in

understanding subject under the K to 12 Curriculum decided

to conduct this study to determine the internet usage in

academic subjects and help them to be connected in internet

like neurons in a giant brain as what mentioned by Stephen

Hawking (2018) in his book.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the relationship of using

internet in the Grades 11 and 12 academic performance of the

students.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following

questions:

1. How the profile of the respondents may be described in

terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender; and

1.3 Time?

2. How the Internet Web browser may affect academic

performance of students be described in terms:

2.1 Academic Performance;

2.2 Gaming;

2.3 Social Networking;

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile

Internet browser as:

3.1 Academic Performance

3.2 Gaming

3.3 Social Networking

3.4 Entertainment; and

3.5 News?

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant effect between the academic

performance and internet usage of senior high school

students in Maligaya National High School.

Theoretical Framework
This study was anchored to Ghana’s (2014). It is a

study were a mass adoption of learning to leverage

technology resources Theory where he described the general

learning processes. Along with all computers, connected

devices such as Smartphone, Tablet, Switches, routers, hubs

and other connecting devices as well as the computer itself

into a single container world's computer networks.

Moreover, (Ghana, 2014) said that time spent using e-

mail and surfing online has increased significantly between

years 1996 and 2011, various types of Internet use has been

associated with positive and negative effects, symptoms of

dysphoric has been associated with several types of internet

use like shopping, playing games or doing a research,

conclusions drawn from this study is that the use of the

Internet is one of the main factors which affects academic

performance and social life of students. Social media sites

have become common and giving people new ways to interact

with each other and communicate with the world. Social

networking became popular between 2004 and 2006, after

Facebook and MySpace were created.

At this time the increasingly widespread use of the

Internet not only in developed countries but also in many

developing countries, including Indonesia, India and China.

Although the time spent on people in general to perform

online access can be very productive and compulsive.

However, the Internet use can be a bad influence on the

life, works and relationships within the family. If your

child or your child feels more comfortable with friends

online than with friends in the real world or you cannot

refrain from playing online games or unlock your smart phone

or other gadgets. It is a possible that you or your children

already using the Internet too much.

However, internet addiction is a typical use of the

internet that causes the psychological, social, educational

or occupational problems for the people. Students need the

internet more than other people due to their educational or

research needs. The rate and type of the internet use may

affect their information-seeking behavior too. This study

aims to investigate the effect of the internet addiction on

the information-seeking behavior of the post-graduate

students. Internet helps a wide range of the researchers and

the students to satisfy their information needs with no

physical presence in the libraries or other information

centers.

The theory where Ghana (2014) described the general

learning processes internet use for social networking, news,

time, poor academic performance and entertainment results

school dodging were reported uses among secondary students

that may shed light on the most effective use of internet.

The internet represented the greatest collection of

human knowledge and has enabled many communities in the

world to manage communication and solve problems faster than

education, a wide range of ideas, teaching and learning

resources, techniques and innovations have been widely

shared. This explore internet used among Tazania secondary

schools students and its effects on their learning.

Descriptive method of research was used involved in this

study. The finding report that internet use for the internet

as social media for chatting and socializing, watching

movies, news and listening to music. Waste of time, delay on

schoolwork submission, poor academic performance results and

school dodging were reported uses among secondary students.

The result of this study shed light on the most effective

use of internet. It is also important for educators and

policymakers need to devise proper way in which school

students will utilized the internet for effective learning.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature and studies

related to the present research. These related literature

and studies provided the researcher’s insights on the

importance of academic performance that makes the teaching-

learning- coaching-delegating more effective. Local, foreign

literature as well as legal basis will be consulted to guide

the researcher in the completion of this endeavor.

To give you the overview about the internet, the

researchers introduce the meaning of the Internet or

Internetworking as the largest computer network in the world

to connect all existing computer network such as Intranet,

Wide Area Network, Metropolitan Area Network, Personal Area

Network and the like. Along with all computers, connected

devices such as Smartphone, Tablet, Switches, routers, hubs

and other connecting devices as well as the computer itself

into a single container world's computer networks.

(Villamor, 2018)

Age

Ages is one of the most important characteristics in

understanding their views about the particular problems by

and large age indicates level of maturity of individuals in

that sense age becomes more important to examine the

response. (Bitstream, 2014)

Almost all 99% of 16 to 24 year olds had used the

Internet, compared with 37% of adults aged 75 years and

over. 6.4 million Adults had never used the Internet,

falling by 659,000 since 2013. (National Statistics, United

Kingdom, 2013).

More so, around the world more than 80% of our youth

are spending a large amount of time on the internet because

the internet was introduced at a very young age into their

lives, the new generation of students became one of the

first groups to use internet on a large scale and among the

first to begin experiencing problems associated with

Gender

As the matter of fact, an expert Samañego, (2012) said

that internet addiction is a typical use of the internet

that causes the psychological, social, educational or

occupational problems for the people. Students need the

internet more than other people due to their educational or

research needs. The rate and type of the internet use may

affect their information-seeking behavior too.

The study investigated the effect of the internet

addiction on the information-seeking behavior of the post-

graduate students. Based on the findings, there was no sign

of internet addiction among the 86.6% of the students and

13% of the students were exposed to the internet addiction

and only 0.4% of internet addiction was observed among the

students. There was no significant difference between the

information-seeking behavior of the male and female

respondents. There was no sign of the internet addiction in

any dimension of the information-seeking behavior of the

students. (Tuala et. al., 2018)

More so, studies conducted on the students shown that

internet addiction has been accompanied by major problems

such as the educational drop, reduced the curriculum study,

anxiety, reduced interpersonal relationships and reduced

physical activities, irregularity and nutritional diseases.

Studies carried out on the pupils and students showed that

with the increasing the internet use prevalence of the

internet addiction increases. Few studies have reported the

higher rate of internet addiction in men compared the women.

(Tuala et. al., 2018)

Time

According to Villamor (2018) time spent using e-mail

and surfing online has increased significantly between years

1996 and 2011, various types of Internet use has been

associated with positive and negative effects, symptoms of

dysphoric has been associated with several types of internet

use like shopping, playing games or doing a research.

Villamor’s (2018) conclusions also drawn from this study is

that the use of the Internet is one of the main factors

which affects academic performance and social life of

students.

Most of the people spend a lot of time on the non-

purposeful search in the internet in the process of

searching the scientific information that not only deviates

them from their main aim of searching and developing the

knowledge boundaries in the universities but also causes the

internet addiction. (Tuala et. al., 2018)

The sense of satisfaction that comes along the internet

indulgences feeds a negative cycle where more time spent

online means less real social contact and less physical

activity, increasing the vulnerability to psychological

disorders. Hence, overuse of internet can genuinely restrain

teenagers’ experiences in life, their academic performance,

social, psychological and physical well-being. (Saisan, et.

al., 2011)

The new generation of students became one of the first

groups to use internet on a large scale and among the first

to begin experiencing problems associated with excessive

internet use. (Di Nicola, 2014)

It becomes essential for us to be aware of its impact

on adolescent behavior, their psychological well-being and

development. However, The internet acts as a mechanism for

information dissemination like educational purposes, social

interaction in social network sites, emails, chats, blogs

etc. and entertainment in online games, songs, videos, films

etc. (Di Nicola, 2014)

Academic Performance

Students’ poor performance in Secondary school has

continued to pose a serious concern to government agencies,

parents and the students themselves (Essien, 2014). Most

previous studies had tended to attribute this problem to

factors that are extraneous to the learner, such as poor

19

Department of Education
Region III
MALIGAYA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
S. Y. 2018 – 2019

physical facilities, school environment etc. Various

strategies adopted by different governments and agencies

tend not to address the problem substantially. There is

therefore further need to research into other possible

factors or variables underlying students’ performance since

behavior is a product of environmental and psychosocial

variables.

However, in new Secondary Science Curriculum

implemented last 2012. Each year, students are exposed to

spiral progression approach wherein the four areas are being

taught per grading period. Aside from that, Mathematics was

changed into spiral progression. Many problems in life

involve scientific explanations and processes. For this

reason, an understanding of Science, Mathematics and

scientific approach is essential in making intelligent

decisions (Realuyo, 2016).

The internet is a relatively new channel for scholarly

resources and contains vast quantities of information that

vary a great deal regarding its contents, aim, target group,

reliability etc. Hence, it is important that the end-user is

aware of the diverse information available on the Internet

and educated in the criteria by which the information

Region III

content should be assessed (Chapman, 2012). The fabulous

growth in telecommunication has brought online services,

specialized electronic networks, Web Pages, E-mail, software

and global information resources to our homes as well as to

education.

The Internet provides an environment in which millions

of people participate and engage in the creation and

exchange of information (Rose & Fernlund, 2017).

Students have only recently received the opportunity to

use the Internet to seek and obtain scholarly material and

consequently, knowledge on how effectively they make use of

this channel is limited. Students’ information seeking

culminates as they work on their theses. Many studies have

been conducted regarding the type of information the end-

users seek and obtain on the Internet and in which

circumstances they prefer electronic sources to paper

sources (Tenopir et. al., 2013)

According to their survey, approximately 50% of all the

scholarly publications were obtained from the Internet, who

studied geography students’ use of sources on the Internet

by analyzing citations from a test, found that 51% of the

citations referred to sources on paper, 47% of the sources

were from the Internet and the rest was course material.

(Fescemeyer, 2011)

Iboronke (2012) has attributed the poor performance to

the rise in student enrolment without corresponding increase

in the material and human resources. In this study the

effect of these materials and human resources on students’

performance will be investigated.

The use of the available learning resources will

improve the academic performance of students. In other

words, one of the opportunities to stimulate this

elaboration process is by offering students more and more

diverse learning resources. Ogunleye’s (2013) review that

under laboratory conditions increasing the richness and

diversity of the learning materials has often been shown to

support students in learning, remembering and applying

information.

Internet use has become very popular in many areas as

well as in education in recent years. Accordingly, Internet

access in schools has increased greatly over the last 20

years (Berson, 2011).

Public teachers often discuss among themselves the

content of the subject they are going to teach and need to

22

Department of Education
Region III
MALIGAYA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
S. Y. 2018 – 2019

look at based on the extent of effective scientific concepts

of teaching instruction. To teach subjects successfully,

teachers are required to use approaches in teaching using

the internet in order to meet the needs of their students

and regulate their skills. (MNHS, 2016)

Corpuz (2015) explained that the teacher guides the

students as they explore and discover academic learning. She

added that teacher will never be able to help children learn

if they tell them everything they need to know. Rather, they

must be provided with opportunities to explore, inquire and

discover new learning like what the spiral approach is

intended to happen in subjects.

The role of Internet in teaching-learning cannot be

overemphasized. The issue of the poor academic performance

of students is traced to certain factors which can hinder

student understanding. Academic achievement is an important

parameter in measuring success in students. Observations and

reports have shown that success or high academic achievement

has become a “Herculean task” to accomplish by students in

recent times. The decline in the academic performance of

students in Nigerian universities had been highlighted by

Soyinka (2011), when he observed that university system in

23
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Region III
MALIGAYA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
S. Y. 2018 – 2019

Nigeria needed restructuring. He went further to say that

academic standard had fallen drastically and the quality of

graduates being produced by the nation’s universities is

questionable and subject to re-examination. Poor academic

achievement of students has been of great concern to

educationists, government and the public in general.

In addition, to help students learn effectively the

teachers need to develop their approaches in teaching and

learning the subjects as they gain effective learning

outcomes. The new approach today in the K to 12 Curriculum

enables an individual to be effective learners. It refers to

the continuity of topics from Grades 7 to 10 which involves

active participation, skills, knowledge and understanding

over the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains that

are involved in teaching-learning process.

The students according to Houtz (2010) are responsible

for their own learning. They may decide on what to do which

is the focus of the spiral progression approach, a “child-

centered approach.”

The spiral approach is a technique used in teaching

where the first basic facts of a subject are learned and

without worrying about details. Then as learning progresses,

Department of Education
Region III

Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
S. Y. 2018 – 2019

more details are introduced in relation to the basics which

are re-emphasized many times to help enter them into long-

term memory of the learners. (Hatuina, 2012)

Gaming

Compulsive online gaming has been responsible for some

horrifying deaths across the world including examples from

China and South Korea of addicts playing more than 50-

straight hours before going into extreme cardiac arrest.

Some particular concern is the youth getting addicted to

online gaming which is estimated to reach $19 billion in

revenue by 2013. (Bushman, 2012)

In addition, continue increasing in online gaming

brings a high exposure to violence and explicit content

online. Excessive Gaming or Online Gaming Addiction can be

classified as an impulse control disorder, defined as an

urge to continuously play game despite harmful negative

consequences or a desire to stop. (Bushman, 2012)

However, therapy can give a child/adolescent a

tremendous boost in controlling internet use. Cognitive-

Behavioral Therapy provides step-by-step ways to stop

compulsive internet behaviors and change ones’ perceptions

regarding internet and computer use. Therapy can also help

learn healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions,

such as stress, anxiety or even depression. (Tynes, 2014)

Social Networking

Social media sites have become common and giving people

new ways to interact with each other and communicate with

the world. Social networking became popular between 2004 and

2006, after Facebook and MySpace were created. Although the

time spent on people in general to perform online access can

be very productive and compulsive. However, the Internet use

can be a bad influence on the life works and relationships

within the family. Villamor, (2018)

The effects of social networking or social media on

school-aged children. This study examined the structural

relations between the major determinants of social

networking. The model of social networking presented

incorporates independent constructs related to children’s

attitude with regard to social networking, reasons for using

social networking, things done on social networking, and

topics used. The dependent constructs cover perceived school

performance and social effects of social networking. The

study will also explore the influence of other variables

such as student’s gender and grade level and school type.

Empirical studies showed mixed results with regard to the

impact of social networks on academic performance.

According to (Abdulahi, et. al., 2014) the studies have

found that the participation of students on social networks

may have both positive and negative impacts on their

academic performance. (Mehmood and Taswir, 2013) noted that

“the use of social media networks and the Internet is one of

the most important factors that can influence educational

performance of students positively or adversely.”

The report added that Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

are the most popular social media platforms and Snapchat is

also witnessing a massive rise in popularity, especially

with younger audiences. However, studies concerning UAE

school children’s use of social networking are rare. (Badri,

et. al., 2016) examined the usage of social media devices

and applications among students in Abu Dhabi. A survey of

more than 31,000 children from private and public schools

showed a high home access to the Internet of 91.7%. Results

showed that children used social media mainly for keeping

contact with friends and family and for learning purposes.

A report by Al Sayigh (2013) noted that “the new

communication revolution has effected a major change in the

culture and lifestyle of people, particularly of the youth.

Many of the prevailing problems afflicting the youth such as

introversion, social isolation, Internet addiction, poor

performance at schools, and the acquisition of bad habits

and values, such as violence and criminal behavior are a

direct consequence of the big change that has struck our

social culture.” The report added that “sophisticated

devices, such as iPad, pose a new challenge to Emirati

families as they remain in the hands of children and are a

matter of concern for many parents. Some complain that iPad

News

From the beginning of the human civilization,

information and the ways people use it and it has been one

of the main issues in the societies. Now-a-days, many

intellectuals consider the information as a powerful source.

Producing and disseminating the information in a wide

variety of fields has been one of the main reasons for

calling the contemporary era as the age of the information

and knowledge has become as one of the most significant

elements of human progress and civilization. (Edlagan, 2018)

Today, universities and higher education centers play a

crucial role in producing the information and students can

be effective in developing the societies through their

research activities or scientific products. They carry out a

series of activities to find the resources or information

channels in order to meet their own information needs,

including the information search, research methods, search

problems and its effective factors that totally is called

information–seeking behavior. Information-seeking behavior

is a process in which people try to change the knowledge

position purposefully and nowadays, this kind of behavior

should be considered by all human beings. Information search

may be carried out through one’s interaction with the manual

information systems (libraries) or with the computer-based

(or electronic) systems. (Edlagan, 2018)

Over the recent years, using the electronic networks

has been increased and the internet has changed into one of

the main channels of obtaining the information in the

universities and higher education centers. Internet helps a

wide range of the researchers and the students to satisfy

S. Y. 2018 – 2019

their information needs with no physical presence in the

libraries or other information centers. (Edlagan, 2018)

More so, the results of some studies demonstrated that

students utilize the non-printed resources (information

banks or web resources) more than printed resources like

books, journals, etc. in order to access their required

information. Quick and easy access to the information is one

of the main reasons that users prefer the electronic

information resources to the printed information resources.

However, internet addiction phenomenon that has become

prevalent coincidentally with the increasing the users’

daily access to the continuous resources is similar to a

real dependency such as the drug addiction although this

kind of dependency is not associated with the physical

problems of chemical addictions and its consequent social

problems are similar to other kinds of addiction. Students

use internet more than other people do in order to meet

their educational needs. For this reason, they are more

prone to the internet addiction. Based on the studies, the

excessive use of the internet causes the dangers of the

improper use of the internet, education problems and the

lack of participation in the curriculums for the students.

(Edlagan, 2018)

Continuous presence in cyberspace and using the

internet notably with no professional or quasi-professional

motivations have become common due to the wide range of the

remarkable features of the internet and this may affect the

different aspects of the users’ lives. Internet addiction

may have serious consequences such as changing the lifestyle

in order to spend more time on the internet, ignoring the

individual health and main activities, reducing the social

relationships, ignoring the family and friends, and finally,

financial, educational and physical problems. Increased

excessive use of the internet has been associated with some

problems for the users. (Edlagan, 2018)

The results shown the relationship between the internet

addiction and the field of the study. Accessing to the

information resources and scientific findings, knowledge

sharing, scientific relationships between scholars, online

learning, accessing to the virtual libraries and so on using

the internet increase the importance of the internet network

more than expected. Now-a-days, the internet is one of the

main parts of students’ daily lives for satisfying the

academic, social and recreational needs. (Tuala et. al.,

2018)

Some Studies on information-seeking behavior indicated

that the most of the students use the internet for carrying

out their research activities, finding the specialized

information and obtaining the information that is not found

in the printed resources.

The various remarkable features of the web and

electronic resources such as high rate of production, easy

access, low cost and so on compared with those of the

printed resources are among the reasons that users now

prefer the internet for satisfying their needs more than

ever before. The results showed that the average use of the

electronic resources by the students is more than the

printed resources. (Tuala et. al., 2018)

Entertainment

Many experts see the computer, combined with multimedia

capabilities as the new tool that can transform education

(Van Horn, 2011) points out that the computer can solve many

of the problems facing teachers. In today’s environment the

teacher is expected to have a large knowledge base. The

teacher also has the problem of deciding to teach at the low

end or the high end of the grade level. Many compromise and

teach in the middle. Computers can solve these two problems

by enabling teachers to customize instruction for each

student (McKeown, 2011).

Villamor (2018) remind us that your child feels more

comfortable with friends online than with friends in the

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents how the study was conducted. It

also covers the description of the respondents, the

instruments that were used, the data gathering procedures

and statistical treatment utilized in analyzing the data. It

contains the research method to be used, research local,

respondents of the study, statistical design, instrument

validation and administration of questionnaires.

Research Method

This study used the descriptive method of research in

order to determine the effects of internet in academic

performance of SHS students. According to Calderon (2008),

as cited by Alberto et. al. (2011), descriptive method is

also known as statistical research, it describes data and

characteristics about the population or phenomenon being

studied. This research method is used for frequencies,

averages and other statistical calculations. Often the best

approach prior to writing descriptive research, is

conducting a survey investigation. This method is also used

to gather information in order to test hypothesis or to

between the profile of the student-respondents and their

teaching strategies and activities. Spearman rho is used to

know if the resulting value in the significance in the

intersection of two variables is less than 0.05, it means

that the two variables have relationship to each other of

significance.

The Instrument

The main instrument used in this study was the

researchers-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was

divided into 2 parts. Part I contained data regarding the

profile of the student-respondents. Part II contained the 5-

item questions on internet websites in academic performance,

gaming, social networking, entertainment and news.

The questionnaire attempted to determine the

Performance of Grades 11 and 12 Students thru academic

performance using internet.

The questionnaire has two parts. The first part is

about demographic profile and the second part is the 5-item

questions that described regarding the use of internet in

academic performance, gaming, social networking,

entertainment and news. Each likert descriptors was based on

the researchers’ readings and understanding. To validate the

test questions, the researchers asked their statistician for

the appropriate statistical treatment that will be used in

this study. With the permission of the principal, the

questionnaire underwent a dry run procedure at the Junior

High School Students in Maligaya NHS, Maligaya Palayan City.

Administration of the Questionnaire

After the validation of the instrument, permission from

the High School Principals and Head Teachers from the

respondent schools was secured before the distribution of

the questionnaire to the respondents.

The respondents were informed about the purpose of

conducting the study, the contents of the questionnaire, and

the direction on how to accomplish the questionnaire. They

were given enough time to accomplish the instrument.

The researchers personally collected the questionnaire

from the respondents for them to check if all the items in

Chapter 4
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered which were

consequently tabulated, analyzed and interpreted to answer

the following questions in Chapter 1.

1. Profile of the student-respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age

The student-respondents’ demographic profile is

presented on the following tables.

Table 3
Age of the student-Respondents

Age Frequency Percentage (%)

Total 95 100

Table 3 shows the age of the respondents. It can be

seen in the table that thirty eight or 40.00% of the

respondents were 17 years old while thirty two or 33.68% of

the respondents were 18 years old. It is also shown that

thirteen or 13.69% of the respondents were 16 years old and

seven or 7.37% of them were 19 years old and above.

43
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education

MALIGAYA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Palayan City, Nueva Ecija

The finding implies that almost all student-respondents

were 17 years old and above. Ages of the respondents is one

of the most important characteristics in understanding their

views about the particular problems by and large age

indicates level of maturity of individuals in that sense age

becomes more important to examine the response. (Bitstream,

2014)

More so, around the world more than 80% of our youth

are spending a large amount of time on the internet because

the internet was introduced at a very young age into their

lives, the new generation of students became one of the

first groups to use internet on a large scale and among the

first to begin experiencing problems associated with

excessive internet use. (Di Nicola, 2014)

1.2 Gender

female respondents, and forty or 42.11% were male

respondents.

The finding implies that more than half of the student-

respondents were males. It only implies that there were more

female students than male in the school where the study was

conducted. This implies that the respondents’ age fall

within the expected age bracket of SHS students. (Dharel,

2016)

However, studies conducted on the students shown that

internet addiction has been accompanied by major problems

such as the educational drop, reduced the curriculum study,

anxiety, reduced interpersonal relationships and reduced

physical activities, irregularity and nutritional diseases.

Studies carried out on the pupils and students showed that

with the increasing the internet use prevalence of the

internet addiction increases. Few studies have reported the

higher rate of internet addiction in men compared the women.

Table 5 presents the time spent in internet of the

student-respondents. From the table, it can be seen that

twenty or 25.26% of the student-respondents were spent 1 to

2 hours in internet a day and sixteen or 16.84% were spent 5

hours while fifteen or 15.79% of them were spent 3 hours in

using internet.

According to Villamor (2018) time spent using e-mail

and surfing online has increased significantly between years

1996 and 2011, various types of Internet use has been

associated with positive and negative effects, symptoms of

dysphoric has been associated with several types of internet

use like shopping, playing games or doing a research.

Villamor’s (2018) conclusions drawn from this study is that

46

the use of the Internet is one of the main factors which

affects academic performance and social life of students.

Most of the people spend a lot of time on the non-

purposeful search in the internet in the process of

searching the scientific information that not only deviates

them from their main aim of searching and developing the

knowledge boundaries in the universities but also causes the

internet addiction. (Tuala et. al., 2018)

It becomes essential for us to be aware of its impact

on adolescent behavior, their psychological well-being and

development. However, The internet acts as a mechanism for

information dissemination like educational purposes, social

interaction in social network sites, emails, chats, blogs

etc. and entertainment in online games, songs, videos, films

etc. (Di Nicola, 2014)

the lowest percentage of 3.16%.

Villamor’s (2018) conclusions drawn from this study is

that the use of the Internet is one of the main factors

which affects academic performance and social life of

students.

More so, the role of Internet in teaching-learning

cannot be overemphasized. The issue of the poor academic

performance of students is traced to certain factors which

can hinder student understanding. Academic achievement is an

important parameter in measuring success in students.

Observations and reports have shown that success or high

academic achievement has become a “Herculean task” to

accomplish by students in recent times.

However, the decline in the academic performance of

students in Nigerian universities had been highlighted by

Soyinka (2011), when he observed that university system in

Nigeria needed restructuring. He went further to say that

academic standard had fallen drastically and the quality of

graduates being produced by the nation’s universities is

Increase in online gaming brings a high exposure to

violence and explicit content online. Excessive Gaming or

Online Gaming Addiction can be classified as an impulse

control disorder, defined as an urge to continuously play

game despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to

stop. (Bushman, 2012)

2006, after Facebook and MySpace were created. Although the

time spent on people in general to perform online access can

be very productive and compulsive. However, the Internet use

can be a bad influence on the life works and relationships

within the family. Villamor, (2018)

The effects of social networking or social media on

school-aged children. This study examined the structural

relations between the major determinants of social

networking. The model of social networking presented

incorporates independent constructs related to children’s

attitude with regard to social networking, reasons for using

social networking, things done on social networking, and

topics used. The dependent constructs cover perceived school

performance and social effects of social networking. The

study will also explore the influence of other variables

such as student’s gender and grade level and school type.

Empirical studies showed mixed results with regard to the

impact of social networks on academic performance.

(Abdulahi, et. al., 2014) Studies have found that the

participation of students on social networks may have both

positive and negative impacts on their academic performance.

(Mehmood and Taswir, 2013) noted that “the use of social

The report added that Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

are the most popular social media platforms and Snapchat is

also witnessing a massive rise in popularity, especially

with younger audiences. However, studies concerning UAE

school children’s use of social networking are rare.

Badri, et. al., (2016) examined the usage of social

media devices and applications among students in Abu Dhabi.

A survey of more than 31,000 children from private and

public schools showed a high home access to the Internet of

91.7%. Results showed that children used social media mainly

for keeping contact with friends and family and for learning

purposes. A report by Al Sayigh (2013) noted that “the new

communication revolution has effected a major change in the

culture and lifestyle of people, particularly of the youth.

Many of the prevailing problems afflicting the youth such as

introversion, social isolation, Internet addiction, poor

performance at schools, and the acquisition of bad habits

and values, such as violence and criminal behavior are a

direct consequence of the big change that has struck our

matter of concern for many parents. Some complain that iPad

has stolen their kids from them as these devices divert them

respondents are facebook.com, google.com, instagram.com,

twitter.com, wikipedia.com, yahoo.com and youtube.com.

(Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, 2015)

More so, internet is widely used by students in

education to seek relevant information and materials to

complete their assignments or projects. Besides that, most

libraries in the school also subscribe to online journal

databases, online books and other academic resources for

students’ usage. (Kingsley, 2013)

It can be seen on the table that the highest frequency

which is 30 fell on “Sometimes used” with a percentage of

31.58% while the lowest frequency fell on “Never used” which

got the lowest percentage of 7.37%.

The study implies that using the electronic networks or

news has been increased and the internet has changed into

one of the main channels of obtaining the information in the

universities and higher education centers. (Edlagan, 2018)

Various remarkable features of the web new and

electronic resources such as high rate of production, easy

access, low cost and so on compared with those of the

printed resources are among the reasons that users now

prefer the internet for satisfying their needs more than

ever before. The results showed that the average use of the

electronic resources and news by the students is more than

the printed resources. (Tuala et. al., 2018)

As presented in the table, although the five internet

Web Browser got the almost the same verbal interpretation of

“Occasionally used” they still differ from one another which

is proceeded by their weighted means.

The study implies that still academic performance rank

first on students use of the internet but with lecturers

using it as a supplement to classroom teaching and as an

information source, the students will utilize the internet

more for information retrieval on academic and professional

issues.

From the data gathered, most of the respondents always

used the Internet for Social Networking, Entertainment,

News, and Academic purposes. Hence, respondents indicated

that they browse the Internet for social networking and

academic purposes. The respondents also used the internet in

the internet café/shop. There were some respondents used the

(Kingsley, 2013)

The Internet can be used to advantage for knowledge

acquisition purposes by serving as an alternative to scarce

and outdated books. Instructors or Lecturers should refer

students to educational websites for more information.

The time spent using e-mail and surfing online has

increased significantly between years 1996 and 2011, various

types of Internet use has been associated with positive and

negative effects, symptoms of dysphoric has been associated

with several types of internet use like shopping, playing

games or doing a research, conclusions drawn from this study

is that the use of the Internet is one of the main factors

which affects academic performance and social life of

students. (Ghana, 2014)

social networking presented incorporates independent

constructs related to children’s attitude with regard to

social networking, reasons for using social networking,

things done on social networking, and topics used. The

dependent constructs cover perceived school performance and

social effects of social networking. The study will also

explore the influence of other variables such as student’s

gender and grade level and school type. Empirical studies

showed mixed results with regard to the impact of social

networks on academic performance. (Abdulahi, et. al., 2014)

Studies have found that the participation of students on

social networks may have both positive and negative impacts

on their academic performance. (Mehmood and Taswir, 2013)

noted that “the use of social media networks and the

Internet is one of the most important factors that can

influence educational performance of students positively or

The finding implies around the world more than 80% of

our youth are spending a large amount of time on the

internet because the internet was introduced at a very young

age into their lives, the new generation of students became

63

one of the first groups to use internet on a large scale and

among the first to begin experiencing problems associated

with excessive internet use. It becomes essential for us to

be aware of its impact on adolescent behavior, their

psychological well-being and development. However, The

internet acts as a mechanism for information dissemination

like educational purposes, social interaction in social

network sites, emails, chats, blogs etc. and entertainment

in online games, songs, videos, films etc. (Di Nicola, 2014)

The sense of satisfaction that comes along the internet

indulgences feeds a negative cycle where more time spent

online means less real social contact and less physical

activity, increasing the vulnerability to psychological

disorders. Hence, overuse of internet can genuinely restrain

teenagers’ experiences in life, their academic performance,

social, psychological and physical well-being. (Saisan, et.

al., 2011)

Compulsive online gaming has been responsible for some

horrifying deaths across the world including examples from

China and South Korea of addicts playing more than 50

straight hours before going into extreme cardiac arrest.

Some particular concern is the youth getting addicted to

64

Region III

Palayan City, Nueva Ecija

online gaming which is estimated to reach $19 billion in

revenue by 2013. Increase in online gaming brings a high

exposure to violence and explicit content online. Excessive

Gaming or Online Gaming Addiction can be classified as an

impulse control disorder, defined as an urge to continuously

play game despite harmful negative consequences or a desire

to stop. (Bushman, 2012)

However, therapy can give a child/adolescent a

tremendous boost in controlling internet use. Cognitive-

Behavioral Therapy provides step-by-step ways to stop

compulsive internet behaviors and change ones’ perceptions

regarding internet and computer use. Therapy can also help

learn healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions,

such as stress, anxiety or even depression. (Tynes, 2014)

Results showed

that children used social media mainly for keeping contact

with friends and family and for learning purposes. A report

by Al Sayigh (2013) noted that “Many of the prevailing

problems afflicting the youth such as introversion, social

isolation, Internet addiction, poor performance at schools,

and the acquisition of bad habits and values, such as

violence and criminal behavior are a direct consequence of

the big change that has struck our social culture.” The

report added that “sophisticated devices, such as iPad, pose

a new challenge to Emirati families as they remain in the

hands of children and are a matter of concern for many

parents. Some complain that iPad has stolen their kids from

them as these devices divert them from their daily studies,

completing their homework, and even from communicating with

the rest of the family.”

Chapter 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings of all

the data presented, analyzed and interpreted in Chapter IV,

the conclusions and recommendations of the researchers.

Findings

1. Profile of the Respondents

This study was conducted to the effect of using

internet in academic performance of SHS students. It used

random sampling method, descriptive correlation, percentage,

weighted mean and Spearman rho in interpreting the data

gathered.

2. Age

Thirty eight or 40.00% of the respondents were 17 years

old while thirty two or 33.68% of the respondents were 18

years old. The respondents belonged to 17 year old and

above. Ages of the respondents is one of the most important

characteristics in understanding their views and indicates

level of maturity of individuals in that sense age becomes

more important to examine the response.

3. Gender

There were fifty-five or 57.89% female respondents and

forty or 42.11% were male respondents. There were more

female students than male in the School of Maligaya Senior

High School. This implies that the respondents’ age fall

within the expected age bracket of SHS students. (Dharel,

2016)

4. Time Spent

Twenty or 25.26% of the student-respondents were spent

1 to 2 hours in internet a day and sixteen or 16.84% were

spent 5 hours while fifteen or 15.79% of them were spent 3

hours in using internet. Internet used in shopping, playing

games or doing a research. It is also one of the main

factors which affects academic performance and social life

of students. (Ghana, 2014) However, internet is widely used

by students in education to seek relevant information and

materials to complete their assignments or projects.

(Labucay, 2015)

5. Academic Performance of the Students and gaming

The highest frequency which is 43 fell on “Often used”

with a percentage of 45.26% while the lowest frequency fell

on “Never used” which got the lowest percentage of 3.16%.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following

conclusions were presented:

1. Most of the respondents were in the age of 17 years old

and above, majority are females, and spending 2 hours

and above in internet.

2. Overuse of internet has bad experiences in life,

academic performance, social, psychological and

physical well-being.

3. Students’ attitude in social networking and topics must

use in their conversation that perceived in the school

performance.

4. Compulsive online gaming has been responsible for some

horrifying deaths, getting addicted to online gaming,

increase, high exposure to violence, explicit content

online and impulse control disorder.

5. The use of social media networks and internet is one of

6. There is a need to propose different activities on

using the internet which are necessary to enhance the

performance of SHS students thru imbedded surfing the

information in internet.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions, the following recommendations

were given to the students to enhance their performance in

school:

1. Students had to do more dynamic games, must focus on

studies and should have at least less than 30 minutes

in online gaming. Explore the influence of other

variables such as student’s gender and grade level and

school type.

2. Further studies may be conducted particularly on:

a. A more collaborative learning activity to be

used in school to enhance learning under K to

12 Curriculum.

b. Use internet to enhance academic performance,

social, psychological and physical benefits.

c. The social networking must use in their

subject that improves the academic performance

in school

d. Activities must be presented using modern

technologies or ICT integration which are aids

in learning the lessons and more interesting

to the 21st learners.

e. Further studies may be conducted to help

reveal and examine the performance of SHS

students thru imbedded high-tech learning.

f. The online gaming must not be addicting to the

people that increase high exposure to

violence, explicit content and result to an

impulse control disorder.

g. Increasing the working systems and bandwidth

of the internet can facilitate the quick

access to the electronic information resources

and their use.

h. Preference for using the electronic

information resources for the libraries to

devote a part of their budget for providing

this kind of information resources.

i. Articulate discussion and researches among

subjects to increase the performance of SHS

students thru the use of internet.
