Bristol Easy Flow & Power Flow Systems

HFC227ea Fire Suppression System
UL Listed

Easy Flow System

Easy Flow System (EFS) is developed for total flooding automatic gaseous fire extinguishing system. EFS utilizes clean and
safe fire extinguishing agent heptaflouropropane (HFC-227ea) popularly known by its trade name FM-200™. Since the
enforcement of Montreal Protocol in 1989, HFC-227ea had been developed and became widely regarded as one of the
most cost-effective replacement for Halon 1301 as fire extinguishing agent.

In EFS, the agent is stored in cylindrical storage cylinder and pressurized with nitrogen to about 25 bar. This kind of
system is also commonly known as standard flow system.

Bristol Easy Flow & Power Flow Systems

HFC227ea Fire Suppression System

Power Flow System

Conventional installation of the clean agent fire extinguishing system is constrained by the size of protected area and
distance for agent delivery. This is because for such protected area, the quantity of agent becomes insufficient for fire
extinguishing when the agent and the propelling nitrogen are contained in a single cylinder and pressurized to about 25
bar. To overcome this limitation, recently Bristol Fire Engineering L.L.C. started the development of Power Flow System
(PFS) in which a separate cylinder is added to contain the propelling nitrogen. The two cylinders are interconnected by
suitable tube, hose and valves such that during discharge the high-pressure nitrogen superpressurizes and pushes the
extinguishing agent like a gas piston in order to sustain the required pressure and agent mass flow rate. PFS configuration
enables the system to discharge more than 95% of the extinguishing agent over a wider protected area requiring longer
agent flow distances within 10 seconds.

HFC-227ea Storage Cylinder

FM-200® is stored in steel cylindrical container as liquid

superpressurized with Nitrogen to 25 bar at 21°C.

Basically, both FM-200® EFS and FM-200® PFS utilize identical agent
containers. The containers have two threaded openings.

One opening is factory-fitted with an agent discharge valve while the

other opening is plugged for FM-200®

EFS or fitted with Nitrogen inlet valve for FM-200® PFS.

The Nitrogen inlet valve facilitates sufficient supply of pressurized

Nitrogen into the FM-200 container during agent discharge (of FM-
200® PFS).

The FM-200® container is also equipped with a pressure gauge and

rupture disc-fitted safety valves.

Additionally, as part of its safety feature, the FM-200® container is

equipped with safety plugs and protection caps to prevent accidental
discharge and protect the inlet/outlet valves from physical damage
when the container is not connected to the system.

A nameplate indicating FM-200® as the stored agent, pressure

rating, and nominal volume capacity, is attached to the exterior of
the container.

SOLENOID CUTTER with ADAPTER

DESCRIPTION

The solenoid cutter is used as a releasing device for the FM-

200™ (HFC-227ea) EFS and PFS. It actuates the pilot or master
cylinder when system discharge operation is initiated. In normal
system discharge operation, the solenoid cutter is activated via
electric signal from the system releasing control panel. When
energized, the spring-loaded needle assembly is released. Should
the electrical fail, the solenoid cutter is fitted with pushbutton
that can be used for manual operation of the device. The sole-
noid cutter requires to be reset manually after it has been oper-
ated.

The solenoid cutter is shipped with suitable adapter depending

on whether the device is to be used in conjunction with master
agent cylinder or actuation (pilot) cylinder valve. Ensure that this
specific information is provided upon order.

valve may be closed off.

To prevent entrapment of agent in such section of closed piping and

over-pressurization when exposed to high temperature, the pressure
relief device is fitted with a rupture disc that operates at predefined
burst pressure.

Actuation Tube Devices

A. Check Valve 6A

The Check Valve 6A is used in the pneumatic actuation tubing in a

multi-zone system to ensure that the actuation pressure is delivered
only to the intended needle cylinders (pneumatic valve actuators) on
the agent cylinder valves. In main/ reserve systems, the check valve is
used to prevent the actuation of the reserve system when the main
system is discharged.

It is also used to make sure that the needle cylinder(s) stay

pressurized throughout the duration of discharge.

B. Relief Valve 6A

The Relief Valve 6A is used for bleeding off pressure that may build-
up in the pneumatic actuation tubing if very small amount of leak in
the pilot cylinder valve occurs.

The relief valve is normally open and automatically closes when

pressure reaches 1.5 bar.

In a multi-zone system wherein check valves are installed in the

actuation line, after the system has discharged the relief valve must be
manually operated to release the pressure in the actuation tubing
prior to performing any related post-discharge maintenance.

System Actuation Kit

The actuation box is used to trigger the automatic operation

of the system by releasing pressurized actuation gas (N2 or
C02) that is then used to actuate the FM-200 needle
cylinder. It is also used to activate the agent discharge alarm
(system).

The actuation box assembly consists of a solenoid cutter, an

actuation cylinder, and a pressure switch.

The actuation box assembly is enclosed in a steel box and

factory pre-assembled.

A. Solenoid Cutter

The solenoid cutter is used to actuate the actuation cylinder.

It is an integral component of the actuation box and is activated via

electric signal that is sent by the control panel (supplied separately)
upon fire detection.

The solenoid cutter is fitted with PUSH button that is and should
only be used for emergency manual activation should the

electronics fail.

CAUTION!

Manually activating the solenoid cutter will activate the extinguishing

system. Manual activation should ONLY be performed in case of
emergency as the last course of action.

pressurized actuation gas (N2 or C02).

The released actuation gas is then used to activate the

corresponding FM-200 needle cylinder.

The actuation cylinder is factory-fitted with a discharge valve

that is opened via the activation of solenoid cutter.

As part of the cylinder safety feature, the actuation cylinder

valve is fitted with rupture disc-fitted safety plug to prevent

activate the pressure switch.

The pressure switch is then used to allow the flow of electricity via

NOTES:

• Operating temperature: 32°to 120°F (0° to 49° C). The HEC24 Series is not listed for outdoor use.

• The sound output for the temporal 3 tone is rated lower since the time the horn is off is averaged into the sound output
rating. While the horn is producing a tone in the temporal 3 mode its sound pressure is the same as the continuous mode.

• For nominal and peak current across UL regulated voltage range for filtered DC power and unfiltered (FWR [Full Wave
Rectified]) power, see installation manual. 12VDC models are DC only.

• Not recommend using a coded or pulsing signaling circuit with any of our strobe products (see Technical Bulletin 014).

*Operating the horn in this mode at this voltage will result in not meeting the minimum UL reverberant sound level
required for public mode fire protection service. These settings are acceptable only for private mode fire alarm use. Use
the high dBA setting for public mode application (not applicable when using the chime tone. The chime tone is always
private mode).

RMS current ratings are per UL average RMS method. UL max current rating is the maximum RMS current within the
listed voltage range (16-33VDC for 24VDC units) (8-17VDC for 12VDC units). For strobes the UL max current is
usually at the minimum listed voltage (16VDC for 24VDC units) (8VDC for 12VDC units). For audible the max current
is usually at the maximum listed voltage. For unfiltered FWR ratings, see installation manual.
