ABSTRACT

A shift from a Agriculture to Agribusiness is an essential pathway to revitalize

Indian agriculture and to make more attractive and profitable venture. Agripreneurship have
the potential to contribute to a range of social and economic development such as
employment generation, income generation, poverty reduction and improvements in
nutrition, health and overall food security in the national economy. Agripreneurship has
potential to generate growth, Diversifying income, widespread employment and
entrepreneurial opportunities in rural areas.

The importance of entrepreneurship development in agriculture sector and

business planning for agricultural firms – from input traders to producers to processors and
the steps required to prepare through a business plan.

Agripreneurs lack access to adequate agricultural technology inputs, finding

and commercial farming skills have put the quality under threat. The productivity may be
increasing, but better quality not been achieved. With the increase in agricultural production,
there is a need to have the proportionate growth in the agro – processing industry. In the
recent past most of the Agripreneurs are becoming real estate owners by giving their fertile
land to edifice industry, because they unable to meet the expenditure spent on cultivation,
high rate of interest taken from landlords, commission agents, banks and financial
institutions, few among them committed sucide, the rate of sucide cases was out of control.
Government from time to time taking steps to eradicate the effects in agriculture.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

There is always a common perception that youth are not interested in
agriculture because of agriculture's image problem followed by toiling labour, low economic
pay-off, employment crisis and low levels of agricultural productivity. This statement is
almost valid for all the third world countries where the majority of youth population are
engaged in non agricultural occupation than choosing agriculture as livelihood. An excellent
and profitable agricultural vocation requires a superior stand by the younger generation
possessing juvenile attire. In order to make agriculture as their vocational aspiration, the
sector should possess certain opportunities which will make them skillful enough to become
self-employed. The youth in any nation is responsible for steady economic development and
demographic evaluation.

India's economy is principally dominated by agriculture with more than

60% population dependent on agriculture. India being predominantly agricultural,
Agripreneurs play very vital and important role in the agricultural value chain. They
contribute significantly to increase the agricultural GDP by process of their value addition.
An overall growth rate of 7-8% may be contributing for the overall development of
economy, but the very major growth rate in agricultural sectors challenge for rural
development in India,

Traditionally, agriculture seen as a low-tech industry with limited

dynamics dominated by numerous small family firms. Which are mostly playing attention on
doing things better rather than doing novel things. Over the last decade, this situation has
changed dramatically due to economic liberalization, a reduced shelter of agricultural
markets, and a fast changing, more decisive, society. Agripreneurship plays various role in
the growth and development of national economy through entrepreneurship development
which increases the income level and employment opportunities in rural and urban areas.

An Agripreneur may be defined as someone who undertakes a verity of

activities in agriculture and its allied sectors to be Agripreneur. An Agripreneur may start an
agribusiness change a business direction, acquire a business or may be involved in inventory
activity of value addition. Explicit an Agripreneur is a risk taker, opportunist, initiator which
deals with the uncertain agricultural business environment.

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

Agripreneurship refers to entrepreneurship in agriculture.
Entrepreneurship is a concept that encompasses transforming an idea or vision into a “new
business or new venture creation, or the expansion of an existing business, by an individual,
a team of individuals, or an established business”. But entrepreneurship, as opposed to self-
employment, is also defined by the spirit of the entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are usually
creative, take opportunities and accept risks, and can quickly change business strategies to
adapt to changing environments. They are often innovators. While usually being innovative
and creative, farmers often lack experiences, access to services, people, or markets, and
skills to have realistic chances to succeed as entrepreneur. In addition, agripreneurs are
influenced by external, systemic factors, such as economic and social barriers, policies, and
regulations. While these constraints affect all farmers and especially all smallholders, women
and youth are particularly affected.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATUE REVIEW

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

Eric Muthomi (2017) identified that youth in Kenya have positive perception on
agribusiness venture. The positive perception is insinuated by the youth consider venturing
into agriculture as cool, and perception of agriculture as an important sector in Kenyans
economy. Youth who venture in agribusiness face various challenges. Kiambu and Thika sub
countries have adopted some strategies which are source of encouragement to youth to
involve more in agribusiness.

Sathish S Uplaonkar, Sharanagouda S Biradar (2015) analyzed that the agriculture sector
has a large potential to contribute to the national income. While at the same time providing
direct employment and income to the numerically larger and vulnerable section of the
society. Agripreneurship is not only an opportunity but also a necessity for improving the
production and profitability in agriculture sector

Gerard Mcelwee (2006) suggests that a major challenge for the agriculture sector is to
enable farmers to develop their entrepreneurial skills. It may well point to the fact that if the
sector is under as much strain as many would suggest, then farmers of all types will require
economic support and greater emphasis on education and training may be necessary.

Debashis Dash, Amardeep And Girijesh Singh Mehra (2018) emphasized that Tribal
Youth is entirely a different segment which needs an extensive study on their personal,
social, psychological and economic characteristics and also government fails to consider the
Tribal Youth as unique in characteristics and different form other youth population. To
improve the status of Tribal Youth in agriculture related activities. There needs to be
investment and encouragement in agricultural extension services targeting these young
farmers, setting up several agricultural credit schemes, encouraging food production using
modern techniques, enhancing incentives for providing need based leadership skills and
vocational training.

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

Rabeesh Kumar Verma, Alok Kumar Sahoo and Shanthanu Rakshit (2018) states that
2/3rd of the Indian population is employed in the agriculture sector, providing viable and
sustainable business opportunities in Indian agribusiness is imperative for generating
employment in the country and also Agripreneurship development will help the economy to
leverage the identified strengths and to achieve tremendous growth in primary sector and to
contribute rural development.

T. Naga Lakshmi, A Sudhakar (2013) identified that the Agripreneurs of Dharmapuri

village are using their small holding in productive way and trying to avoid intermediaries in
their activities of agriculture and they are using biodegradable and natural fertilizers to their
commercial crops, reducing usage of chemicals to avoid soil erosion. They are depending,
but not fully depending on government for financial, seed capital, marketing assistance and
they have created their own Agripreneurs associations to solve their problems.

Dr. Mahesh Chander (2016) identified that the experience of Agripreneurs can be utilized
by RAS in framing extension and rural development strategies. The RAS may consider
hiring service of these Agripreneurs as consultant so tat they feel motivated to contribute in
agricultural development process. The rural advisory service should develop strategies to
support farmers to become successful Agripreneurs, at individual, organizational and system
level.

Shoji Lal Bairwa, Kerobim Lakra, S. Kushwaha, L.K Meena and Praveen Kumar
(2014) reported that Agripreneurship is the need of hours o make Agriculture a more
attractive and profitable venture. It is clear that there is a great scope for entrepreneurship in
agriculture. The agriculture sector has a large potential to contribute to the national income.
While at the same time providing direct employment and improving the production and
profitability in agriculture and allied sector.

FINDINGS, SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSION

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

FINDINGS
 It was found that the growth of agripreneurs is not very good in spite of efforts made
by government due to lack of proper and adequate infrastructure facilities.

 It was observed that the major problems faced by the marketers are the problem of
standardization and competition from large scale units.

 It was found that agripreneurs suffer severe problem of lack of technical knowledge,
lack of training facilities and extension services.

 It was observed that inferior quality of products produced due to lack of availability
of standard tools and equipment and poor quality of raw materiel.

 It was found that most of the agripreneurs do not aware of government schemes
whether the scheme available or not.

 It was found that agribusiness will be also effected by climatic conditions like
seasonal variation, flood, lack of rain etc.

 It was found that majority of the agripreneurs utilizing subsidy/schemes from the
government and trying to improve their agribusiness.

 It was observed that most of the agripreneurs agreed that marketing of crops is
difficult due to high competition and lack of advertisement cost.

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

SUGESSIONS

● From the above study I would suggest that, training is essential for the development
of agripreneurship. It enables the rural agripreneurs to undertake the venture
successfully as it impacts required skills to run the enterprise.

● From the above study I would suggest that, do more than the customer expectations.
Quality should be maintained in the goods as well as in the service. If the customer is
satisfied with the product and service quality then the person will become a
successful agripreneur.

● From the above study I would suggest that, agripreneurs should know the basics of
accounting to manage your business easily

● From the above study I would suggest that, the financial institutions and banks which

provide finance to agripreneurs and should create special cells for providing easy
finance to agripreneurs.

● From the above study I would suggest that, Agripreneur should be more focus
towards the marketing strategy of the product. Because it is possible in an
agricultural industry that niche market is may be limited or seasonal so be aware
about when and how you are advertising your product.

DEPT OF P.G STUDIES IN COMMERCE

CONCLUSION
There is a great scope for entrepreneurship in agriculture and this potentiality can
be tapped only by effective management of agri elements and individual with risk bearing
capacity and a guest for latest knowledge in agriculture sector can prove to be a right
agripreneur. The agriculture sector has a large potential to contribute to the national income
while at the same time providing direct employment and income to the numerically larger
and vulnerable section of the society. Agripreneurship is not only an opportunity but also a
necessity for improving the production and profitability in agriculture sector.

Agripreneurship is also the answer to removal of rural poverty in India.

Therefore there should be more focus on integrated rural development program. The problem
is that most of the youth do not think of Agripreneurship as the career option. Therefore, the
youth need to be motivated to take up Agripreneurship as a career. With training and
sustaining support systems providing all necessary assistance. There should be efficient
regulated market and government should also lend its helping hand in this context.
