In this unit, you will complete tasks that will help you understand the nature of news and how it has evolved over
the course of our nation’s history. This document provides an overview of the work that you will do in this unit. On
some days, you will complete online lessons; on other days, you will conduct research and complete
assignments.
You will complete the following tasks in this unit.

Follow the instructions in the online lesson to investigate how various mediums and news values affect news
coverage choices. Then complete Reporter’s Reflection Journal graded assignment. Be sure to label your journal
entry 1.4 Visuals, so that your teacher can give you credit for this assignment.

Grading/Point Values
Journal grades are based on the quality of the content. Responses should demonstrate the following
characteristics:
• Be well written (use a spell-checker)
• Answer the prompt provided
• Show understanding of the concepts presented
Each assigned journal entry is worth up to 5 points.

Graded Discussion Assignment


You will compare and contrast news stories that you have found during your independent inquiries and discuss
your findings in this discussion as directed in the online lesson.

Grading/Point Values
Discussion grades are based on quality and timeliness. Responses should demonstrate the following
characteristics:
• Be well written (use a spell-checker)
• Clearly address the issue being discussed
• Show understanding of the concepts presented
• Timely: Initial and follow-up posts
The discussion is worth up to 20 points.
