AMOR POR DISEÑO

Incluso cuando la nota en Artes de Tom era muy buena, las demás eran terribles, su padre lo
regañaba, negándose a su sueño de querer ser un artista; por desgracia, la escuela de arte a la que
aplicó, lo había rechazado, sugiriendo que volviera a la escuela y retomara sus exámenes, su otra
alternativa era conseguir un trabajo; envió 40 solicitudes y recibió 40 negativas, pero, la biblioteca
le ofrecía un trabajo como asistente, no era difícil y le pagaban bien, pero se aburría; un día
lluvioso, una chica, Rita, entró allí, y él empezó a dibujarla, cuando ella lo notó se acercó, y
entablaron una conversación, sobre su ropa, sus sueños y sobre trabajos, no todos aburridos; por
un momento él pensó en irse con ella, pero al parar la lluvia, ella se marchó.

Al siguiente día se levantó temprano y arregló su cabello, y esperó ver a Rita de nuevo, sin
embargo, no sucedió; hizo lo mismo por dos días más sin verla, esto lo ponía triste, él estaba
enamorado de ella, y veía su dibujo cada noche; la cuarta mañana, la vio de nuevo, charlaron
sobre sus sueños, y ella comentó lo mucho que quería ser modelo, pero que las agencias en
realidad no la querían porque era bajita y según ella, no era bonita, lo que Tom replicó; entonces
el sugirió que podrían tomarle fotografías y enviarlas a las agencias, Rita accedió diciendo que era
una buena idea.

La semana siguiente fueron al parque donde Tom le tomó varias fotos a Rita, ella quiso tomarle
fotos también diciendo que él era muy guapo, con su cabello negro y ojos azules; se vieron el resto
de la semana, mientras él trabajaba ella hojeaba las revistas de modas, y él había enviado las fotos
a 10 agencias diferentes; la mañana siguiente recibieron la primera negativa, Tom sólo insistió en
que mantuviera la fe; sin embargo, la mañana siguiente 5 agencias más la habían negado, y luego
otras tres; la última revista, “Dreams”, envió su negativa, pero indicando que les gustaba la
bufanda que llevaba Rita, mostrando interés por el diseñador; ella sólo estuvo muy triste; la
mañana siguiente vieron una nuncio en un periódico de un agente que buscaba modelos; a Tom
no le dio buena impresión, pero quiso apoyar a Rita aún así.

Se encontraron con el Sr. Spooner en una cafetería, pues él dijo que su oficina estaba en
mantenimiento, usaba traje brillante, era gordo, cuarentón y a Tom le dio la clara impresión de
que era un estafador; en cambio Rita estaba embelesada con las palabras que le decía, le ofreció
convertirla en la más famosa modelo, que tendría una casa enorme, un auto y demás, para ello
necesitaba 300 libras y firmar un contrato, así como la firma de Tom también; él tomó a Rita
aparte y le mencionó sus dudas pero ella sólo quería que firmen, él, molesto aceptó, inscribiendo
la dirección de la librería en vez de la de su casa; tras la firma, el Sr. Spooner aclaró que nadie más
podía tomar fotos de ella, lo que molestó mucho a Tom, pues él era su fotógrafo; el señor se fue
diciendo que tenía cosas que hacer; Tom se despidió de Rita, diciéndole que no quiere volver a
verla.
Tom se sentía enfadado al principio, pero luego estaba triste, su amigo Danny convers+ó con él
sobre lo que pasó con Rita, y le recomendó que la llame para disculparse y arreglar la situación;
tras pensarlo mucho, Tom decidió ir a buscarla, en su barrio, que era muy pobre con gente
viviendo en edificios de bloques, y donde había pandillas de chicos malos; una de estas pandillas
empezó a perseguirlo, se subió a un elevador antes de que lo alcanzaran dirigiéndose al piso de
Rita; llamó a la puerta, y su padre respondió, él le dijo que Rita ya no vivía allí y no era más su hija;
a continuación una chica de 12 años, Shana, salió en busca de Tom, era hermana de Rita, y sólo le
pisió que la buscara, antes de que algo malo ocurriera, Tom, pensativo se alejó de allí, tan rápido
como para que la pandilla no lo alcanzara.

De nuevo habló con Danny pidiéndole consejos de cómo encontrar a Rita, y él le aconsejó recordar
los lugares que ella querría visitar, los lugares que visitaron juntos; al llegar diciembre, la biblioteca
tenía más clientes, por el calor que hacía dentro; una noche al cerrar, Tom decidió pasear por el
parque, las calles, el barrio de Rita aunque fuera peligroso, y luego, terminó en la cafetería donde
habían visto al Sr. Spooner, y allí estaban él y Rita, conversando sobre como hoy ella es pobre y
pronto tendrá una casa grande u será rica; Tom entendió que ella sólo lo utilizó para volverse
modelo, se fue de allí con lágrimas en los ojos.

Los siguientes días Tom vivió triste y molesto, mostrándose grosero con la gente de la librería,
incluyendo a su mejor amigo Danny, siempre pensaba en lo mucho que odiaba y amaba a Rita a la
vez, y de repente, ella apareció allí; sin embargo Tom sólo se mostró distante y molesto, pensando
que ella y Spooner eran novios, aunque ella tratara de explicar que no era así, que odiaba su
trabajo aunque necesitara el dinero, para pagar el cuarto en el que vivía con su amiga Natalie; Tom
no mostró interés y le dijo que se marchara, entonces ella solo dejó un presente en la mesa; al
verlo Tom vio que era un reloj y una tarjeta, pensando que Spooner lo había comprado, lo estrelló
contra la mesa e hizo trizas la tarjeta, luego vio en uno de los pedazos las palabras “Te amo”
firmadas por Rita.

Tom pasó una Navidad triste sin hablar con Danny, y sin contestar a otros amigos, pensando en
Rita y sin noticias; decidió llamar a su mejor amigo por año nuevo y encontrarse para tomar un
café, hablaron sobre Rita y lo que debería hacer; pasó enero rápidamente y febrero avecinó el día
de San Valentín, él quería enviarle una tarjeta a Rita, pero desconocía su nueva dirección; el día
llegó y él esperaba ver una carta en su buzón, y encontró una, pero era de la escuela, a la que
pensaba volver a ter minar sus exámenes; al ir al trabajo su jefe le entregó un sobre que había
llegado a la librería para él, contenía una invitación a la boda de Rita y el Sr. Spooner en abril,
además de una nota pidiéndole que la llame, él sólo estaba devastado.
Tom quería olvidarse de Rita, pasó el tiempo hasta el último día de marzo, entonces llegó la visita
de un hombre, el detective Finch buscando al Sr. Cutter; quiso hablar en privado con Tom, fueron
a una oficina y éste le dijo a Tom que había cometido un crimen, sin saberlo, Tom había ayudado al
falso Sr Spooiner a robar un banco, su nombre era Keith Dutton y era un estafador; que había
hecho firmar a Tom una carta en la que indicaba que el pagaría al banco si Spooner le debiera
dinero, con lo que éste había robado al banco; el detective le dijo que podía ayudarlos a
encontrarlo, entonces To le entregó una fotocopia de la invitación a la boda, y aclarando que
señalará a él y a Rita el día de la boda.

Pasó un mes muy frío y triste, Tom trataba de no pensar en Rita, la boda o el detective; una tarde
Shana apareció en la biblioteca, para hablar con Tom, le habló de la boda y le pidió que hable con
ella para evitarlo; le mencionó que Rita lo amaba, pero él no la creyó, aunque en el fondo quería
hacerlo; sólo pudo despedirse de Shana que se devolvió a las calles lluviosas. Esa noche Tom no
pudo dormir, pensando en la mañana del parque y lo felices que fueron él y Rita juntos.

El día de la boda era soleado y hermoso, Tom no tenía ganas ni de desayunar, pensó en escapar
pujes no quería denunciar a Rita aunque odiara a Spooner, sin embargo el detective Finch estaba
fuer a de su casa esperándolo; se puso su traje y subió al coche para ir al Registro Civil donde sería
la boda; tenían tiempo para llegar antes de las 12:45, sin emabrgo en medio de la vía ocurrió un
accidente con un camión de gallinas, había policías, bomberos y gente ayudando además de
espectadores riendo y aplaudiendo; el detective tomó a Tom y ambos corrieron a la boda, pero allí
no vieron a la pareja, pues ya estaban adentro; Tom indicó que ya era tarde, pero el detective ya
estaba corriendo dentro del lugar.

En ese momento llegaron el señor Tatchy, padre de Rita, con Shana y Bungo con quién su padre
quería que se casara; Shana entró con Tom y el detective quien indicó que los detendrían al
finalizar la boda; el juez hizo la pregunta “Alguna razón por la que esta pareja no pueda casarse” y
Tom denunció un rotundo SÍ alegando que Spooner era un criminal, a la vez, entraron su padre y
Bungo, dos policías más, Rita comenzó a llorar y Shana se acercó corriendo a ella, un ajetreo total
en el que Spooner escapó con Rita, el detective, furioso, llevaría a Tom a la comisaría.

En la comisaría Tom explicó que no quería involucrar a Rita en el caso, y no iría a prisión pues los
oficiales sabían que era us inocencia pero buscarían a Spooner y Rita para detener al criminal; el
padre de Rita mostró todo su arrepentimiento y en la siguientes semanas Tom se dedicó a estudiar
para sus exámenes y así no pensar en Rita, en Junio rindió sus pruebas y las aprobó con excelentes
notas, recibiendo felicitaciones de su profesor de arte quien le anunció que fue aceptado en la
Escuela de Arte; negaba constantemente noticias de Rita tanto de Shana como de Danny, y éste
además le invitó a la fiesta de iniciados a la universidad el viernes próximo, el día del cumpleaños
de Tom, fiesta de disfraces y máscaras.
La fiesta les pareció muy divertida, Danny disfrazado de Mickey Mouse y Tom de Charles Chaplin;
él empezó a bailar ocn una chica disfrazada de Cenicienta con una voz muy familiar; sonaron las 12
y se quitaron las máscaras, la chica era Rita quién le dijo un genial Feliz Cumpleaños, y le contó al
atónito Tom como escapó de Spooner y fue a la comisaría al día siguiente para denunciarlo,
además de como se volvió famosa, por su cuenta, ganando un concurso de diseño, que de hecho
Tom usaba un traje diseñado por ella; ella y Danny habían planeado el encuentro para el
cumpleaños de Tom, y así lograron que tenga una fantástica noche.
 LOVE BY DESIGN

Even when the grade of Arts of Tom was very good, the others were terrible, his father scolded
him, refusing to his dream of wanting to be an artist; Unfortunately, the art school which he had

in love with her, and saw her drawing every night; the fourth morning, he saw her again, talked
about her dreams, and she said how much she wanted to be a model, but that agencies really did
not want it because it was small and according to her, was not pretty, which Tom replied; then
suggested that they could take pictures and send them to the agencies, Rita agreed saying it was a
good idea.

The following week went to the park where Tom took several photos to Rita, she wanted to take
pictures also saying that he was very handsome, with his black hair and blue eyes; the rest of the
week were, as he worked she flipped through fashion magazines, and he had sent photos to 10
different agencies; The next morning received the first negative, Tom insisted that only kept the
faith; however, the next morning 5 other partners had denied, then three others; the latest
magazine, "Dreams", sent his refusal, but indicating that they liked wearing scarf Rita, showing
interest in the designer; she was just very sad; The next morning saw an anounce in a newspaper
of an agent looking for models; that did not give a good impression to Tom, but he still wanted to
support Rita.

They met with Mr. Spooner in a cafe, as he said his office was in maintenance, wearing bright suit,
he was fat, middle-aged and Tom gave the clear impression that he was a tricky person; however
Rita was enraptured with the words he was saying, he offered make it the most famous model,
which would have a huge rest house, a car, and for that he needed 300 pounds and sign a contract
and also the signature of Tom; Rita took him aside and mentioned his doubts but she just wanted
to sign, he, annoyed accepted, inscribing the direction of the library instead of his home; after the
signing, Mr. Spooner said that no one else could take pictures of her, which upset a lot to Tom, as
he was the photographer; the gentleman was saying he had things to do; Tom said goodbye to
Rita, telling him not to see her again.
Tom felt angry at first, but then he was sad, his friend Danny talked with with him about what
happened to Rita, and recommended that the call to apologize and fix the situation; after much
thought, Tom decided to go look in his neighborhood, which was very poor, with people living in
buildings with blocks, and where there were gangs of bad guys; one of these gangs started to
chase him, he climbed into an elevator before they reached the floor of Rita; he knocked on the
door, and his father said, that Rita no longer lived there and was no longer his daughter; then a girl
of 12 years, Shana, went in search of Tom, was Rita’s sister, and she asked Tom to look for Rita,
before anything bad happens, Tom thoughtfully walked away as fast as the gang not reached.

Again he spoke with Danny asking advice on how to find Rita, and he advised him to remember the
places she would visit, the places they visited together; arriving December, the library had more
customers, the weather was warm inside; closing one night, Tom decided to walk around the park,
the streets, the neighborhood of Rita ,dangerous, and then he ended up in the cafe where they
had seen Mr. Spooner, and there were him and Rita, talking about how today she is poor and soon
will have a big house and be rich; Tom understood that she only used it to become a model, went
there with tears in his eyes.

The following days Tom lived sad and upset, showing rude to people from the library, including his
best friend Danny, always thinking about how much he hated and loved Rita at once, and
suddenly, she appeared there; but Tom only showed distant and angry, thinking that she and
Spooner were dating, though she tried to explain that it was not, she hated his job but needed the
money to pay for the room in which she lived with her friend Natalie; Tom was not interested and
told her to leave, then she just left a present on the table; Tom saw that it was a watch and a card,
thinking that Spooner had bought it, he crashed it against the table and shattered the card, then
saw one of the pieces the words "I love you" signed by Rita.

Tom spent a sad Christmas without talking to Danny, and without answering other friends,
thinking of Rita and without news; he decided to call his best friend for new year and meet for a
coffee, they talked about Rita and what he should do; January passed and February got quickly
with a closer Valentine's Day, he wanted to give Rita a card, but he didn’tknow her new address;
The day came and he hoped to see a letter in his mailbox, and found one, but it was from school,
which said that he should be back to undermine his exams; at work, his boss handed him an
envelope that had come to the bookstore to him, contained an invitation to the wedding of Rita
and Mr. Spooner in April, along with a note asking her to call her, he was just devastated.

Tom wanted to forget Rita, passed the time until the last day of March, then came the visit of a
man, Detective Finch looking for Mr. Tom Cutter; wanted to speak privately with him, they went to
an office and he told Tom he had committed a crime, without knowing it, Tom had helped Mr
Spooner to rob a bank, his name was Keith Dutton and was a swindler; he had made Tom sign a
letter indicating that Tom would pay the bakn if Spooner owed them money, which he had stolen
from the bank; the detective told him he could help them find him, then handed him a photocopy
of the invitation to the wedding, and clarifying that he would point him and Rita at the wedding
day.

It was a very cold and sad month, Tom tried not to think about Rita, the wedding or the detective;
Shana appeared one afternoon in the library, to talk to Tom, she talked about the wedding and
asked him to talk to her ; he mentioned that Rita loved him, but he did not believe her, even
though deep down he wanted to; He could only say goodbye to Shana, whot went back to the
rainy streets. That night Tom could not sleep, thinking about the morning of the park and how
happy they were together, him and Rita.

The wedding day was sunny and beautiful, and Tom did not want to take breakfast, he thought he
could escape, cuz he didn’t want to denounce Rita even when he hated Spooner, however
Detective Finch was at his house waiting for him; he put on his suit and climbed into the car to go
to the Register Office where the wedding would take place;they had time to arrive before 12:45,
but at the middle of the road was an accident with a truckload of chickens, there were police,
firefighters and also people helping, laughing and cheering; Detective took Tom and both ran to
the wedding, but theydid not see the couple because they were already in; Tom said it was late,
but the detective was running inside the place.

At that time Mr. Tatchy, Rita's father, arrived, with Shana and Bungo, the man his father wanted
Rita to marry; Shana came with Tom and the detective who said the wedding would stop at the
end; the judge asked the question "Any reason why this couple cannot marry" and Tom said a
clear and resounding YES claiming that Spooner was a criminal, while, there, entered his father
and Bungo, two policemen, Rita began to cry and Shana run to her, a total rush in which Spooner
escaped with Rita, the detective, furious, would take Tom to the station.

At the police station Tom explained that didn’t want Rita to be involved in the case, and not go to
prison because officials knew he was innocence, but they would seek to Spooner and Rita to stop
the criminal; Rita's father showed all his apologies and in the following weeks Tom was dedicated
to study for their exams, so he didn’t think of Rita; in June he and Dannyielded their tests and
passed with excellent grades, receiving congratulations from his art teacher who announced him,
that he was accepted at the School of Arts; he constantly denied Rita’s news from both Shana and
Danny, who also invited him to the party of college next Friday, the same day of Tom's birthday, it
would be of costumes and masks.
The party seemed to be very funny, Danny dressed as Mickey Mouse and Tom odressed of Charles
Chaplin; he began to dance with a girl in a Cinderella costume with a very familiar voice; it was 12
o’clock and was the time to remove the masks, the girl was Rita who desired him a huge Happy
Birthday, and told the stunned Tom how she escaped from Spooner and went to the police station
the next day to denounce him; in addition, how she had become famous by her own, winning a
design competition, she was actually who deseigned Tom’s costume, so he wore a dress designed
by her; she and Danny had planned that meeting for Tom's birthday, so on that Tom could have an
amazing birthday night.
