First Class Work to be completed from Monday 20th – Friday 24th April

2020:

This is an outline of work to be completed this week; I hope it all makes sense
but if not please feel free to give me a ring at any time. This is just a guide and
there is no pressure to complete everything, I understand that it is difficult to
get through work at home. I will also be in touch during the week with a couple
of tasks via Seesaw. Please feel free to send me photos of children’s work, if
you think this might help to motivate them and keep them interested, I really
do like to hear from you, even record them reading and sending it to me by
WhatsApp.

Maths:

Mental Maths Book: do one day every day.

Cracking Maths: This week I would like the children to move onto the chapter
on Data in their Cracking Maths book. Data is all about sorting
information/objects out and putting them in order. I will send them a couple of
practical tasks on Data during the week and I would also ask that they do page
numbers p59

Tables: -12

English:

English in Practice: Do one day every day

Reading Comprehension Box: At this time of the year I usually move onto the
reading comprehension box and comprehension cards (this is new for First
Class) which works on developing reading fluency and comprehension. With each
book there is a card with questions, checking the children have understood the
book, these questions should be completed in their comprehension copies and
children should only write out the correct answer. Just do section A,B,C. I
would ask that children try to do two books this week, as written on their sheet.
I have included some further books for next week and some comprehension
cards for subsequent weeks, should the need arise.
Story: Listen to the story ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson. I am sure you all
remember this story from last year and you know that it is one of my
favourites. Now I want you to do the following tasks:

-Can you complete a story map based on this story, use the template I have sent
home.

- Now I want you to do a second story map but this time we are going to change
the characters and the setting as we begin to create a new story, so for
example I might change the butterfly to a squirrel, the baby monkey becomes a
baby rabbit and the setting becomes the woodland habitat. You can leave the
problem and the solution the same. Hang on to this story map as you will need it
next week.

Spellings: Spelling list for this week is in comprehension copy (in the middle),
please learn three spellings every day and do an activity from the
grid Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, spend Thursday learning
spellings and orally putting the words into sentences.

Handwriting: Continue to work on handwriting, try to do 2 pages this week and

even try to do joined writing when you are doing your written work.

Gaeilge:

Abair Liom: Ag péinteáil page 118

If children want to access this chapter online they can do that by visiting
www.folensonline.ie and use my log in details to log in, username
emerstone19@gmail.com and the password is harvest1. Children can then listen
to the story and comhrá, play games, listen to songs, etc. They are used to doing
this in school so there shouldn’t be any difficulties with is. Then I would ask
them to read page 121 and do page 120 in Irish copy, filling the gaps with words
at top of the page. On page 122, I ask them to look at the pictures and then
write the question and answer into their copy using the phrases at the top of
the page to complete the answers.
S.E.S.E.: Geography:

This week we are looking at the environment around us, I want you to…

-observe and appreciate the attributes of the local environment (plants, animals,
habitats, natural and human features)

-appreciate that people share the environment with plant and animal life

-develop a sense of responsibility for taking care of and improving the

environment.

I want you to take your S.E.S.E. copy outside and draw a picture of 6 things in
your environment, try to include something from plants, animals and human
environment (that could be something that was built or something that was
made e.g. your house, bicycle, and trampoline)

Now I want you to complete the hunt to see what you can find in your
environment, you will find it stuck into your SESE copy tick off each object as
you find it, think about if these items are from the natural/human environment
and if you want you can ask your parent to send me a photo of your finished
sheet.

Science: Forces

Push or Pull toy worksheet: Look at the toys do they need to push/pull/both to
make them move, maybe you could try it out on some of your toys at home.
