OUTCOMES TO BE ASSESSED:
Skills Outcomes:
CH12-2 designs and evaluates investigations in order to obtain primary and secondary data and information
CH12-3 conducts investigations to collect valid and reliable primary and secondary data and information
CH12-4 selects and processes appropriate qualitative and quantitative data and information using a range of
appropriate media
CH12-5 analyses and evaluates primary and secondary data and information
CH12-6 solves scientific problems using primary and secondary data, critical thinking skills and scientific
processes
CH12-7 communicates scientific understanding using suitable language and terminology for a specific
audience or purpose

Contextual outcomes
Module 5
• explore the use of Keq for different types of chemical reactions, including but not limited to:
− dissociation of ionic solutions
− dissociation of acids and bases
● conduct an investigation to determine solubility rules, and predict and analyse the composition of
substances when two ionic solutions are mixed, for example:
– potassium chloride and silver nitrate
– potassium iodide and lead nitrate
– sodium sulfate and barium nitrate
● derive equilibrium expressions for saturated solutions in terms of Ksp and calculate the solubility of an
ionic substance from its Ksp value
● predict the formation of a precipitate given the standard reference values for Ksp
Module 6
• conduct an investigation to demonstrate the preparation and use of indicators as illustrators of the
characteristics and properties of acids and bases and their reversible reactions
• calculate and apply the dissociation constant (Ka) and pKa (pKa = -log10 (Ka)) to determine the
difference between strong and weak acids
DESCRIPTION OF TASK:
You may be examined on your ability to
• Conduct practical activities
• Write up procedures
• Present gathered information in an appropriate format
• Distinguish between strong and weak acids
1
• Use an ICE tables
• Calculate molar concentrations
• Determine Equilibrium constants
• Write balanced chemical equations
• Use solubility rules and constants
NB: Students will attend all timetabled lessons or scheduled school activities on the school day prior to an
assessment task. Where a task is due later in the day, then students must attend all lessons prior to the
task on that day
If the student is absent for a valid reason consult the assessment handbook for all information relating
to illness and misadventure.
If proof of illness or leave is not approved, then the student’s assessment mark for that task may be
reduced.
