Airport Design

Aerodrome .
An aerodrome is any defined area on land or water intended to be used either
wholly or in part for arrival, departure and movement of an airport. .
.
Airfield .
The part of aerodrome used extensively for landing and take-off activity is
called air-field.
.
.
Capacity .
The capacity of an airport is defined as the number of movement. An airport
can handle safely within the certain sepific period. The capacity of an airport
depends on a number of factors:
.
i. Maximum acceptable delay for a departing aircraft..
ii. Number of exits (taxiways) available. .
.
Apron
.
The portion of airport generally pared, in front of the terminal building or
adjacent of hangers meant for parking, loading and unloading of the aircraft is
known as apron..
The holding aprons are provided at a busy airport at or near the ends of
runways. These serves to hold the planes immediately before taking off so as to
wait there until the runway is clear of the other planes using it. .
With a view to relieving congestion on major airports, sometimes aprons may be
provided exclusively for fueling. .
.
Taxiway .
It is a define path as/on a land aerodrome selected or prepared for the use of
taxiway aircraft to and from land the runway..
.
Design Criteria of Taxiway.
The design criteria of a taxiway are as follows:
.
1> Taxiway should be clearly identified so that they are not confused within
runway
2> Exit for runway should be clearly identified.
3> There should be adequate guidance(i.e. lighting, marking) along taxiway
.
4> The specific taxiway should be readily identified to pilot .
5> Intersection of taxiway and runway crossing should be clearly marked.
6> The complete route from runway to apron should be easily and clearly
identified.
