Lecture Outline

• Water Demand
• Water Source Evaluation
• Objectives of Water Treatment
• Water Quality
• Evaluation of Process Options
• Plant Sizing and Layout
• Plant Location
Water Demand
• Before we begin to design water supply
facilities, we need to determine the design
capacity, which is a function of water demand.
• The determination of water demand consists of
4 parts
1. Selection of design period
2. Estimation of population, commercial and
industrial growth
3. Estimation of unit water use
4. Estimation of variability of the demand
Design period (life)  life expectancy
The design period is the length of time it is estimated
that the facility will be able to meet the demand, that
is, the design capacity.

The life expectancy of a facility or piece of equipment

is determined by wear and tear.

Typical life expectancies:

-For equipment range from 10 to 20 years.
-For buildings, other structures, and pipelines are
assumed to have a useful life of 50 years or more.
New water works are generally made large
enough to meet the demand for the future.

The number of years selected for the design

period is based on the following:
• Regulatory constraints.
• The rate of population growth.
• The interest rate for bonds.
• The useful life of the structures and equipment.
• The ease or difficulty of expansion.
• Performance in early years of life under minimum
hydraulic load.
Unit water use
Community’s historic records provide the best estimate of water use.

Conversion of total demand to per capita demand (liters per capita

per day, Lpcd) allows for the separation of population growth from the
growth in unit consumption.

If the proposed project is to improve the water quality, consideration

should be given to that unit demand will increase because of the
improved water quality.

In the absence of existing data for the client community, nearby
communities with similar demographics are a good alternative source.

Adjustments to the unit water use should be made to account for

commercial and industrial facilities (Tables 2-2,2-3,2-4)

The use of one or more flow-reduction devices may have a

substantial impact on per capita consumption
Factor affecting Unit Water Use:

1. Climate
2. Industrial activity
3. Meterage
4. System
management
5. Standard of living
Variability of Demand
The unit demand estimates are averages.

Water consumption changes with the seasons,

the days of the week, and the hours of the
day.

Fluctuations are greater in small than in large

communities, and during short rather than
long periods of time
Water Demand
• Variability of Demand

– Design basis for water treatment facilities is max

daily flow at the design year.
– Flow for fire protection is satisfied by providing
storage.
Sources of Drinking Water
• Groundwater
– shallow wells
– deep wells
• Surface water
– rivers
– lakes
– reservoirs
Water Source Evaluation
• The first considerations in selecting a water supply source
is the ability of the source to provide an adequate quantity
of water.

• A measure of quantity here is named yield.

Yield is the average flow available over a long period of time.

Safe Yield is the amount of water that can be abstracted from

source without damaging the source properties and can be
recharged
Water Source Evaluation
• Surface vs. groundwater; what
to choose?

– Consider fluctuations in quality

and quality
– Consider natural storage
– Consider protection
Ground- vs. Surface Water

Groundwater Surface water

• constant composition • variable composition
• high mineral content • low mineral content
• low turbidity • high turbidity
• low color • colored
• low or no D.O. • D.O. present
• CO2, H2S may be • low hardness
present • taste and odor
• high hardness • Clay, silt, NOM (natural
• high Fe, Mn organic matter)
Objectives of water treatment
• Produce water
– That is palatable (good tasting)
• esthetically pleasing
• presence of chemicals does not pose a threat to
human health
• Does not include chloride, color, corrosivity, iron,
manganese, taste and odor
– That is potable (safe to drink)
• protective of human health
• Not necessarily esthetically pleasing
– That meets regulatory criteria/standards
– Without interruption
– At reasonable cost.

Plant sizing and layout
• Once preliminary selection of water treatment
unit operations and processes is made
– Rough calculations to determine sizes of units to
examine feasibility within site location and costs
– Consider
• Number and size of process units
• Number and size of ancillary structures
• Layout should include
– Provision for expansion
– Connection to transportation net
– Connection to water distribution system
– Residuals handling system
Plant sizing and layout
• Number and size of process units
– A minimum of two units is provided for redundancy
– If only two, must be able to meet demand with one
in operation
– Need to consider efficiency at low flow (start-up
years)
• Number and size of ancillary units
– Administration building and laboratory
– Storage tanks
– Mechanical building for pumping
– Roads and parking
– Space for residual treatment and storage
Site location

• Should allow for expansion

• Weigh location relative to transportation
net, raw water supply, and service area
• Physical characteristics: potential for
flooding, foundation stability, groundwater
intrusion, depth to groundwater or
bedrock, wetlands, proximity to potentially
hazardous sites or situations
Outcomes
Based on this lecture and Chapter 2, you
should be able to
– Explain the influence of environmental regulations on
the design of treatment facilities and related decision
making
– List and describe the factors that influence water
demand
– Compare surface and groundwater as source water
for drinking water
– Draw schematic diagrams of typical water and
wastewater treatment facilities, identifying the unit
processes and marking the flows of water, chemicals,
and residuals
