SAINT LOUIS ZOO

ZOOTRITION™ Version 2.6 USER’S

GUIDE

The mission of the Saint Louis Zoo is to conserve animals and their habitats through
outstanding educational and recreational experiences, research and animal management.
Core Values encompass: Stewardship, Tradition, Customer Focus, Leadership,
Knowledge, Integrity, Teamwork, Diversity, and Accountability. The Saint Louis
Zoo is supported by three boards: the governing Commission, the Zoo Friends and the
Foundation. The Commission has the fiduciary responsibility for the health and well-
being of the Zoo as an institution. The Zoo Friends Board is responsible for generating
contributed income through their 38,000 member families and through the 11,000 Zoo
Parents. The larger Board of Directors (the Foundation) of 65 is responsible for major
gifts. While it may seem confusing to have three separate boards involved, the Zoo is a
partnership -- a public-private partnership. The Zoo belongs to the public, the taxpayers.
It will always remain free and accessible to all because of this partnership and its broad
financial base.

It is with this spirit and underlying values that the Zootrition software also finds a
homebase at the Saint Louis Zoo.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS to Version 2.6
The support of Dr. Jeffrey Bonner, CEO and President, Saint Louis Zoo, and Peter
Dollinger, Director, World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, in securing the future of
Zootrition development is much appreciated. We also acknowledge the international
zoo, university, and wildlife communities in recognizing the need for this software, and
their continued interest, feedback, and promotion of its use for improving diets and
nutrition of the species under our care and commitment. Our International Advisory
Board provided excellent data and upgrade suggestions, Disney’s Animal Kingdom (in
particular) and the Saint Louis Zoo staff were essential in providing initial Body
Condition Score inputs, and Lisa Seidel and April Braddy assisted with data entry. Jerry
French provided technical support throughout the process. We thank SSE Inc., for
accepting the challenge of picking up a project mid-stream, and particularly the expertise
of Ellen Bohn and Theresa Smallwood, for their technical contributions in converting
Zootrition to a Saint Louis Zoo-based program.

In addition to Acknowledgment Comments from Version 2.0:

The success of Zootrition comes from the continuous input from the hundreds of users
across the globe. Useful comments from academicians, clinicians, Version 1 users
throughout the world, and over 200 Zootrition training workshop participants in three
continents contributed to the design and function of Version 2. We thank everyone who
has offered and provided feedback to our efforts. We are especially grateful for the
designation of Zootrition as a national standard by the Dutch Federation of Zoos, by
ACOPAZOA (the Colombian Zoo Association) through the efforts of the Zoo
Conservation Outreach Group, and by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(EAZA).

2
We are grateful for the insightful feedback, comments and patience from Kristina
Johansen, Neil Jessop, Marcus Clauss, Kirstie Fraser, Camilo Tapas, Rosamira Guillen,
Antonio Guilherme Vidigal, Mauvis Gore, Alan Abend, Joeke Nijboer and Jennifer
Cook. These and other comments were painstakingly collected and integrated by Andrea
Fidgett into a cohesive Version 2.0 requirements document. The Version 2.0 Project
Manager, John DiLorenzo further developed this document into a Technical
Specification, with kind assistance from the WCS Working Group comprising Animal
Management, Information Technology, Nutrition and Veterinary personnel. Finally, we
are immensely thankful for those individuals who worked so hard and displayed such
patience as beta testers; their comments and efforts have helped improve our product.

We sincerely appreciate the support of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s
Conservation Endowment Fund for the generous grant to support the upgrade of the
original software, and particularly for extensions of completion timelines as we attempted
to integrate new technologies and information. Many thanks to the development team
from Sybits, Inc., especially Sanjay Gulati, Neil Jessop (Energetics Module), and WCS
Exhibits and Graphics staff (John Fraser and George Dremeaux) each of whose skills,
time and patience made this upgrade a reality. Original data acquisition, review, entry
and validation were due to the collective efforts of Georg Weyand, Nancy Deenihan-
Gruber, Yekaterina Gluzberg, Tamara Ross, Marian Glick-Bauer, David Hellinga,
Wendy Graffam, Debra McDonald, Jasmine Irani, Ellen Dierenfeld, and John DiLorenzo.
We hope that global users of this software will continue to contribute to its development
by providing feedback on its usefulness and helping to provide direction for further
versions.

ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 DATABASES

The ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software comes with a global database of feeds and
recommendations needed to begin work immediately. As you create and enter local data,
it will become part of your ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 database.

Hint: The publications, from which data were obtained, can be found in Appendix I.

Note: The inclusion of any feeds or brand names in the global database does not imply a
product endorsement.

4
GLOBAL DATABASE

The ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software package includes a wealth of data, referred
to as the global database. The global database consists of feed composition, nutritional
recommendations, and taxonomy information.

Hint: You may not edit global data. A lock icon will appear when you have selected a
global item, signifying that the item may not be edited.

The global database includes:

• Global feed categories

• Global feeds

• Nutrient composition of global feeds

• Taxonomic tables with Latin and common names

• Published nutritional recommendations (i.e. Recommendations)

GLOBAL DATABASE UPDATES

On an as needed basis, the Zootrition™ Project team will issue global database
updates to the current version via the web or CD-ROM. These updates will include
additional or clarifying information to the master file. This information, always shipped
on an inclusive basis with prevoi9ous updates, should be applied to any user databases
using the ‘Apply Global Updates’ option under the Administrator drop down menu.

Hint: To recommend a feed, requirement or nutrient for inclusion in the

ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 global database, please use the suggestion forms found
in Appendix II.

5
LOCAL DATABASE

The data that you will add is referred to as local data. ZOOTRITION™
VERSION 2.6 software allows you to create your own feed categories, feeds,
diets, animal information and other database information. You may also wish to
create local recommendations and feeds by copying and modifying the global
information provided. Thus, the ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 program allows
you to incorporate institution-specific information. Your local database will grow
as you use ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software.

Hint: To create local recommendations and feeds from global data, select the copy to
option from the edit drop down menu. Refer to Chapters 4 and 5 for more information
on how to use the copy to function.

The following information is NOT included in the global database. You should enter the
following local data into the ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 database:

• Location data – Information on the facilities, buildings and enclosures at your

institution (e.g. monkey house, cage #1). (Refer to Chapter 10)

• Specific animal data – Information on the individuals or groups of animals in the

enclosures at your institution (e.g. male baboon(s) in monkey house, cage #1).
(Refer to Chapter 10)

• Vendors – The persons and/or organizations from which your feeds are
purchased. (Refer to Chapter 10)

• Feed costs - Prices of individual feeds at your institution, with local currency
unit, are added manually into the Feeds database using the Feeds function.
(Refer to Chapter 5)

Hint: Prices may be added to global feeds, but this is the only modification that
can be made to global feeds. (Refer to Chapter 5).

• Local feeds - Feeds that are used at your institution and not included in the
ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 database. You may create a local feed by
copying a feed from the global database and modifying it to be more similar to
a feed specifically available to your institution. (Refer to Chapter 5).

• Diets - The combination of feeds that represent the items offered to/consumed
by the animals at your institution. (Refer to Chapter 4).

6
• Recommendations - Local recommendations and requirement categories may be
added, or created by copying and modifying global recommendations. (Refer
to Chapter 8).

Hint: The local data exists in a relational database where certain rules apply to data
entry. For example, you may not delete a FEED CATEGORY if there are FEEDS still in
that category, DIETS using those FEEDS or if that feed is on an ORDER in the
FEEDING GROUP FUNCTIONS screen.

7
ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 SOFTWARE FUNCTIONS
The ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software provides the following functions by
offering various screens and reports for the user. These are:

DATABASE MAINTENANCE

You may add, delete, modify, view and print information entered into the
ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 database. The user may enter local data, or
global data may be copied as a template for local data modification. (Refer to
Chapters 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 ).

Hint: The global database can be viewed but not edited. Global database items, indicated
by a lock icon in the data windows, cannot be modified.

DIET MAINTENANCE AND ANALYSIS

ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software allows you to create and modify diets,
analyze their nutritional composition, and compare diets to published
Recommendations. You may select from global or local feeds to create your diets.
Search functions allow you to find a specific diet in the database. (Refer to
Chapter 4).

FEED MAINTENANCE AND ANALYSIS

You may add, delete, modify, view and print the nutritional composition of local
feeds. You can compare selected feeds against other feeds and against various
Recommendations. You may also add, delete, modify and print local feed
categories and feeds. Global feeds may be copied as a starting point for your local
feeds. Data may be viewed in a variety of units. Search functions allow you to
find specific feeds in the database. (Refer to Chapter 5).

ENERGETICS
The ENERGETICS module is a major new feature to ZOOTRITION™
VERSION 2.6. This program provides recommended energy needs for animals
based on Animal Type and Class. Energy recommendations are dynamically
calculated based on animal weight, activity level and physiological state.

8
Energy values, both BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and FMR (Field Metabolic
Rate), provide a value range for review by the diet administrator. Each BMR and
FMR value is accompanied by a published reference and comment on the
reference for a more complete picture on the values.

RECOMMENDATION MAINTENANCE AND ANALYSIS

ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software will help you to compare diets or feeds
to published recommended nutrients. You may also add, delete and modify local
Recommendations. Global Recommendations may be copied as a starting point
for your local Recommendations. Search functions allow you to find a specific
requirement in the database. The global database was designed to provide a
majority of the published nutrient Recommendations for various species
(primarily livestock and domestic). (Refer to Chapter 5).

FEEDING GROUP MAINTENANCE AND FEED ORDERS

ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 software allows you to create feeding groups of

animals. For example, all of the animals in a building, or in a mixed species
exhibit may be assembled into a feeding group. The individual diets and diet
components needed for a feeding group can be compiled for delivery and ordering
functions. (Refer to Chapter 9).

FORMS / APPENDIX
A major new feature to ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 was the inclusion of
.PDF forms and appendices offering published data relating to diet analysis and
creation, as well as reference information. This reference section is expanded in
VERSION 2.6.

Chapter 66
ENERGETICS
The ENERGETICS screen appears when you click on the Energetics button on the
ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 DIET FUNCTIONS window

The ENERGETICS module provides recommended energy needs for animals based on
Animal Type and Class. Energy recommendations are dynamically calculated based on
animal weight, activity level and physiological state.

Energy values, both BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and FMR (Field Metabolic Rate),
provide a value range for review by the diet administrator. Each BMR and FMR value is
accompanied by a published reference and comment on the reference for a more
complete picture on the values.

50
CREATING AN ENERGY VALUE

1. In the upper left hand corner of the screen, Animal Setup requires three inputs for
calculation: Animal, Class, and Weight.

2. First select ANIMAL from the drop down menu. Options are: Mammalia-Eutheria,
Mammalia-Metatheria, Mammalia-Prototheria, Aves-Neornithes, Food Habits,
and Reptilia-Lepidosauria.

3. For each of the animal selection, directly below is a drop down to select the class of
each animal.

4. If the animal selection is Food Habit, the drop down menu below provides over 15 of
the more appropriate definitions for food habit (e.g. Nectarivores, Small
Folivores).

5. Finally, a WEIGHT, in Kilograms, for the animal must be specified.

6. This is an important issue – the weight must be converted manually from grams. As an
example, a bird which would normally weight 10g would be input here as 0.01
kilograms.

7. To the right of the animal setup area is Activity level. The user is asked to select one
of three activity levels, which are: Low (<25% of the day Active), Medium
(>25% but <50% of the day Active) and High (>50% of the day Active).

8. Below Activity Level are two radio buttons that allow selection of energy values in
either kCals or kJoules.

9. Finally, to the right of Activity is Physiological State. One of six states must be
selected. Options are: Juvenile, Sub-Adult, Mature, Pregnant (Late), and
Lactating. These options are used to calculate FMR.

10. Once all selections have been made, the Recommended Energy Values for BMR,
FMR along with corresponding research citations and comments are displayed in
the lower portion of the screen.

11. Once the Energetics module has been activated, it remains active for the entire
ZOOTRITION™ VERSION 2.6 session. It may be minimized and available at
all times as a program button on the lower program bar that runs across the
program icon bar at the bottom of your Windows screen.

Version 2.6.

Apply Global Updates

Updates to the global database and information on the ZOOTRITION™

VERSION 2.6 software can be found at the web site (www.zootrition.org) as they
become available. Local database information will not be affected by updates.

It is anticipated that regular updates to the global database will be published to the
Zootrition community. These database updates will include any and all changes
to those tables and fields that included Zootrition data.

95
Version 1 Installation Update

All Version 1.0 users will be required to run a Global Update against their
imported data. The Administrator should run the function ‘Apply Global
Updates’ from the Administration Menu.

Apply Global Updates

Global Updates are time–consuming. They range in effort from 20-45 minutes per
database depending on the volume of pre-existent user data exists.

It is highly recommended that the Administrator:

a. A. All Global Updates must be applied to every user database using

Zootrition.

b. All Global Updates should be stored in a separate sub-directory from

the installation of Zootrition Version 2.6.

c. Backup all Version 2.6 data prior to any import process

d. Create an update list of all databases to be converted.
